To have a guideline for biblical and historical definition of church renewals, revivals, and awakenings throughout the history of Christianity in the world. 2. To introduce an understanding of vital elements of Church history through exploring church renewal, revivals, spiritual awakenings and Pentecostal movements. 3. To suggest an achieving sound and realistic ideas of contemporary urban ministries with contextualized revivalism and church renewal movements. 4. Course Requirements All students should submit 3 papers on the following dates, and select one subject from the following: A. First Paper requirement from one of the following subjects: 1. Biblical Definition of Revivals and Awakenings 2. Historical Definition of Revivals and Awakenings 3. Analyze similarities and dissimilarities of Revivals, Awakenings, Reform, Revivalism, Renewal, and Pentecostalism 4. Worldwide Revivals and Awakenings in the Urban Context Due June 30th Submit a five page paper that includes introduction, critical analysis, personal application in your ministry, and conclusion with proper citation and footnote. Due July 7th B. Analytical and Critical Report by visiting sites of Revivals and Awakenings (i.e. First Church in Northampton, Newburyport Presbyterian Church, Park Street Church, Tremont Temple Baptist Church, etc.) Provide a brief five -page analysis of the report which contains: 1. Brief History of Revival in the place 2. Impact of the Revival 3. Prospect of the coming revival in the place in contemporary time
Submit an eight page paper that includes a brief history and impact of the revival with primary sources rather than secondary sources. Appendix should include photos, scanned papers, writings from archives, interviews, collecting oral tradition, and reconstructed new story by means of survey. Visitation and investigation are so crucial to get high score in the paper. Secondary sources are not highly recommended in this report. C. Final Paper: Based on the visitation of Revivals and Awakenings sites, class lectures, course required readings, bibliographical resources, and your revival experience and understanding, submit a paper on one of the following themes/issues: 1. The Endtime Revival, Latter Rain, from Biblical perspective 2. The Relationship between Revivals and Overseas Missionary Movement 3. The Impact and influence of Revivals and Awakenings over secular society 4. The Relationship between the Decline of Western Christianity and the Rise of the Third World Christianity 5. Progressive Pneumatology of Revivals and Awakenings 6. Critical analysis on Revivalism, Crusades, Organized Revival Meetings and Televangelism 7. Suggestion on Right means of Revivals and Awakenings (i.e. camp meeting, bible class, bible conference, prayer meeting, evangelistic crusades, revival meetings, etc.) 8. Compare and contrast the spiritual awakening movements on college campuses in the early nineteenth century and twenty first century Paper should be 10-12 pages (A4, Single Space, Font 12, Times New Roman); Due July 20th at CUME IV. Grade Evaluation Class grade will be evaluated as follows: Class Discussion and Participation -10% Reading Report -20% Analytical and Critical Report -30%
Final Paper -40% Late submission of papers and absences may cause deduction (e.g. regular attendance, late papers) Attendance Requirement: 2 absences: loss of a whole letter grade 3 absences: Failure Late work=half grade deduction.
