February 6, 2013 Volume 27 Issue 3 From the Pastor What s in it for me? This has become a standard question in our lives. We ask it when we are deciding about buying something, joining something, or using our time for something. The frequency of this question is evidence that we have become a radically pragmatic culture. Pragmatic, of course, means useful or of practical benefit. This standard is now applied to spirituality, to faith, to God. Religion turns in the direction of self-help psychology, and the most popular forms of spirituality are the ones that are most self-serving. There has been a subtle rearrangement in our churches. It makes us the center of worship rather than God. Wise, prophetic Walter Brueggemann says this current fascination with cheerful, upbeat, I- centered worship comes not so much from biblical faith as from the wishful optimism of our culture. And he says that the culture is in denial about the disorientation of life in a world disenfranchised from God. In our current Wednesday evening series on Being Church, we are honoring the fact that our church, across its sixty years, has tried to take worship seriously. We have a responsibility to keep faith with this tradition. Our future depends on it. The object and center of Christian is God - - - specifically God as revealed in Jesus Christ. Adoration is the most selfless of all emotions. Worship is adoration. In authentic worship I is the last thing on my mind. O come, let us worship and bow down, let us kneel before the Lord our maker. (Psa. 95:6) David Lenten Devotional Guide Return to Me, by Dr. Terry York, is a devotional guide designed to accompany us along the forty-day Lenten journey. Dr. York has written poetic texts, for use during Holy Week, that contrast modern language and expressions with those of the ancient biblical texts. Taylor Davis has set these poems to music, as a complement to this devotional guide. Our forty-day Lenten journey will lead to Maundy Thursday service on March 7, 7:30 pm with a presentation of Return to Me and concludes Saturday prior to Easter. The Lenten Devotional Guide will be available on the Royal Lane website and Facebook with printed copies for those who do not have or utilize internet access. Printed copies are available outside the church office beginning this Sunday and will be available at Wednesday Midweek. Devotions are provided for the 40 days prior to Easter, beginning with Ash Wednesday and excluding Sundays. The next issues of The Mosaic are scheduled for February 20 & March 6, 2013. The deadline for submissions will be 5:00 p.m. Tuesday prior to the date of publication.
