MARKS GOSPEL By Dr. S.W Marais The Son of God belongs to two worlds He is the God-Man 1:1-45 Jesus is not just a man He is the God-Man, the Christ. 1 Mark quotes Isaiah to show that this God-Man named Jesus is also Lord, equal to the Yahweh or Jehovah in the Old Testament, therefore everything God is Jesus is and everything man is Jesus is also. 2-3 John the Baptist announces that Jesus is the Son of God. 4-13 God the Father acknowledges that Jesus is His Son. 11 Mark records the Holy Spirit as recognizing that Jesus is the Son of God. 12 Even satan admits that Jesus is the Son of God. 13 Mark reminds us that the Son of God is also one with the creator. 13 Mark reveals the Son of Gods relationship to the angels in heaven. 13 We also see that the Son of God has the authority to usher in the Kingdom of God. 14-20 The demons confess that Jesus is the Son of God. 24 Jesus as the Son of God has all authority over evil spirits 21-28 Mark tells us that the Son of God has come to destroy all the works of the devil because He is all powerful. 29-38 The Son of God cleanses believers from everything that has made them unholy. 40-45 JESUS is much more than divinized man He is God in essence. 2:1-27 Jesus performs miracles of healing that only God can do. 1-13 Jesus as God alone can forgive all sin and make men holy. 5 Jesus alone can save sinners. 1-17 Jesus gives new meaning to fasting. 18-22 Jesus is Lord of the Sabbath. 23-27 Jesus is the Creating Word of God. 3;1-34, 4:1-41, 5:1-43

Jesus healed a man with a withered hand. 3:1-5dom of God. Jesus healed people with His Words. 7-12 He founded a new Israel by naming the twelve. 3-20 Using only His Word He created a new family of God. 21-35 Jesus used a parable to show His Kingdom and His rule ated God s power over nature. 4:1-34 As the Word of God enfleshed (incarnated) Jesus demonstrated His power over nature. 35-41 Jesus imparts His faith to everyman enabling them to believe in Him. 5:1-43 The signs that follow the preaching of the King 6:1-56 Jesus never forces the Kingdom of God on anyone. Wherever He finds no hunger and thirst to be part of His kingdom He moves on to find a response. 1-6 He makes it plain that He wants everyone to respond willingly to His invitation and to enter His Kingdom. He gave the good news to two by two to preach the gospel giving everyone an opportunity to respond as they heard the saving truth. God for people believed and were saved from sin and delivered from the power of the devils spirit. They were healed and many miracles followed their preaching, proving that Jesus was working through them for they had no power to do these things in their own power.. The signs that followed the kingdom preaching were holy signs and the evil one lashed out and caused the Christians heavy persecution, some were beheaded like John the Baptist, He spread misinformation about the church, and he used those who were being filled with his unholy spirit. The miracle of the five loaves and the two fish 30-44 show that Jesus had come as the living bread and those who believed in Him (who ate the bread) became the New Israel (12 baskets of bread). The bread spoke of His broken body on the cross. Jesus walks on the water and demonstrates His power over all His creations and only God has this power. Notice that it is not the faith of the disciples by which He demonstrates His power. 45-56 7:1-23 Jesus teaches that the Jews could never usher in His kingdom. It was their unbelief that opened their hearts to be filled with the evil spirit of unbelief. 1-14 Jesus goes on to prove the power of His kingdom by healing the blind man, and He now challenges Peter to openly declare his faith in Jesus as the Son of God, which he does. 5-30

Next He tells them about His death and resurrection but they were not yet ready for this truth. They wanted a national hero who would be their king and reign from Jerusalem. They thought that the Kingdom still belonged only to a Jewish Messiah 31-38. 24 Jesus heals a Syrophoenician woman who was not a Jew, to teach them that His salvation is for all people, not only the Jews. 9: 1-50 Here Jesus as Gods Son on the Mount of Transfiguration meets Moses and Elijah who hand over the authority of the Law and authority and the Prophets to Jesus and God tells the disciples to listen to Jesus only. 1-13 Coming down from the mountain Jesus finds His disciples trying to cast out a demon from a boy in their own power so He rebukes them and then demonstrates His power. Jesus teaches them that they must be childlike in their faith and not to rely on their own faith. 23-50 10:1-52 Jesus was against using people for self gratification as many of the Jewish men were doing with the woman. Kingdom people value every family member equally and it does not belong to the Jewish nation but to every believer in Christ. 13-16. The Kingdom of God is not a man s kingdom but Gods Kingdom, and He showed the rich young ruler who could say that he had kept all the commandments, but Jesus tells Him that he hin the Kingdom of God so Jesus tell him that he has already broken the first commandment by not believing in and following Him.17-31. Christians still under the control of the sin nature want to use Jews other people like to further their own ends and get into a position of controlling others. 38-42 Jesus presents them with the death to self principle and speaks of the crucifixion of their sin nature. 43-45 The Jews believed that blind people were cursed of God and do not deserve healing but Jesus demonstrates His love for every sinner in need and heals blind Bartimaeus commending him for his faith. 11: 1-33. Again the Jews are blinded by their own belief that Jesus had come to establish an earthly kingdom. He demonstrates His authority as the High Priest who had come to bring a new and holy temple so in a way He was condemning and closing down the old worship system which was stained with selfishness.12-19 The fig tree was cursed because it failed to yield fruit like Israel 20-26 Jesus claims that His authority came from His Father in heaven and therefore no one can stand in the way of the spreading of His eternal kingdom. 27-33 12: 1-44 Jesus reveals in this parable the mannere of the carnal nature, it will not submit to another authority but satans only. The evil spirit in thewm was going to crucify Jesus. 1-12

