First Presbyterian Church 101 S. Center St., Marshalltown, Iowa 50158 Phone 641-753-5929 E-mail presmtwn@mchsi.com www.nivlac.org 9:00 a.m. Aug. 3, 2014 "One generation shall praise Your works to another" (Psalm 145:4, NKJV). We come together--young, old and in between--to praise the Lord and celebrate His works. Welcome! Large print bulletins are available and children s bulletins are available on the table in the Narthex. A nursery is available for infants up to 5 years of age.

Those who are able are invited to stand. PRELUDE Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah John Hughes LIFE OF THE CONGREGATION Moment of silence to prepare your hearts for worship SONG OF DEVOTION (hymnal & screen, remain seated) #217 Holy Ground (vs. 1) LET US WORSHIP GOD TOGETHER CALL TO WORSHIP (Psalm 84:1-2, 4, 10-12) Leader: How lovely is Your dwelling place, Lord Almighty! People: My soul yearns, even faints, for the courts of the Lord; my heart and my flesh cry out for the living God. Leader: Blessed are those who dwell in Your house; they are ever praising You. People: Better is one day in Your courts than a thousand elsewhere; I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of the wicked. Leader: For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord bestows favor and honor; no good thing does He withhold from those whose walk is blameless. People: Lord Almighty, blessed is the one who trusts in You. INVOCATION Leader: Almighty God, bless us with Your presence and help us abide in You always. Bind the evil one from our lives and give us the discernment to reject his lies. Let Your truth rest in our hearts and let praise rise from our lips. In Jesus name we pray. Amen SONG OF PRAISE (hymnal & screen) #21 O for a Thousand Tongues to Sing CALL TO CONFESSION (Isaiah 33:13-16) Leader: You who are far away, hear what I have done; you who are near, acknowledge My power! The sinners in Zion are terrified; trembling grips the godless: Who of us can dwell with the consuming fire? Who of us can dwell with everlasting burning? Those who walk righteously and speak what is right, who reject gain from extortion and keep their hands from accepting bribes, who stop their ears against plots of murder and shut their eyes against contemplating evil they are the ones who will dwell on the heights, whose refuge will be the mountain fortress. Their bread will be supplied, and water will not fail them.

Let us turn from our sinful ways and seek the righteousness of God through the confession of our sins in silent prayer. Let us pray. SILENT PRAYER PRAYER OF CONFESSION Unison: Great and glorious God we confess that we have fallen short of Your righteousness and need the grace of Christ to overcome our sinfulness. We repent of our selfish and sinful ways and seek Your Spirit to guide us to do what is right. Bless us with Your mercy so that we might abide in You always. In Jesus name we pray. Amen ASSURANCE OF PARDON (Colossians 1:15-23) Leader: The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For in Him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together. And He is the head of the body, the church; He is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything He might have the supremacy. For God was pleased to have all His fullness dwell in Him, and through Him to reconcile to Himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through His blood, shed on the cross. Once you were alienated from God and were enemies in your minds because of your evil behavior. But now He has reconciled you by Christ s physical body through death to present you holy in His sight, without blemish and free from accusation if you continue in your faith, established and firm, and do not move from the hope held out in the gospel. Sisters and brothers in Christ, believe the good news: you are forgiven. AFFIRMATION OF FAITH The Apostles Creed Unison: I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic Church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.
