December 16, 2018 Fellowship Hall Service 9:30 and 11:00 a.m. Third Sunday in Advent

Order of Worship * Welcome and greetings Brian Salter, lead pastor * Call to worship based on Isaiah 9 Leader: The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned. All: We praise the Lord Most High! For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Leader: Of the increase of his government and peace there will be no end. All: He will reign on David s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this. * Hymn of praise Angels We Have Heard on High Angels we have heard on high, sweetly singing o er the plains, and the mountains in reply echo back their joyous strains. Gloria in excelsis Deo, gloria in excelsis Deo. Shepherds, why this jubilee? Why your joyous strains prolong? Say what may the tidings be, which inspire your heav nly song? Gloria in excelsis Deo, gloria in excelsis Deo. Come to Bethlehem and see him whose birth the angels sing; come, adore on bended knee Christ the Lord, the newborn King. Gloria in excelsis Deo, gloria in excelsis Deo. traditional French carol * Prayer of adoration

Affirmation of faith (11:00) taken from John 1 and Colossians 1 Leader: In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. All: Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it. Leader: There came a man who was sent from God; his name was John. He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all men might believe. He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light. The true light that gives light to every man was coming into the world. All: By him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. Call to confession taken from Romans 12 and Acts 3 I urge you, brothers, in view of God s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God this is your spiritual act of worship. Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Repent, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord. Hymn of confession O Little Town of Bethlehem O little town of Bethlehem, how still we see thee lie; above thy deep and dreamless sleep the silent stars go by: yet in thy dark streets shineth the everlasting Light; the hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight. O holy child of Bethlehem, descend to us, we pray; cast out our sin and enter in; be born in us today. We hear the Christmas angels the great glad tidings tell; O come to us, abide with us, our Lord Emmanuel. text by Phillips Brooks, 1868 Silent prayers of confession

Assurance of God s pardoning grace taken from Romans 5 and Colossians 1 God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. He has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. * Hymn of assurance From the Squalor of a Borrowed Stable From the squalor of a borrowed stable, by the Spirit and a virgin s faith; to the anguish and the shame of scandal, came the Savior of the human race! But the skies were filled with the praise of heav n, shepherds listen as the angels tell of the gift of God come down to man, at the dawning of Immanuel! King of heaven now the Friend of sinners, humble servant in the Father s hands, filled with power and the Holy Spirit, filled with mercy for the broken man. Yes, he walked my road and he felt my pain, joys and sorrows that I know so well; yet his righteous steps give me hope again I will follow my Immanuel! Through the kisses of a friend s betrayal, he was lifted on a cruel cross; he was punished for a world s transgressions, he was suffering to save the lost. He fights for breath, he fights for me, loosing sinners from the claims of hell; and with a shout our souls are free death defeated by Immanuel! Now he s standing in the place of honor, crowned with glory on the highest throne, interceding for his own beloved, till his Father calls to bring them home! Then the skies will part as the trumpet sounds hope of heaven or the fear of hell; but the bride will run to her Lover s arms, giving glory to Immanuel! text and music by Stuart Townend 1999 Thankyou Music. ARR, UBP, CCLI Lic. #152036 Worship in the giving of God s tithe and our offerings Offertory hymn Infant Holy, Infant Lowly Infant holy, infant lowly, for his bed a cattle stall; oxen lowing, little knowing Christ, the babe, is Lord of all. Swift are winging angels singing, noels ringing, tidings bringing: Christ the babe is Lord of all. Christ the babe is Lord of all. Flocks were sleeping: shepherds keeping vigil till the morning new saw the glory, heard the story, tidings of a gospel true. Thus rejoicing, free from sorrow, praises voicing greet the morrow: Christ the babe was born for you. Christ the babe was born for you. Polish carol, paraphrased by Edith M. G. Reed, ca. 1925

Luke 1:57-80 57 When it was time for Elizabeth to have her baby, she gave birth to a son. 58 Her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown her great mercy, and they shared her joy. 59 On the eighth day they came to circumcise the child, and they were going to name him after his father Zechariah, 60 but his mother spoke up and said, No! He is to be called John. 61 They said to her, There is no one among your relatives who has that name. 62 Then they made signs to his father, to find out what he would like to name the child. 63 He asked for a writing tablet, and to everyone s astonishment he wrote, His name is John. 64 Immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue was loosed, and he began to speak, praising God. 65 The neighbors were all filled with awe, and throughout the hill country of Judea people were talking about all these things. 66 Everyone who heard this wondered about it, asking, What then is this child going to be? For the Lord s hand was with him. 67 His father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied: 68 Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel, because he has come and has redeemed his people. 69 He has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David 70 (as he said through his holy prophets of long ago), 71 salvation from our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us 72 to show mercy to our fathers and to remember his holy covenant, 73 the oath he swore to our father Abraham: 74 to rescue us from the hand of our enemies, and to enable us to serve him without fear 75 in holiness and righteousness before him all our days. 76 And you, my child, will be called a prophet of the Most High; for you will go on before the Lord to prepare the way for him, 77 to give his people the knowledge of salvation through the forgiveness of their sins, 78 because of the tender mercy of our God, by which the rising sun will come to us from heaven 79 to shine on those living in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the path of peace. 80 And the child grew and became strong in spirit; and he lived in the desert until he appeared publicly to Israel.
