35 Years of Rotary Service They profit most who serve the best ROTARY CLUB OF NORTH SCOTT - BULLETIN Vol. 37 No. 12 www.northscottrotary.org e-mail NSRotary@aol.com October 7, 2009 FRIDAY AT THE STEEPLEGATE Partners of Scott County Watershed Project Amy Johannsen, Watershed Coordinator Amy Johannsen learned the importance of conservation at an early age through her mother. Amy grew up in Bettendorf, Iowa before attending the University of Iowa, graduating in 2007 with a Bachelors of Science Degree in Geography. During her last year at the University of Iowa, Johannsen worked with the Johnson County Soil and Water Conservation District and the University of Iowa Geography Department developing a Sediment Reduction Plan for the Deer Creek Watershed, a sub-watershed of America s third most polluted river, the Iowa River. Johannsen has worked for the Scott County Soil and Water Conservation District as Coordinator for Partners of Scott County Watersheds for the past two years. Partners of Scott County Watersheds is a grassroots based watershed group that works to improve water quality in Scott County and educate all citizens on ways they can be better stewards of our watersheds. What's being done to help watersheds in Scott County? The Partners of Scott County Watersheds have a number of conservation practices for farms, country and urban living. Landowners in Scott County can improve the watersheds by partnering with Partners of Scott County Watershed Project. Amy Johannsen, watershed coordinator, can work with you to evaluate your property and identify practices that can help your watershed and your property. Viner can also help find financial assistance to install those practices. Landowners participating in the watershed project can generally get improved financial assistance opportunities. The watershed project began in 2002, and a revamped effort by those involved with the watersheds in Scott County is now pushing to improve the watershed where flora and fauna live. Throughout the watersheds, a number of streambank stabilization structures and rain gardens are helping counter the water quality problems in Scott County. Streambank stabilization is a method to reduce erosion by using structures or planting vegetation along streambanks. Rain gardens were also planted to absorb water, reduce water flow, protect water quality and prevent flooding. Rain gardens are a shallow depression in the ground that is strategically located and planted with native wetland or prairie wildflowers and grasses. Those looking to become involved in Partners of Scott County Watersheds can also attend informational forums, held every other month and can attend educational forums held monthly.

Periodicals postage paid at Eldridge, IA 52748 POSTMASTER: Send address changes to NorScottarian, PO Box 52, Eldridge, IA 52748 LAST WEEK BRUCE BRALEY U.S. REPRESENTATIVE Bill Tubbs was able to recruit Democrat Bruce Braley to speak at Rotary on Friday, October 2, 2009. Eighty four members and guests were present to see what he had to say. He was accompanied by Pete DeKock, a former Rotary Youth Exchange student to Italy, who is now responsible for Mr. Braley s Davenport office. Mr. Braley said that he wished the House of Representatives would abide by the Four Way Test. He made the guests promise that no one would yell you lie at him, or hang a likeness of him outside the Steeplegate Inn. He conducted 17 town hall meetings in July and August and drew enormous crowds. Most members stayed to listen to see what Braley had to say, many until 1:15 or later. Dr. Brad Burt kept the questions flowing about health care issues and Medicare problems. Randy Zobrist thanked Braley for the stimulus package that River Bend Transit was part of receiving. They were able to replace several older vehicles. Braley also told how successful the Cash for Clunkers program was. Deryl Miller of the Quad Cities, IL club was present to promote Troop Jam 2009 to be held October 17 at the Capitol Theatre in Davenport. For ticket information, visit www.troopjam2009.org. Other Rotarians present were Thomas Coley, Bettendorf club, guest of Teresa Paper and Kevin Kraft, Bettendorf club, guest of Scott Kurtz. Other guests were Randy Moore, guest of Charlie Jones and Rev. Greyson Mhale from Tanzania, guest of Kim Wilkins. Tracey Kuehl was inducted as a new member. Becky Bray proposed her and Gary Lynch, past president, did the induction. She is the director of the Bettendorf Family Museum and resides near Princeton, IA. She was a former member of the Davenport Rotary Club in about 1988. October birthdays were celebrated and $21 was received for the educational fund. Jeff Helms also gave $200, as he received his last cash for clunkers payment from the government. John Maxwell was the sergeant and raised $38 in fines. Dr. Anita won the 50/50 drawing for the auction of $91. In excess of $2700 will be sent to Polio Plus in memory of Walter Fahrenkrog. This includes the money that the family received for polio eradication, the golf outing mulligans collected and the donations made directly to the club in Walter s memory. The 4 Way Test Of the things we THINK SAY or DO 1. Is it the TRUTH? 2. Is it FAIR to all concerned? 3. Will it build GOOD WILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? 4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
