FEBRUARY 2018 VOLUME 22, #02 CARTHAGE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH MONTHLY NEWSLETTER CUMC EMAIL: carthageumcsecretary@gmail.com FROM OUR PASTOR Rev. Monica Mowdy CUMC WEBSITE: www.carthagetnumc.org Tis the season to be jolly, fa-la-la-la-la La la-la-la No, it s not Christmas but it is almost the season of Lent and Easter. This season is a time that created a flurry of activities. Many may seem meaningless but there is actual, spiritual meaning in all we do. These activities are tied to the church calendar to emphasize the importance of these activities. We have a season for Easter because the celebration of the resurrection of our Lord and Savior. Isn t a celebration like that worth more than a 24-hour nod shared with the Easter Bunny? Easter is also a season, so we can spiritually prepare for ourselves to die and rise with Christ. In other words, Easter is a chance to die to the sin we have packed on throughout the years (or throughout our lives), to assess who our spiritual direction which is in the same direction as the risen savior. Here are some activities to look forward to: Fat Tuesday, 2-13: The last day before the Lenten/Easter season begins. In days of old this day was to stuff yourself with all the fattening foods to prepare for the Lenten fast ahead. We plan to do the same. The youth are hosting an all you can eat pancake supper to raise money. Ash Wednesday, 2-14: The beginning of the season of Lent. Lent is a time when many Christians prepare for Easter by observing a period of fasting, repentance, moderation, and spiritual discipline. CUMC will have an Ash Wednesday Service at 6pm. Lenten Sundays, 2-18 through 3-25: these Sunday s give us an opportunity reflect our brokenness and our restoration in Christ. Palm Sunday, 3-25: The Sunday before Easter, when the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem is celebrated in many Christian churches by processions in which palm fronds are carried. Maundy Thursday, 3-29: The time to celebrate the Lord s Supper. We will not be having a Maundy Thursday Service this year at CUMC because our confirmands will be hosting a special meal for their families. Good Friday, 3-30: The Friday before Easter Sunday, on which the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ is commemorated in the Christian Church. CUMC will have a worship service at 6pm on Good Friday. I look forward to traveling through Lent to Easter together. Check out Church Knows Church on YouTube to find out more. Blessings and Peace, Rev. Monica Mowdy, Sr. Pastor

UPDATE ON MRS. CLELLIE BUTLER The following is a copy of an email received by the church office on Tuesday, January 23 rd concerning Mrs. Clellie Butler. It has been some time since I have given everyone an update on Mom. I Placed her on Hospice care about 10 days ago. For several weeks she has stopped eating and drinking except a little bit occasionally. She also has a significant pressure wound on her left foot around the bunion area and a smaller one on the side. These wounds were caused by her foot rubbing against her wheelchair leg. Her skin is very thin and fragile. It started out as a small blister but continued to enlarge. She is being treated for the wound with a product called Santyl three times a week; prior to that, it was daily before hospice. It is not expected to heal because of her diet. She needs lots of protein, other vitamins, etc. for healing, and since she doesn t eat and get proper nourishment, it will most likely get worse. She has lost a significant amount of weight and only weighed 77 pounds a couple of weeks ago; she may weigh even less now. The dementia has escalated as one would expect. She does not know us now, and conversation that is meaningful and understandable is almost nonexistent. She keeps her eyes closed a great deal and naps a lot. This morning after her bath and shampoo, she was a little more alert with her eyes open several different times, and she did attempt to communicate a little. She even gave me a couple kisses on the hand. She doesn t appear to be in pain particularly except when they are changing the dressing on her foot or moving her from different positions in her wheelchair or lounge chair. I ask for prayers from the congregation for her comfort during this time. Thanks, Ernie Berkau If you would like to send a card to Mrs. Clellie; her address is: Clellie Butler Arbors of Willow Springs 1042 Campbell Springs Parkway Spring Hill TN 37174 Be sure to like us on Facebook: Carthage United Methodist Church @CarthageUMCtn BE SURE TO CHECK OUT OUR NEW CHURCH WEBSITE AT: CARTHAGETNUMC.ORG
