Pentecost June 12 August 27, 2011 (The pulpit attire is Red) 2 PENTECOST, the fiftieth day after Easter, comes from the Greek word for fiftieth, pentekoste. Greek speaking Jews called the Jewish Feast of Weeks the Day of Pentecost. Acts 2 tells how the anxious and fearful disciples, who had gathered on the Day of Pentecost, were filled with the Holy Spirit and thereafter preached boldly the gospel of Jesus Christ. This is the day on which the church received the Holy Spirit. COLORS FOR PENTECOST: RED OR RED ON WHITE. RED, THE COLOR OF FIRE, REPRESENTS THE HOLY SPIRIT. JUNE*JULY*AUGUST 2011 General Theme For This Quarter: GOD INSTRUCTS THE PEOPLE OF GOD The study focuses on our relationship with God as a community of faith. The Old Testament books of Joshua, Judges, and Ruth form the backdrop for a study of what it means to live out the love of God in community. CLASSES FOR EVERYONE!! CLASSES FROM KINDERGARTEN TO SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL ADULTS ALL AGES WELCOME We hope that you will join us as we are focusing on: A CASE STUDY IN COMMUNITY UNIT #3 DAILY BIBLE READING These four lessons all relate to the story of Ruth and her eventual marriage to Boaz. This marriage continues the Davidic line. This is the line through which Jesus Christ, the Messiah, will come. THIS WEEK S: CHOOSING A COMMUNITY Ruth 1:8 18 Confronted with famine and the death of her husband and two sons, Naomi felt that she had nothing to share with her daughters in law except adversity. Naomi realized that for Ruth, Orpah, and herself, becoming widows meant the loss of security and identity. She implored her daughters in law to return to their families in Moab while she returns to Judah. Ruth refused to go home, but made a passionate plea to remain with Naomi, her people, and her God. NEXT WEEK S: August 21, 2011 EMPOWERING THE NEEDY Ruth 2:8 18 In the time of the judges, widows were vulnerable and subject to being ignored, taken advantage of, and often forced into poverty. Boaz followed God s Law by allowing Ruth to glean in his field (Leviticus 19:9 10 and Deuteronomy 24:19 22). * MONDAY: Sharing Bread with the Poor Proverbs 22:1 9 * TUESDAY: Provision for the Poor Leviticus 19:1 10 * WEDNESDAY: Generosity in the Kingdom Matthew 20:1 15 * THURSDAY: Sharing Equally 1 Samuel 30:21 25 * FRIDAY: Ready to Share 1Timothy 6:11 19 * SATURDAY: Taking Initiative Ruth 2:1 7 * SUNDAY: A Kind Benefactor Ruth 2:8 18 Sermon Highlights: August 7, 2011 Sermon Title: So You Want To Be A Disciple! Scriptural Text: Luke 14:25 35 Main Idea: Discipleship makes some radical demands on people. Discipleship talks about loosing our lives, paying a price, and giving up all to follow Christ. Jesus wants us to follow Him as disciples. Discipleship demands: Points: (1) that you put Him first in everything and love Him more than anyone else (2) that you must bear your own cross (3) that you do more than wave your discipleship ID card; it s about participation For the full message order a CD or DVD of the service from the Media Ministry. MOBC HOW TO ACCEPT JESUS CHRIST INTO YOUR HEART Perhaps while reading the announcements you realized you have never made a Christian commitment. Don t delay that decision! We encourage you to embrace God s love today and receive the salvation that only Jesus Christ gives. Here are five simple steps you can take to find assurance of salvation. Photography Ministry We need your help to capture the good works of MOBC on film! your ministry is planning a church event IF you are a new MOBC member you are interested in joining the team Please contact Sis. Diane Taylor [804.447.2982] or Bro. Jerry Williams [804.304.1030] ATTENTION MOUNT OLIVE, WE HAVE GROWN! 5 1. Recognize your need. The Bible tell us that all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. (Rom. 3:23) All of us are sinners, and we must admit our need for a Savior. 2. Repent of your sins. Our sins create a wall that separates us from God. By confessing our sins and turning from them, you will find forgiveness. The Bible promises: If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9). 3. Believe in Jesus. God sent His only Son to die so that He could pay for all our sins. Put your faith in Him and believe in His power to save you. The Bible says, For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life (John 3:16). 4. Receive His salvation. God has given us a great gift in His Son, but we must receive His gift. Thank Him for loving and forgiving you, and ask Him to live in your heart. His promise to us is clear: But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God (John 1:12). 5. Confess your faith. The Bible assures us: If you confess with your mouth, Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved (Rom. 10:9). You have been born again and are now part of God s family. Tell someone else what Jesus has done in your life! TO WHOM MUCH IS GIVEN, MUCH IS EXPECTED (LUKE 12:48) The Lord has blessed us with an abundance of youth in need of care and nurturing during worship and Bible Study. THE YOUTH MINISTRY IS IN NEED OF THE FOLLOWING: SUNDAY 11AM NURSERY ATTENDANTS: We will train you to attend to the children age1 5 during the worship service once per month. You will not be alone. Other Nursery workers will assist you. Please see Rev. Kelly or Adrienne Westbrook if you can assist. WEDNESDAY BIBLE STUDY YOUTH WORKERS: We will train you to assist in conducting age appropriate Bible Study lessons, including contemporary non traditional presentations to assist youth in applying The Word to their every day life. Youth Bible Study meets most Wednesdays at 7 8pm. You can select which Wednesday per month you would like to teach. Please see Rev. Kelly or Carolyn Debnam if you can assist. You did not choose me but I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit; fruit that will last. John 15:16 Church School Teachers Needed! Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it. Proverbs. 22:6 Can you commit to one hour on Sunday Mornings? If you can, Church School is in need of three teachers to teach our Primary and Junior students. First timers, as well as seasoned teachers will appreciate the user friendly teacher guide that makes teaching fun and easy. Therefore, if you have taught or have a desire to teach and help train up a child the way of the Lord, please contact Rev. Smith at 262 9614. CASUAL DRESS SUNDAYS MOBC will enjoy the comfort of casual dressing during the month of August. Please be mindful of the Church and who we represent as members of the Body of Christ. To help us determine what is/is not appropriate, please use the following guidelines when selecting appropriate casual dress: Choose clothing that is comfortable, yet communicates a positive message, casual does not mean sloppy, avoid clothing that is too revealing or tight fitting. Scripture Reference: Whether therefore ye eat, or drink or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God. (1Corinthians 10:31)

I n t e r c e s s o r y P r a y e r C o r n e r Month of August Faith Father, we come acknowledging and looking to Jesus who is the author and finisher of our faith. Jesus is the one who has done everything for us to endure in our faith. We know that without faith it is impossible to please you. Give us the mindset to trust you for what we believe yet we do not see. Increase our faith in the areas in our lives where we show little faith. Grant us the power of mustard seed faith, and not doubt that we can speak to mountains of physical, spiritual, and emotional bondage. That these MOUNTAINS will be removed and cast into the sea, because we believe that God will accomplish the impossible. Grant us the faith to believe that you are able to do exceedingly, abundantly, above all we can ask or think, knowing that eyes have not seen, ears have not heard, nor entered into the hearts the things that you have prepared for THOSE who love you. We receive righteous because of our faith; we receive inheritance because of our faith; we receive divine intervention because of our faith; and we receive healing because of our faith. So now unto God who is able to keep us from stumbling, we believe that whatsoever we ask in this prayer, it shall be done in JESUS name.
