The Good News LYONSVILLE CONGREGATIONAL UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST "A Home for The Spiritual Journey" Rev. Sean Weston, Pastor Gary Boxell, Editor Inside this issue: 175th Anniversary 2 Birthdays and Anniversaries Remember in Your Prayers Mark Your Calendars Easter Flower Order Form 3 3 4, 5 5 General News 6, 7 Thank You Notes 7 Join Us 7 Mission Board News Worship Opportunities 8, 9 9 March 2018 PASTOR S CORNER I recently had some friends over for dinner, and I found myself spending a lot of time getting ready. I swept, mopped, vacuumed, straightened up the furniture, planned an involved meal, filled the salt and pepper shakers, and made sure I had more. I had a full selection of snacks and drinks. On one hand, I dreaded all that work. Keeping a household going day-to-day is enough work without all that extra work! But on the other hand, there was something deeply satisfying about anticipating company. It was exciting, and I went the extra mile to prepare for them as an expression of love and hospitality. I imagine many of you have similar experiences. In many ways, Lent is about getting ready for company. It s about clearing out all those places inside of us that we usually ignore or avoid, to make a bit more room for God s presence and the presence of our neighbors. It s about letting go of some things so that we can be more filled with God s love. Lyonsville Church is in the process of getting ready for company, too. The Leadership Council and I have set some ambitious goals for 2018: a constitution & bylaw revision, personnel, financial, and safe church policies and procedures, and clarifying staff and volunteer roles. I ll work with the Evangelism Committee to develop a plan for welcoming and following up with visitors. The 175 th anniversary committee will be asking us what the church has meant to us, and what our hopes are for the future. If this work takes place successfully, we ll pivot in 2019 to a focus on connecting with our community and sharing our message. If you were in worship on February 18, you heard me say that none of this is about making more paper to ignore. It s about operating effectively and faithfully as a congregation. It s about how our relationships look, how decisions are made, how we treat each other. It s being clear about who we are, what matters to us, and what we have to offer our community. I can t just go out and make growth happen not if it will last. Together, we need to get ready for company. (Continued on pg. 2)

Page 2 The Good News It s hard to get ready for company among all the day-to-day stuff of running a church, just like it s hard in our own homes. I hope we can also remember that it s exciting. After all, the best way to express love and hospitality to those outside the church is to be ready to host them. I, for one, am excited to see what this year brings. Grace & Peace, Pastor Sean "I LOVE TO TELL THE STORY" Celebration of Our 175th Anniversary Sunday, May 20, 2018 SAVE THE DATE!!! Our anniversary celebration is coming up soon! Although this committee is currently firming up specific plans and activities, we know it will be a day of both remembering the past and looking forward to the future. In general, following a morning service of celebration, with invited guests from our past, we are planning a brunch and concert. Historical pictures and other remembrances will be on display. We are also working with the cemetery board to include that part of the church's past as well. We are planning to publish a memory book that includes pictures from Lyonsville's past as well as remembrances from our members and friends, past and present. So here is where we need your help. If you have a memory of Lyonsville and its people that "tells the story" of what our church has meant to you, or you want to look forward to share your hopes for our future, please write it up and submit it to Nayna Byers. It does not need to be long or perfectly written, it just needs to "tell the story". So we have time to get the book published prior to our big day, please submit your stories to Nayna by 4/1/18. You can email, submit handwritten, or mail to 604 Barnsdale Rd., La Grange Park, IL 60526. We have read some of the written remembrances from anniversary celebrations of the past and they are rich with the love of Lyonsville and its people!! Please take a little time and share. If you would like to participate with the committee to help plan the day, please contact Nayna. As plans firm up, we will provide details of this celebration day. For now, SAVE THE DATE 5/20/18, and think about how you can "TELL THE STORY"! Shalom, Your 175th Anniversary Committee Doug Adams, Wilma Mrazek, Barb Loehman, Patrick Ferguson, Pastor Sean Weston, Hazel Sharp, Nayna Byers

The Good News Page 7 Lyonsville is pleased to announce that we have hired a professional business manager to perform our day-to-day and week-to-week financial transaction entries and to maintain our books. This will take a great load off of our volunteers and help to ensure our financial records are up-to-date and accurate. Please help us in welcoming Steve Swenson as the newest member of our staff. Steve will report to Pastor Sean, and work closely with our Treasurer, Phil McDougal, and our Financial board, as well as all of Leadership Council. Doug Adams - Moderator Thank you to all who donated white products (toilet paper and paper towels) to the Lyonsville food pantry. This is an ongoing need and donations are welcome throughout the year. Thank you to our volunteers: Bruce Cady, Marianne Johnson, Doug Adams, Judy Birmingham, Ali Benis and Ashley Boyer for helping out on Saturday, February 17th at the Greater Chicago Food Depository. They helped bag, box, label, and palletize 437 boxes (17,312 pounds) of sweet potatoes for distribution. Page 8 The Good News News From Your Mission Board HEIFER INTERNATIONAL - Beginning March 4th, we will collect donations for Heifer International by distributing plastic Easter eggs to our members and friends. We ask that you bring the eggs back on Easter Sunday filled with coins and/or dollar bills. For as little as $20 we can buy a flock of ducks, chicks or geese; for $120 we can buy a goat, a sheep or a pig. Giving an animal is like giving someone a small business, providing wool, milk, eggs and more. Animal donations can provide families a hand up, increasing access to medicine, school, food and a sustainable livelihood. Please help us make a difference. Easter Food Baskets: The Mission Ministry will be putting together Easter Food Baskets, which will be given out at our Lyonsville Food Pantry. If you would like to donate towards a ham dinner, we will be collecting canned fruit, canned vegetables, boxed potatoes and money (for the purchase of the hams). We would like to provide 20 dinners, if possible. Thank you. GREATER CHICAGO FOOD DEPOSITORY VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY Please come join us to help volunteer at the Greater Chicago Food Depository (GCFD) on Saturday, March 17, from 8:30 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. We also go every Wednesday from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. For more information go to www.chicagosfoodbank.org or see/call Cindi Fiandaca or Judy Birmingham to sign up.
