ADULT FAITH DEVELOPMENT Archaeology Series The Miniature Fresco Archaeology: An Introduction to the World s Greatest Sites A DVD series of lectures by Archaeologist and Professor Eric H. Cline of The George Washington University, produced by The Great Courses and National Geographic Thursday, October 12, 1:00 PM 2:15 PM Lesson 5. Discovering Mycenae and Knossos After Heinrich Schliemann excavated at the site of Hisarlik from 1870 to 1873 and announced to the world that he had found OLMC Book Club Meeting The OLMC Book Club resumes on Wednesday, October 11, 12:00 PM 1:30 PM in the Club Room of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Parish Hall. At our first meeting of this season, we will be discussing Small Great Things by Jodi Picoult. (Our September meeting was cancelled because of Hurricane Irma.) Bring a lunch. Beverages, cookies, and fruit will be provided. If you have not yet registered, please contact Doris R. Brodeur, dbrodeur@mit.edu, 941-966-0807 x 314. Dear Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parishioners, This Christmas season, OLMC will once again be offering fresh evergreens as a fundraising project. Please take a minute to look over the selections. Please note that all prices include shipping. There is a sample on display in the office. We are hopeful the wonderful scent and beautiful greenery will encourage you to support our fundraising efforts. All proceeds from our sale will directly benefit OLMC. Troy, he decided to go looking for Mycenaean sites, specifically, those related to Agamemnon, Menelaus, Odysseus, and others. In this lesson, we ll follow Schliemann as he attempted to find the grave of Agamemnon, before turning to Sir Arthur Evans and his excavation at Knossos. Lesson 6. Santorini, Akrotiri, and the Atlantis Myth Many archaeologists suspect that the kernel of truth underlying the myth of Atlantis is the volcanic eruption of the Greek island of Santorini in the middle of the 2 nd millennium B.C. The excavation of the site of Akrotiri on Santorini has shed important light on the Bronze Age Aegean at a time when the Minoans were engaged in contact and trade with such places as Egypt and Canaan in the Eastern Mediterranean. This series is fully enrolled. Only stand-by sea ng is available. Early Church History Fr. Fred Tillotson, O. Carm. Tuesdays, October 10, 17, 24 10:30 AM 12:00 PM Presents a historical look at the early church from its foundation to the Middle Ages. Divides the time periods into three slide-lecture sessions: October 10 The Apostolic Period and the Persecutions October 17 The Age of Constantine and the Great October 24 Heresies The Dark Ages into the Age of the Enlightenment Only a few seats left. Please contact Doris Brodeur, 941-966-0807x314m ti register. Our program will be offering evergreens to ship to your own home for decoration or to send a gift item across the country or across town. We appreciate your help with our sales drive. Order forms are available at the receptions desk. Our sale kicks off on October 14 and the last day to turn in orders is November 6. PASTORAL MINISTRY Get involved! Freely you have received, freely give! Matthew 10:8b How can someone become a Stephen Minister? Anyone interested in learning more about becoming a Stephen Minister should talk to Darwin Reeck. He will start training new Stephen Ministers soon. Once the training begins, all Stephen Ministers are asked to make a two-year commitment. How can someone receive care from a Stephen Minister? Darwin Reeck, our Stephen Leader, will coordinate all referrals. If you or someone you know could bene it from the care of a Stephen Minister, talk to Darwin and he will be happy to help you through the process. (If you want to talk about Stephen Ministry for someone else, please make sure to get his or her permission irst). What does the Stephen Ministry logo mean? The Stephen Ministry logo consists of a cross and circle together with a broken person and a whole person. The broken person behind the cross symbolizes the brokenness in our lives due to our sin and imperfections. The whole person stands in front of the cross because it is only through the cross of Jesus that we are made whole. The circle cymbolizes both the wholeness we receive through Christ and God s unending love for us. LIVING OUR FAITH EPIPHANY CATHEDRAL PERPETUAL ADORATION CHAPEL Nowhere does Jesus hear our prayers more readily than in the Blessed Sacrament. Bl. Henry Susa Epiphany Cathedral Perpetual Adoration Chapel will be opening this fall. The chapel will seat approximately 20 adorers and will be open 24/7. It is conveniently located across the parking lot from the Cathedral, near the Parish Office. Parishioners from neighboring parishes are invited to be a part of this important and much needed prayer time. To schedule a Holy Hour or to obtain more information please contact: Jenny Holaday, (941) 441-7495. The Prayer Shawl Ministry Next meeting Friday October 13, 2017 8:30-9:30am Everyone is welcome! Summer is over and our monthly meetings are starting up again. Thank you to those who were knitting over the summer! If you have not yet participated in our Shawl Ministry, please come and find out more about this rewarding ministry. These beautiful shawls are easy to make and greatly appreciated by the receiver. Work on them at home and at your pace. If you know of someone who is ill, home bound, having surgery, in a nursing home or assisted living, has lost a loved one recently, or anyone who could use a warm loving embrace, please let me know or inform someone at the reception desk. We will gladly give them a shawl. Questions? Call Tina O Leary 966-1826 Our mission is to provide, hope, comfort, joy and healing to those who most need a reminder of God s love for them through the work of our hands and the prayers in our hearts. The Diocese is once again sponsoring an ecumenical 40 Days for Life campaign this fall in Sarasota from September 27 to November 5. Our Lady of Mount Carmel will participate again this year in the Prayer Walk at Planned Parenthood in Sarasota. OLMC is scheduled at Planned Parenthood on Friday, November 3, from 9:00AM to 3:00 PM. Please volunteer and join us to pray for 1 hour or whatever time you can during that scheduled time. There will be a sign-up sheet and directions at the front desk. If you can go with another person that would be even better. Thank you for your prayers and participation to help save the lives of the unborn. For questions please call Jo Kilgallon at 966-0504. 40 Days for Life has become a highly effective movement that has grown tremendously since the first simultaneous national campaign 10 years ago, now involving over half a million people in 44 countries.
