MARS UP CHURCH We are your hometown church: Faithful to Tradition, Loving in Fellowship & Reaching for Tomorrow! June 2017 This past weekend was one of the most special weekends of my life. Saturday afternoon, Marian s sister, her brother and his wife came to Mars for the Memorial Day weekend. Saturday morning, I met with a couple who want to have their son baptized in a few weeks. Sunday morning the choir sang a glorious anthem, Jamie played an amazing offertory, and we had a large crowd at both services. Then Sunday afternoon, we gathered at church so that the presbytery could install me as the pastor of the church. We had elders and ministers representing churches from Beaver County and Butler County participate in the service. Dr. Tom Harmon, the pastor of Westminster United in Evans City, preached an inspirational sermon from Acts 16. Then our own elder, Tom McMeekin, the moderator of Beaver Butler Presbytery, led the installation portion of the service. I was moved by the musical preludes by Katie Olsen and Will Boyce, the stirring offertory by Jamie, the prayer of installation, the charge to the pastor and the congregation. Maybe the most amazing part was the moment where Tom McMeekin invited those in attendance to greet me. People lined up to shake my hands and congratulate me. Very quickly handshakes turned into hugs and for the next five minutes I joyously experienced the tangible love of the members and friends of the congregation. In a recent article by Rev. Dr. Thom S. Rainer, the president and CEO of Life- Way Christian Resources, he had an article listing the 10 Things Church Members Want from Their Pastors. The number one thing every church member wants from their pastor according to a recent survey that the article is based upon, is to know that their pastor loves them and cares about them. If I were to write a list of ten things that pastors want from their parishioners, I believe that the number one thing that pastors want is to know that they are loved by folks. This weekend I experienced the love of this congregation, and I hope you have experienced the love that I feel for the members and friends of the Mars United Presbyterian Church. I wrote in February that I had begun to develop a love for the congregation, and I can report that the sense of love that I feel has increased. Even though I might not always say the words to folks, please know that I am honored and humbled to be your pastor and I love each and every member and friend of the church. With Christ s Love for All, Pastor Ed

The Lord s Table This coming Sunday we will receive the Lord s Supper during worship. Presbyterian theology and polity (church law) allow Presbyterian Churches to celebrate the Lord s Supper in a number of different ways. In fact, we are to make sure that, The elements are distributed in the manner most suitable to the particular occasion. At different times during the year, the session has chosen to celebrate the Lord s Supper in various ways. When we gather to celebrate the Lord s Supper we can, gather about the Table to receive the bread and the cup; they may come to those serving to receive the elements; or those serving may distribute the elements to them where they are. We also have several ways that the Bread can be distributed. According to Presbyterian theology, the bread may be broken from that on the Table and placed in the people s hands; people may break off a portion from the broken loaf or other bread offered for distribution; or they may receive pieces of bread prepared for distribution. We even have several ways in which the cup may be shared. Every session has the option to allow the common cup to be offered to all who wish to partake of it; several cups may be offered and shared; or individual cups may be prepared for distribution. Rather than drink from a common cup, communicants may dip the broken bread into the cup. When people are invited to come forward to receive the Lord s Supper by taking a piece of bread and dipping it into the cup of grape juice, that practice is known as Intinction. Intinction is the communion practice of partly dipping the consecrated bread, into the consecrated wine before consumption by those receiving communion. For many people, receiving communion by Intinction gives them a special time to pray and reflect, either before receiving the bread and cup or after receiving the bread and the cup. In fact, many people after they return to their seats continue their time of prayer and reflection. It might be a kind and thoughtful thing to avoid speaking to those who have already received the bread and the cup and are seated just in case they are still in prayer. Whether we stay seated and have the bread and the cup passed to us or whether we come forward to receive the bread and the cup and then return to our seats, we are following Presbyterian theology and tradition that provides a wonderful amount of freedom to celebrate the Lord s Supper in ways appropriate to a particular congregation and occasion. May we all be a part of worship this Sunday as we remember the final meal of Jesus and his disciples.
