APRIL 2, 2017 ST. COLUMBANUS CHURCH_ #481/PAGE 4 PASTOR S NOTES Thanks to all who so generously responded to the Cardinal s Appeal at Mass. It would be wonderful if every family would contribute and therefore share in the knowledge that we all helped to reach our goal and maybe even exceed it. Remember, the money raised in the Appeal benefits the archdiocese and also our own parish by relieving most of the cost of running St. Columbanus School. This allows us to save money for necessary projects in the parish ( We will very soon need to replace the roof on the Martyrs Church). From this Sunday, traditionally called the 1st Sunday of the Passion, it is customary to veil images in churches. This is a fine old tradition. It has to do with deprivation of the senses and the liturgical dying of the Church (the Mystical Body of Christ) in preparation for the Lord s tomb and resurrection. The following information is taken from the 2015 Ordo for the Extraordinary Form of the Missale Romanum: The tradition of veiling statues during Passiontide comes from the Gospel of John, chapter 8 (now read during the Year A Sunday cycle), when the Jews picked up stones to throw at Jesus, but he mysteriously passes through the crowd unseen and hides. The veiling also reminds us that Christ s divinity was hidden at the time of His passion and death. The practice of covering statues comes from a custom of the ninth century when a large cloth was extended before the altar from the beginning of lent. This cloth called the Hungertuch (hunger cloth), hid the altar entirely from the faithful. During the reading of the Passion on Holy Wednesday at the words the veil of the temple was rent in two, the veil was parted, and the faithful again saw the altar. The cross remains covered until after the Good Friday liturgy at 3:00 p.m., while the statues and images are uncovered for the Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday night. So we see the great symbolism that our liturgy can and still does have. Even families may share in this practice by veiling statues in their homes. In Jesus and Mary, Fr. APRIL 2, 2017 ST. COLUMBANUS CHURCH #481/PAGE 5 25TH/50TH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY MASS On April 23rd at 10:00a.m., St. Columbanus Parish will celebrate Mass for couples married 25 or 50 years in 2017. The Rosary Altar Society will host a reception after Mass to allow everyone the opportunity to offer congratulations to these special couples! BIRTHRIGHT OF PEEKSKILL On Sunday, March 12, the teen group "2KLS" (To Know Love and Serve), led by Mrs Elsa Lekovic held a breakfast and baby shower to honor the mothers and babies of Birthright of Peekskill. The teens themselves raised the money for the breakfast, as well as donated over $500.00 to Birthright! In addition, someone collected more than $30.00 in pennies, and literally hundreds of baby items were collected - from diapers to onesies to snowsuits and more! Having the breakfast was such a lovely idea ~ kind of like what the volunteers of Birthright do for the women ~ welcome them with open arms. It was so good to see such a positive group of youth working, planning, giving, and praying together for the unborn. On behalf of the babies you have helped ~ Thank You!
