Christ Church Grosse Pointe The Third Sunday of Advent December 16, 2018 8 am Welcome to this service of Holy Eucharist at Christ Church Grosse Pointe. We hope that this service will help lift you to the presence of God and strengthen you for the week to come. Scripture readings are printed in Currents (leaflet insert). Holy Eucharist: Rite II The Announcements The Lighting of the Advent Wreath We light this third candle, recalling John the Baptist, God s prophet, who prepared the way for Jesus to come. John declared, One who is more powerful than I is coming after me. The third candle of Advent is lighted. The Lord says, I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you. Lord, help us to be patient and stand firm, because the Lord s coming is near. Opening Acclamation Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. And blessed be God s kingdom, now and for ever. Amen. The prays the Collect for Purity, and the people respond Amen. Kyrie Eleison Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. The Collect for the Day The Word of God The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. Stir up your power, O Lord, and with great might come among us; and, because we are sorely hindered by our sins, let your bountiful grace and mercy speedily help and deliver us; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory, now and for ever. Amen. The people are seated for the reading and the Psalm.

The Reading Zephaniah 3:14-20 Reader The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Canticle 9 The Lector and Congregation read the psalm responsively by half verse. The Gospel Luke 3:7-18 Gospeller The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. Glory to you, Lord Christ. The Gospel is read. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ. The people are seated at the invitation of the preacher. The Sermon The Reverend Andrew Van Culin A brief period of silence is observed for reflection on the sermon. The Nicene Creed All We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

The Prayers of the Those celebrating birthdays and anniversaries are invited to come forward. Leader As we keep the season of Advent, may it be a time of reflection and love. Let us be awake to the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ as we offer our prayers to the God who comes to help us. For the holy Catholic Church, for bishops, priests and deacons, and for all the people of God; let us pray to the Lord. For all the nations, and for the people of this land and our leaders, that we may be guided in the way of justice, freedom, and peace; let us pray to the Lord. For N., for travelers and the healing of the sick, for the hungry and homeless, for the oppressed, for refugees and immigrants, and for those who come to us as strangers, that they may know the welcome of Christ; let us pray to the Lord. For those whose lives are closely linked with ours, and for those on our parish cycle of prayer (N.); let us pray to the Lord. For those expecting babies, and for those who give life to others; let us pray to the Lord. For the comfort of the dying, and for (N. and) those who have gone before us marked with the sign of faith; let us pray to the Lord. For ourselves, our families and friends, and those we love, and for those who do not know love; let us pray to the Lord. We offer our petitions and thanksgivings to God, either silently or aloud. The people may add their own petitions. Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayer. Joining our voices with the Blessed Virgin Mary, Blessed Joseph, Saint Margaret, and all the saints and angels of God, let us offer ourselves and one another to the living God through Christ. To you, O Lord, our God. We pray for those in our congregation who are celebrating a birthday or an anniversary, saying, O God, our times are in your hand: Look with favor, we pray, on your servants as they begin another year. Grant that they may grow in wisdom and grace, and strengthen their trust in your goodness all the days of their lives; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Confession and Absolution Gospeller Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor. The people kneel. A brief period of silence is observed. Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought word and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen. The offers the absolution, and the people respond Amen. The Peace The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. The people greet one another with a sign of God s peace and then are seated. The Offertory The people remain seated while the offering is collected. The Great Thanksgiving The Holy Communion Eucharistic Prayer B The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of Heaven and earth. Because you sent your beloved Son to redeem us from sin and death, and to make us heirs in him of everlasting life; that when he shall come again in power and great triumph to judge the world, we may without shame or fear rejoice to behold his appearing. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

Sanctus & Benedictus All Holy, Holy, Holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. The people kneel or remain standing. We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life. On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me. Therefore, according to his command, O Father, We remember his death, We proclaim his resurrection, We await his coming in glory; And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine. We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with the Blessed Virgin Mary, Blessed Joseph, St. Margaret, and all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and forever. AMEN.

The Lord s Prayer All The Breaking of the Bread And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. A period of silence is kept. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us; Therefore let us keep the feast. The Invitation The people are seated. To receive Communion, come to the Communion Station or to the Altar Rail. If you wish to receive a blessing rather than Communion, cross your arms over your chest this will alert the priest to your request. Gluten free wafers are available upon request. The Postcommunion Prayer Let us pray. All Eternal God, heavenly Father, you have graciously accepted us as living members of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ, and you have fed us with spiritual food in the Sacrament of his Body and Blood. Send us now into the world in peace, and grant us strength and courage to love and serve you with gladness and singleness of heart; through Christ our Lord. Amen. The Blessing The Lord be with you. And also with you. The blesses the people. Amen. The Dismissal The Gospeller dismisses the people. Thanks be to God.
