PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE OFFERING. MUSICAL OFFERING Ayre in G Georg Telemann. *SONG OF THANKSGIVING Praise God from Whom All Blessings Flow Number 606

Transcription:

What did God do to help us? God chose the people of Israel to make a new beginning. They received God s covenant, and prepared the way for Jesus to come as our Savior. What is the covenant? The covenant is an everlasting agreement between God and Israel. What is in this agreement? When God called Abraham and Sarah, God promised to bless their family, which was later called Israel. Through the people of Israel, God vowed to bless all the peoples of the earth. God promised to be Israel s God, and they promised to be God s people. God vowed to love Israel and to be their hope forever, and Israel vowed to worship and serve only God. How did God keep this covenant? God led Israel out of slavery in Egypt, gave them the Ten Commandments through Moses, and brought them into the land that God had promised. Preparation for Worship We come to worship from a busy and noisy world. As we prepare to offer ourselves in praise and adoration of God, it is important that we step back from our preoccupations and focus our thoughts on God. We ask that you please turn off all cell phones and pagers. As the music begins this morning, please take time to become more aware of the continuing presence of God. Stand as you are able PRELUDE Le Banquet Céleste Olivier Messiaen (The Heavenly Banquet) Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood abide in me, and I in them. Gospel of John DOXOLOGY PLEASE STAND AS THE ORGAN INTRODUCTION BEGINS OLD HUNDREDTH Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise God, all creatures here below; Praise God above, ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. CALL to WORSHIP from Psalm 19 The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul; the decrees of the Lord are sure, making wise the simple; the precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the Lord is clear, enlightening the eyes; the ordinances of the Lord are true and righteous altogether. Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable to you, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer. HYMN 488 The God of Abraham Praise LEONI PRAYER of CONFESSION Merciful God, you pardon all who truly repent and turn to you. We humbly confess our sins and ask your mercy. We have not loved you with a pure heart, nor have we loved our neighbor as ourselves. We have not done justice, loved kindness, or walked humbly with you, our God. Have mercy on us, O God, in your loving kindness. In your great compassion, cleanse us from our sin. Create in us a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within us. Do not cast us from your presence, or take your Holy Spirit from us. Restore to us the joy of your salvation and sustain us with your bountiful Spirit. Amen.

SILENT PRAYER KYRIE ASSURANCE OF PARDON RESPONSE: Friends, believe the good news. In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. WORDS of WELCOME We ask that you sign the Friendship Pad and pass it to the person next to you in the pew. Please greet those worshipping with you at the close of the service. ANTHEM Draw Us in the Spirit s Tether Harold Friedell Draw us in the Spirit's tether; For when humbly, in Thy name, Two or three are met together, Thou art in the midst of them: Alleluya! Touch we now thy garment's hem. As the brethren used to gather In the name of Christ to sup, Then with thanks to our Creator Break the bread and bless the cup, Alleluya! So knit thou our friendship up. All our meals and all our living Make as sacraments of thee, That by caring, helping, giving, We may true disciples be, Alleluya! We will serve thee faithfully. SERMON To Be Presbyterian Is to Be Interfaith John Wilkinson HYMN 289 O God of Every Nation LLANGLOFFAN (10:45) (Children in kindergarten and older will come into worship to join their families during the singing of this hymn.) AFFIRMATION of FAITH Belonging to God: A First Catechism Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) Who are you? I am a child of God. What does it mean to be a child of God? That I belong to God, who loves me. What is a sacrament? A sacrament is a special act of Christian worship which uses visible signs to present God s grace for us in Jesus Christ. We believe that two sacraments were given by Jesus: baptism and the Lord s Supper. What is the Lord s Supper? In the Lord s Supper I am fed at the table of God s family. Through the bread that I eat and the cup that I drink, the Lord offers me his body and blood. He renews my faith, and gives me the gift of eternal life. As I remember that he died for all, and therefore also for me, I feed on him in my heart by faith with thanksgiving. Amen. PRESENTATION of OFFERINGS In addition to our regular Sunday morning offering, this morning we will receive the Peacemaking Offering; envelopes are in the bulletin. Loose offering or contributions placed in the orange envelopes will support the Pastors Emergency Fund. Please be generous as you are able. The Gathering of the servers. ANTHEM Here, O My Lord, I See Thee Barry Rose (8:30) Here, O my Lord, I see thee face to face, Here faith would touch and handle things unseen; Here grasp with firmer hand the eternal grace, And all my weariness upon thee lean. Here would I feed upon the bread of God, Here drink with thee the royal wine of heaven, Here would I lay aside each earthly load, Here taste afresh the calm of sin forgiven. I have no help but thine, nor do I need another arm save thine to lean upon; It is enough, my Lord, indeed, My strength is in thy might alone. Horatius Bonar

About Today s Organ Music Le Banquet Céleste, written by Olivier Messiaen in 1928, depicts a mystical vision of Holy Communion as a heavenly banquet. Messiaen was one of the most original of the 20 th century French organist-composers. A devout Roman Catholic, his compositions were frequently on religious, even mystical themes evoking images of heaven and creating the sense of a suspension of time. As postlude, Johann Sebastian Bach s prelude on the chorale, Wir glauben all an einen Gott presents a sturdy affirmation of our belief in one God. An Invitation to Give: Stewardship 2015 While stewardship is a year round conversation, the focused Third Church stewardship effort begins in October, culminating with Stewardship Sunday on November 16. Our theme, An Invitation to Give, connects with our Year of Invitation and reminds us that God invites us to share from what God has so abundantly shared with us. Over the course of the following Sundays, you will hear church members sharing their own experiences of responding to this invitation. Additionally, if you would like to attend an inhome stewardship conversation with John Wilkinson, please contact Beth Williams at the church office. Finally, members of the Stewardship Committee will be making a number of home visits to connect with a range of members for conversation. Please say yes if you are called. Invitation to Prayer Each Sunday the Chapel is open for prayer at 10:00am. Spend time in silent prayer, light a candle, or request intercessory prayer with one of the Deacons.
