Michael the Second Sunday of Advent December 09, 2018 Rev. Fr. Dale Branson, Pastor TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION For if this endeavor or this activity is of human origin, it will destroy itself. But if it comes from God, you will not be able to destroy it; you may even find yourselves fighting against God. Acts 5:38b-39b Parish Office Mailing and delivery address: 25394 N. Poseidon Rd. Weekend Mass Schedule Saturday: Adoration 9am (following 8:30am mass) Vigil 4pm Sunday: 8 am & 10:00 am Daily Mass Schedule Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday & Saturday - 8:30am at the Parish Center. Parish Center 26035 N Apollo Dr. San Tan Valley, AZ 85132 Look around most Catholic churches, and you will discover an image of John the Bap st, o en in the old bap stery, or in a window near where the font is or was located. He has two feast days in the calendar: one commemora ng his birth, and the other his death. There are only three na vi es in our calendar: for Jesus, for Mary, and for the Bap st. John s birthday is reckoned according to the schedule given in Luke s Gospel of the angel s announcement to Mary. The angel tells her that her cousin Elizabeth is in the sixth month of pregnancy, and so Mary hastens to help her. Reckoning Christmas as December 25, we count backwards nine months to March 25 for the Feast of the Annuncia on. Then we count forward three months to June 24 for John the Bap st s birth. Halfway to Christmas, his na vity gives ample reason for rejoicing in the summer, and his symbols of fire and water are used playfully in bonfires and dives into the sea. Even at the polar opposite of Christmas in the calendar, the energy of Christ s birth in the Incarna on provides cause for rejoicing. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. When John proclaimed a bap sm of repentance, as today s Gospel relates, he called people to a deep change of heart. For John the Bap st, repentance was not simply regret for past failings, but a commitment to orient life around God s desires and purposes. What might living in alignment with God s desires look like? Our readings offer some clues. Baruch indicates that when mercy and jus ce are embraced like a royal garment, we may see the fruits of repentance. Paul notes how the Holy Spirit has been ac ve within the church in Philippi, forming them to live in a loving and united community of faith, so they may witness to the love of God. And John himself suggests that a repentant heart clears a path for God to enter, leveling the mountains and valleys of our resistance, so that God might dwell within. HEIGHTS AND DEPTHS John the Bap st preached from the desert. The desert not far from Jerusalem is extremely rugged, where steep hills and deep valleys are common across a barren landscape. When John quoted Isaiah in today s Gospel, this rough terrain s rred the imagina on of John s listeners. John proclaimed that these hills and valleys are to be made level, to provide a smooth path for God to enter. John s listeners recognized that the height of hills and the depth of valleys are similar to human a tudes and rela onships: heights of personal pride and depths of discouragement and fear. Hills and valleys evoked how people treat each other, with some people raised high and others brought low. They suggested how social structures embody and harden these tendencies with large-scale systems of military, poli cal, or economic oppression. John proclaimed that God was about to alter this social landscape through the work of Jesus. EARTH-MOVING Transforming the human landscape, like the task of smoothing the desert hills and valleys, is an enormous undertaking, truly the work of God. Yet God looks for partners in this transforma on. John the Bap st, and Jesus a erward, called followers to par cipate in God s work, and to begin with repentance. We the Church respond to this call today, and acknowledge our ongoing need for God s mercy and forgiveness. Our Advent prepara on for Christmas includes opening our hearts to God s forgiveness, so that Jesus might come to take residence there. We join in God s earth-moving project by repen ng of how we block God s path with resentments and fears. When we are brought low in our lives, we seek God s help, and God will enlist the help of others. When we realize that we reside on mountains of advantage or privilege that place others in valleys, we are to repent and to change how we live. When we bring healing and jus ce to others, we are sharing in God s earth-shaking work, and preparing a straight pathway for our God. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. Colossians 3:15 Super Senior Savings -And let the peace of Christ control your hearts, the peace into which you were also called in one body. And be thankful. Peace From the coun ng team As head of the money counters, I was shocked and appalled when I read what was in the bulle n last week about the single dollar bills. I did not write that, I did not authorize that, and we counters have NEVER complained about too many singles being in the collec on basket. This item was submi ed to the bulle n for publishing by a non-counter, and should never have been printed. Please con nue to give as you normally do. God knows what is in your heart. Thank you, Andrea Longo Seniors who reach the age of 70 ½ may make Qualified Charitable Deductions (QCD) by directing charitable donations directly from their IRAs to charitable institutions on either a monthly, quarterly, semi-annual, or annual basis. This money is not taxable. This year s standard deduction for those over age 65 in 2018 is $26,600. More of us will be taking the standard deduction. If you take the standard deduction, the QCD saves you money in two ways. It is not taxed, nor is that sum added to the tax on your Social Security amount. My wife and I combine our weekly donations, Capital Campaign, Building Fund, Poor Collections, and Bishop s Appeal into one annual sum and then have a check sent quarterly to the parish. The Parish secretary applies the sum to each account as specified by the donor. This year WE WILL SAVE 22% OF THE AMOUNT DONATED! The choices are: Give the 22% to yourself, Share it with the parish, or Donate it to the IRS. (Only the first two will say Thank You ) QCD just requires a simple entry on the IRS 1040 form. One box asks for your total withdrawal amount from your IRA. On the dotted line simply write QCD and the dollar amount. Then fill in just the net taxable amount at the end of the line. If you have questions or would like more information on the QDC please contact: Tim Davidson @ tdavidson76@gmail.com. Bring a notebook, an open mind, and an open heart. Classes are Sundays a er 10am Mass and will run un l 12:30pm. Schedule: Dec 16 - The Made Series: The Church is Apostolic To register your teen for the 2018-2019 year, please contact Dillon @ (480)650-0549
