Service of Worship Twentieth Sunday after Pentecost October 22, 2017 Eleven o clock in the morning Bridging Faith and Learning Roman Denarius, via Creative Commons In today s service, the Chapel is excited to commission the newest group of Chapel Scholars. We are also pleased to welcome all parents and other family members who are worshiping with us today as part of Duke s Family Weekend. In this morning s Gospel reading, the Pharisees attempt to entrap Jesus with a challenging question about the law and paying tax to the Roman emperor. Jesus in turn challenges their malice by exposing their hypocrisy and teaching Give therefore to the emperor the things that are the emperor s, and to God the things that are God s.

The Chapel welcomes families with children; if at any time during the service your child needs a place for active play, please know there is a nursery in the Chapel basement. On this Communion Sunday, families with children are invited to sit up front, so they can better observe The Great Thanksgiving. The congregation is invited to reflect silently during the prelude as a time of prayer and meditation. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways to the glory of your name. Amen. The minister speaks words of assurance. *Peace (All exchange signs and words of God s peace.) Dr. Hollowell: We thank you, Lord, for the churches that have formed these students, and for the communities on campus that nourish and enrich their faith. Bless these Chapel Scholars as they listen for your voice and respond to your call, and show them how to find freedom in your service. New Scholars: Amen.
