MARSH CHAPEL AT BOSTON UNIVERSITY University Interdenominational Protestant Service of Worship Sunday, July 10 th, 2016 11:00 a.m. The Eighth Sunday after Pentecost The Reverend Doctor Robert Allan Hill, Dean! Please rise, as you are able. ORDER OF WORSHIP Prelude Prelude and Fugue in C minor, Op. 37/1 Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847) Call to Worship and Greeting The Chaplain: The Chaplain: The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord!! Introit Cantate Domino (Psalm 149:1-2) Giuseppe Pitoni (1657-1743) Cantate Domino canticum novum, laus eius in Ecclesia Sanctorum. Laetetur Israel in eo, qui fecit eum, et filii Sion, exultent in rege suo. Sing unto the LORD a new song, and his praise in the congregation of saints. Let Israel rejoice in him that made him: let the children of Zion be joyful in their King.! Hymn 732 Come, we that love the Lord ST. THOMAS! Collect (in unison) O Lord, mercifully receive the prayers of your people who call upon you, and grant that they may know and understand what things they ought to do, and also may have grace and power faithfully to accomplish them; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. Kyrie from Missa Selva morale e spirituale Claudio Monteverdi (1567-1643) Kyrie eleison, Christe eleison, Kyrie eleison. Lord, have mercy, Christ, have mercy, Lord, have mercy.

Assurance of Pardon The Chaplain: All: If we confess our sins, God who is faithful and just will forgive our sins, and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Thanks be to God. Lesson Deuteronomy 30:9-14 Lector: A lesson from the Book of Deuteronomy, chapter 30, verses 9-14: and the LORD your God will make you abundantly prosperous in all your undertakings, in the fruit of your body, in the fruit of your livestock, and in the fruit of your soil. For the LORD will again take delight in prospering you, just as he delighted in prospering your ancestors, when you obey the LORD your God by observing his commandments and decrees that are written in this book of the law, because you turn to the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul. Surely, this commandment that I am commanding you today is not too hard for you, nor is it too far away. It is not in heaven, that you should say, "Who will go up to heaven for us, and get it for us so that we may hear it and observe it?" Neither is it beyond the sea, that you should say, "Who will cross to the other side of the sea for us, and get it for us so that we may hear it and observe it?" No, the word is very near to you; it is in your mouth and in your heart for you to observe. Lector: The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Anthem I was glad Henry Purcell (1659-1695) 1I was glad when they said unto me: We will go into the house of the Lord. 4For thither the tribes go up, even the tribes of the Lord: to testify unto Israel, and to give thanks unto the Name of the Lord. 5For there is the seat of judgement: even the seat of the house of David. 6O pray for the peace of Jerusalem: they shall prosper that love thee. 7Peace be within thy walls: and plenteousness within thy palaces. Psalm 122: 1, 4-7 Glory be to the Father Lesson Colossians 1:1-14 Lector: A lesson from St. Paul s Epistle to the Colossians, chapter 1, verses 1-14: Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and Timothy our brother, To the saints and faithful brothers and sisters in Christ in Colossae: Grace to you and peace from God our Father. In our prayers for you we always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, for we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love that you have for all the saints, because of the hope laid up for you in heaven. You have heard of this hope before in the word of the truth, the

