St. Rosalie s Bulletin www.saintrosalie.com Page 3 From the Desk of Father Maddaloni We are ready. Bring it on. Decorating, sending cards, hosting and attending parties, shopping for gifts, cooking and baking, traveling long distances to attend celebrations bring it all on. To be truthful, we like these things (or most of them), and they are GOOD things. We should enjoy them. A danger is that we can confuse the Advent season with the Christmas season. In some ways, many people skip over Advent. What a shame. The Church sets aside these weeks for us to contemplate the coming of our Lord and to prepare ourselves for him. Yes, it is true that there is much to do in these weeks leading up to Christmas, but I know that, surrounded by tinsel, we can still have Advent. I hope you enjoy this time and the joy around you. I hope, too, that you cherish Advent. Spend some time with Christ even as you anticipate the celebration of his birth. Spend some time asking him how you can follow him even more closely. Spend time thanking him for his call (yes, he calls you). Spend time just being with him. This will be time well spent. Happy Advent. The Feast of the Immaculate Conception The Feast of the Immaculate Conception (December 8) is a holy day of obligation. This year it falls on a Saturday, and that complicates things just a little. The vigil Mass will be at 7 p.m. on Friday, December 7. On the actual feast day, December 8, the 8 a.m. Mass and the noon Mass will satisfy the obligation for the feast. There is no Mass in East Quogue this year for this holy day. The 5 p.m. Mass on December 8 will not satisfy the obligation for the Immaculate Conception; it is the regular Sunday vigil Mass. We must attend Mass for the Immaculate Conception and attend Mass again for Sunday. Celebrating Our Lady and Our Lord On December 7 at 6 p.m. before the vigil Mass for the Immaculate Conception, members of the Spanish speaking community will be lighting lanterns outside the church and reciting the rosary in Spanish. Immediately after the 7 p.m. Mass on December 7, our choir will share the gift of their music. After the Mass, there will be a short concert of about 45 minutes for anyone who is able to stay. Also immediately following the 7 p.m. Mass on December 7, members of the Spanish speaking community invite all of us to come together in the Community Center for food and fellowship to celebrate this sacred feast. After the 5 p.m. Mass on December 8, we will have our annual tree lighting and blessing of the crèche. Please join us outside the church for hot chocolate and, if you re small enough, pony rides. During the night of December 8, from about 9 p.m. to about 1 a.m., the church will be open for adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. This night is the Night of Prayer for Life. The rosary will be said. December 12 is the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. There will be events in Spanish throughout much of the day in the church. Do you run? The Guadalupe Run will start at 2 p.m. from Ponquogue Beach to the church. On December 24, confessions will be heard in the church from 10:30 a.m. until noon. There will be NO Holy day Mass in East Quogue. Retirement Fund for Religious Next Weekend Please give to those who have given a lifetime. Elderly religious need your help. There are more than 32,000 senior Catholic sisters, brothers, and religious order priests living in the United States. Through prayer, love, and sacrifice, they established Catholic schools, hospitals, and more. Yet years of serving for little or no pay have left a shortage in retirement funding. Your gift helps their religious communities furnish necessities such as medications and nursing care. It also helps ensure younger members can continue the good works of their elders. Please be generous. Altar Rosary Society The Altar Rosary Christmas brunch/lunch will be held Sunday, December 9 at 12 noon, Edgewater Restaurant. The luncheon is open to members and their families. Please call Teresa Drew at 631-728-6144 for more information and reservations. There will be no meeting for the Altar Rosary Society during the months of December, January and February. Movie Night! St. Vincent de Paul Society Reflection As we begin Advent we are called to wait in joyful anticipation for the grace of Christmas to once again bless our lives. Wherever you live in our parish, there are poor families within walking distance of your home. When in need, they ring the rectory bell. They are, in effect, ringing your doorbell. Your gift in the St. Vincent de Paul poor box will help the poor celebrate the grace of God s love this Christmas. Stewardship Reflection Be on guard, Jesus warns in today s gospel, lest your spirits become bloated with indulgence. Let us heed His warning and follow the advice of St. Paul, conducting ourselves in a way pleasing to God, overflowing with love for one another. We are grateful this week for all stewards in our parish who embrace Stewardship by recognizing God as the origin of life, the giver of freedom, the source of all they have and all they are.