13-17 They tried to catch him out for if he had said serve only Caesar they could have said that He was against God and if He said serve only God they would have accused him of saying that Caesar was not divine but he answers Give Caesar what is his and give God what belongs to Him. They were amazed at His teaching. 18-27 Carnal people think only carnality as is seen in the stupid conclusions they presented to Jesus in an effort to undermine Him, but to no avail. The people asking the question the Sadducees did not even believe in the resurrection of the dead, their philosophy was a waste of time. 19-44 Jesus makes it clear that everyone must operate from the basis of God s love in all their dealings with others and that t5hey must love God with all their minds, heart and soul and only when connected to God s perfect love is this possible. The evil spirit of sin in them would not and could not allow them to do so, they needed a work of grace performed by God to be able to love in this way, like the old woman who gave her all to God. 13:1=37 Signs of the end of the age. Here Jesus prophesied the destruction of the temple which happened in 70AD. The signs pointing to this event would be the rise of false Christa or Messiahs, life will go on even the weather patterns will continue and persecution will continue but He would be with them as they went out and preached the gospel of the coming Kingdom. A terrible persecution would come upon the Jews even to the desecration of the Holy place and the fall of the Holy City before the last day, and they must not confuse the times because in His return He will be judge of all things once and for all. 1-23 24-37 Everyone will see Jesus returning to this planet on the last day. And we better be prepared for no one other than the Father knows the full plan. Even Jesus as the God man had to lay aside this knowledge when he became a human being, it will be a day full of surprises for all of us. 14: 1-72 - 15:1-67 We see the differences between God s Holy people and sinners under the principle and power of the sin principle. The woman with the alabaster box of ointment will not allow anything from expressing her love for Jesus and her worship is accepted by Him. Judas the thief displays an unloving attitude under the guise of thinking of the poor, he was being deceitful. 1-11 The carnal nature now energized by the devil takes over the mind and heart of Judas to betray Him. The state of sinfulness becomes stronger and stronger as a person resists the Holy Spirit. Even after the God-Man had stooped before His creation and offered Him forgiveness but the sinful mind in Judas led to him to sell Jesus for the price of a slave. He had been given the offer of being part of the Body of Jesus. 1There was grace present for him to repent but he chose his own destiny. 12-26

Although Peter using Gods grace is able to follow Jesus he still need to have his spirit delivered from the carnal nature, and Jesus tells him that still has a cowards heart that needs to be cleansed, naturally he does not see this until he denies his Lord and then only did he repent and became submissive and was filled with the Spirit and fully cleansed at Pentecost. (see Acts 2). 27-31 Like Peter many Christians believe that they can control or suppress the carnal mind but it refuses to submit to God s will (See Romans (Romans 8:6-7) Jesus reveals the true sanctified attitude He submits to His Fathers will completely. 32-42. Jesus knows what awaits Him but accepts the will pf His Father and is condemned and crucified, but Peter denies his Lord three times and becomes a coward showing where his commitment really was, he was still controlled by the evil nature that is against the work of Jesus. 43-50 Peter thinks that God s Kingdom can be ushered in by force and cuts of the ear of the high priests servant but Jesus replaces the ear and heals the man showing that He never resorts to force but always operates from forgiveness and God s love. Peter saw the error of his ways and repented and was restored to go on and be sanctified by the Holy Spirit filling his heart and mind. 15:1-67 Jesus is condemned without a fair trial showing how the devil works when he controls men s hearts and minds Jesus is tortured and condemned to be crucified showing us again how sin brings death. And Jesus died where every sinner should die for his own sins and sin and He takes the sinful nature to the grave once and for all destroying its power by introducing a greater power of Holy Life which He offers to share with all those who will believe on Him. Jesus also went into the temple in heaven and ripped away the separating veil between God and man once and for all and now invites all believers to come into the Holiest of all and live with Him in the ever present presence of God. 16: 1-20 Jesus through His death and resurrection and glorification has removed every obstacle to man being made holy by grace through faith, and He wants the whole world to hear that they can be cleaned and become God s holy people by grace through Him. He will return as King and change all His followers to be like Him.