gospel that has come to you. Just as it is bearing fruit and growing in the whole world, so it has been bearing fruit among yourselves from the day you heard it and truly comprehended the grace of God. This you learned from Epaphras, our beloved fellow servant. He is a faithful minister of Christ on your behalf, and he has made known to us your love in the Spirit. For this reason, since the day we heard it, we have not ceased praying for you and asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of God's will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so that you may lead lives worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him, as you bear fruit in every good work and as you grow in the knowledge of God. May you be made strong with all the strength that comes from his glorious power, and may you be prepared to endure everything with patience, while joyfully giving thanks to the Father, who has enabled you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the light. He has rescued us from the power of darkness and transferred us into the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. Lector: The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Psalm 25:1-10 The antiphon is sung twice, first by choir alone, and then by choir and congregation.! Antiphon (sung by all) To you, O LORD, I lift up my soul. O my God, in you I trust; do not let me be put to shame; do not let my enemies exult over me. Do not let those who wait for you be put to shame; let them be ashamed who are wantonly treacherous. Make me to know your ways, O LORD; teach me your paths. Lead me in your truth, and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; for you I wait all day long. Be mindful of your mercy, O LORD, and of your steadfast love, for they have been from of old. Do not remember the sins of my youth or my transgressions; according to your steadfast love remember me, for your goodness' sake, O LORD! (over)

Good and upright is the LORD; therefore he instructs sinners in the way. He leads the humble in what is right, and teaches the humble his way. All the paths of the LORD are steadfast love and faithfulness, for those who keep his covenant and his decrees.!! Gloria Patri (sung by all) WESTMINSTER ABBEY The music to this hymn is found on page 559 of the United Methodist Hymnal, verse 4. Laud and honor to the Father, laud and honor to the Son, Laud and honor to the Spirit, ever three and ever one; One in might and one in glory, while unending ages run.! Gospel Lesson Luke 10:25-37 Lector: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St. Luke, chapter 10, verses 25-37: Glory to you, O Lord. Just then a lawyer stood up to test Jesus. "Teacher," he said, "what must I do to inherit eternal life?" He said to him, "What is written in the law? What do you read there?" He answered, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself." And he said to him, "You have given the right answer; do this, and you will live." But wanting to justify himself, he asked Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?" Jesus replied, "A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell into the hands of robbers, who stripped him, beat him, and went away, leaving him half dead. Now by chance a priest was going down that road; and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. But a Samaritan while traveling came near him; and when he saw him, he was moved with pity. He went to him and bandaged his wounds, having poured oil and wine on them. Then he put him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him. The next day he took out two denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said, 'Take care of him; and when I come back, I will repay you whatever more you spend.' Which of these three, do you think, was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of the robbers?" He said, "The one who showed him mercy." Jesus said to him, "Go and do likewise." Lector: The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ. Sermon Revealing Compassion Ms. Jessica Chicka University Chaplain for International Students

! Hymn 581 Lord, whose love through humble service BEACH SPRING Call to Prayer Lead me, Lord (sung by all) LEAD ME, LORD The music to this hymn is found on page 473 of the United Methodist Hymnal. Lead me, Lord, lead me in thy righteousness; Make thy way plain before my face. For it is thou, Lord, thou, Lord only, That makest me dwell in safety. Prayers of the People The Lord s Prayer (in unison) Response adapted from Orlando Gibbons (1583-1625) There for me the Savior stands, shows his wounds and spreads his hands. God is Love! I know, and feel; Jesus weeps and loves me still. Now incline me to repent, let me now my sins lament, now my foul revolt deplore, weep, believe, and sin no more. Charles Wesley (1707-1788) Community Life and Offering At the Offertory O God, thou art my God Henry Purcell (1659-1695) 1O God, thou art my God: early will I seek thee. 2My soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh also longeth after thee: in a barren and dry land where no water is. 3Thus have I looked for thee in holiness: that I might behold thy power and glory. 4For thy loving-kindness is better than the life itself: my lips shall praise thee. 5As long as I live will I magnify thee on this manner: and lift up my hands in thy Name. 8Because thou hast been my helper: therefore under the shadow of thy wings will I rejoice. Hallelujah! Psalm 63:1-5, 8! Presentation of the Gifts (sung by all) NUN DANKET; arr. John Rutter (b. 1945) The music to this hymn is found on page 102 of the United Methodist Hymnal, verse 3 All praise and thanks to God the Father now be given, The Son, and him who reigns with them in highest heaven, The One eternal God, whom heav n and earth adore; For thus it was, is now, and shall be evermore. Amen.
