Staff Transitions Eric Vogel has served FBC as a volunteer helper, teacher, and leader in children s ministry since he was a student at Knox College. Last year, Eric took over primary leadership of Connect, our Wednesday night children s program from January through to its conclusion in April. He led with distinction. A few months ago, Eric communicated to Pastor Jordan and me that he was sensing a call to vocational Christian ministry. This was no surprise to us because we have long recognized his gifting for ministry. Recognizing his giftedness and an opportunity to help equip him for his calling, we have designed an internship in children s ministry that will last through the school year. In addition, we have applied to the Great Rivers Region for a matching grant to help fund a modest stipend for him. The position will begin August 15th. Eric s responsibilities will include oversight and leadership of the Wednesday night school-age program, the twice-monthly children s church program, and the recruitment and leadership of a children s ministry team. Of course, this raises a question regarding Pastor Jordan s responsibilities. Eric s oversight of children s ministry will release Jordan to cultivate missional relationships and opportunities between the church and the community in the coming months. We ll explain more in the next church newsletter. In the meantime, we are excited about what lies ahead for us in the coming months and we welcome Eric Vogel to the pulpit this morning! Don't Forget to Pack Jesus Mark 1:35-39 NIV Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed. Simon and his companions went to look for him, and when they found him, they exclaimed: Everyone is looking for you! Jesus replied, Let us go somewhere else--to the nearby villages--so that I can preach there also. That is why I have come. So he travelled throughout Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and driving out demons. Mark 1:35-39, NIV. This week s sermon and bulletin are available at fbcgalesburg.org
On Mission: Scott & Aphiwan Coats - Thai boys rescued from cave I am sure all of you have been following the story of the Thai Boys in the Cave here in Chiang Rai. It really has been amazing how this story has completely riveted the whole world. Some of you have written and asked what connection we may have or have had regarding the whole event. I had initially thought the only connection for us was that for several years, in the cool season (when the rains have stopped), my sons and I would go camping with some other boys and their dads in a meadow outside this very cave and then explore it (Tham Luang) for several hours at a time. So my boys, who are now young men studying in the US, and I were very familiar with the situation when this story came to light. However, last week Pastor Go Shin Muang, Adun's pastor, let us know that Adun was one of the boys in the cave, then it suddenly got very close. Adun, the boy attributed as the only one who could communicate with the British diver who found them, is on scholarship with the Mekong Minority Foundation and is part of a group of 20 disadvantaged migrant children from Myanmar that MMF works with to build life skills and disciple to be young people of faith. I have known Pastor Shin Muang for about 10 years. His church, Grace Maesai Church, is, to me, an example of what MMF strives to encourage amongst the ethnic minority churches in the Mekong Subregion. This church, only established a year before I met Pastor Shin Muang, saw needs in the community and responded. And they continue to do so. Every time I talked to him, he would say the church had started another ministry. This is an amazing congregation. They have a home for battered women, a school for migrant children that teaches in Burmese, English and Thai, a home for Wa boys who otherwise would be conscripted as Wa child soldiers, a legal support and advocacy team to help community members from Myanmar with legal and human rights issues, and also a goal to plant 10 churches over 5 years. So guess what, not only do we have a connection with the Thai Boys in the Cave story, since you all are the force (prayer and support) behind the Coats family, that makes you all connected to Adun and the cave story too! We are all part of body of Christ working together! Thank you for the part you all play in God's kingdom in our work here and so many other places around the world.
