Pastor Eric L. Bodenstab Eleventh Sunday After Pentecost ZION EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH Firelands Lutherans Active in Mission (FLAMe) 503 Columbus Avenue, Sandusky, OH 44870 (419) 625-2112 zionelc@zionsandusky.org Deacon, Carolyn Steinfeldt August 20, 2017 8:00 & 10:30 a.m. Worship INTRODUCTION TO THE DAY In Isaiah we hear that God s house shall be a house of prayer for all people and that God will gather the outcasts of Israel. The Canaanite woman in today s gospel is a Gentile, an outsider, who is unflinching in her request that Jesus heal her daughter. As Jesus commends her bold faith, how might our church extend its mission to those on the margins of society? In our gathering around word and meal we receive strength to be signs of comfort, healing, and justice for those in need. ANNOUNCEMENTS GATHERING PRELUDE: In Christ There is No East or West Anna Laura Page Please stand CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you and worthily magnify your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another. Most merciful God, we confess that we are captive to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. 2

In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for us, and for his sake God forgives us all our sins. As a called and ordained minister of the church of Christ, and by his authority, I therefore declare to you the entire forgiveness of all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. GATHERING SONG: HYMN #886 Oh, For a Thousand Tongues to Sing GREETING The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. TEMPLE TALK KYRIE 3

CANTICLE OF PRAISE 4

PRAYER OF THE DAY Let us pray. God of all peoples, your arms reach out to embrace all those who call upon you. Teach us as disciples of your Son to love the world with compassion and constancy, that your name may be known throughout the earth, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Please be seated CHILDREN S MESSAGE WORD FIRST READING: Isaiah 56:1,6-8 Pages 672 in the NRSV pew Bible The prophet calls upon Israel to do justice in view of God s imminent intervention to save. Righteousness and obedience define who belongs to the Israelite community not race, nationality, or any other category. The reading concludes: The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. 5

PSALM 67 (read responsively) 1 May God be merciful to us and bless us; may the light of God s face shine upon us. 2 Let your way be known upon earth, your saving health among all nations. 3 Let the peoples praise you, O God; let all the peoples praise you. 4 Let the nations be glad and sing for joy, for you judge the peoples with equity and guide all the nations on earth. 5 Let the peoples praise you, O God; let all the peoples praise you. 6 The earth has brought forth its increase; God, our own God, has blessed us. 7 May God give us blessing, and may all the ends of the earth stand in awe. SECOND READING: Romans 11:1-2a, 29-32 Page 1032-1033 in the NRSV pew Bible God has not rejected Israel. Rather, the call and gifts of God are irrevocable, so that while all have been disobedient, God has mercy upon all. The reading concludes: The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Please stand GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Jesus preached the good news of the kingdom* and cured every sickness a- mong the people. 6

The holy gospel according to Matthew. Glory to you, O Lord. GOSPEL: Matthew 15:21-28 Pages 892 in the NRSV pew Bible Jesus teaches his disciples that true purity is a matter of the heart rather than outward religious observances. Almost immediately, this teaching is tested when a woman considered to be pagan and unclean approaches him for help. The reading concludes: This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. Please be seated SERMON Please stand HYMN OF THE DAY #610 O Christ, the Healer, We Have Come APOSTLES CREED I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. PEACE The peace of Christ be with you always. And also with you. Please be seated 7

MEAL OFFERTORY: From the Inside Out Joel Houston Soloist: Savannah Castello Please stand A thousand times I ve failed, Still your mercy remains. And should I stumble again, I m caught in your grace. Everlasting, Your light will shine when all else fades. Never ending, Your glory goes beyond all fame. Your will above all else My purpose remains. The art of losing myself in bringing You praise. Everlasting, Your light will shine when all else fades. Never ending, Your glory goes beyond all fame. In my heart and my soul, well, I give You control. Consume me from the inside out, Lord. And let justice and praise Become my embrace, To love You from the inside out. Everlasting, Your light will shine when all else fades. Never ending, Your glory goes beyond all fame. And the cry of my heart is to bring You praise From the inside out, Lord, my soul cries out OFFERTORY HYMN #742 What a Friend We Have in Jesus (verse 3) OFFERTORY PRAYER Let us pray. Blessed are you, O God, maker of all things. Through your goodness you have blessed us with these gifts: ourselves, our time, and our possessions. Use us, and what we have gathered, in feeding the world with your love, through the one who gave himself for us, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. 8

THE GREAT THANKGIVING DIALOGUE The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. PREFACE SANCTUS THANKSGIVING AT THE TABLE Holy, mighty, and merciful Lord... to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be all honor and glory, now and forever. 9

LORD S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power and the glory, forever and ever. Amen Please be seated DISTRIBUTION OF HOLY COMMUNION 10

(Firelands Lutheran Youth) Announcements: Today s Gospel reading is from Matthew 15:21-28. Why did Jesus change His mind and help this Canaanite woman? [She demonstrated faith in Christ.] How did she demonstrate faith in Christ? By the words that came out of her MOUTH, this woman professed faith in a loving and powerful God. Her daughter benefited from that faith! Application: When you have a need, do you seek Jesus? All of the children of God have a right to come to His table and seek to be cared for. How do you know if you are a child of God? By putting your total faith in Jesus! Children s Announcements: Today s lesson is found in Matthew 15:21-28. It tells us about a woman who had great faith (faith is believing and trusting in something a lot!) in Jesus. Just like the faith of the woman in this story, our faith can unlock (open up) the power of God in our lives. (Think of a lock. What do you need to open that lock? A key! Faith in God is our key to open up the power of God in our lives!) There is a song that says: My God is so big (great) So strong and so mighty There s nothing my God cannot do for you. Heavenly Father, help us to remember that no matter what problems we may face, our faith in you is the key that unlocks your mighty power. In Jesus' name we pray. We are looking for all children who want to sing and have fun! If you have any questions, emailzioncherubchoir@gmail.com Rally Day is coming up on September 10 th and you won t want to miss it!
