June 2010 Following Our Father T R A N S F O R M I N G C U L T U R E B Y B E I N G T H E B O D Y O F C H R I S T New Castle First Church of God The Bible tells of a man named Zebedee, whose sons James and John were two of Jesus disciples (Matt 4: 18-22). Zebedee was a fisherman by trade and probably a very good one - he and his sons earned a living from their business. But more importantly, the gospel accounts show that he must have been a successful father. Sons often follow in the footsteps of their fathers. It s easy to imagine these two boys climbing aboard the sailboat with their dad as he taught them about the oars, sails and nets. He certainly shared all he knew about wind and storms and how to find a catch. Fishing requires tremendous patience, persistence, and determination - James and John would have observed these traits in their father as they worked alongside him. A father is the first authority figure in a child s life. Being a dad is an enormous responsibility, because children base their perception of God on what they observe in their earthly father. Zebedee spent a lot of time developing a strong relationship with his sons teaching them the lessons he had learned. He probably never realized that by preparing James and John to provide for themselves, he was really getting them ready for a great ministry. But his example and involvement with them built character qualities that enabled them to respond immediately when they heard Jesus call, Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men vs. 19-20). James and John followed Christ without reservation. And Zebedee watched them walk away, knowing that he might never see them again. Like successful Christian parents today, this father had raised his sons to be upright, self-confident young men. His reward was in witnessing them wisely step out from under his authority in order to serve the Son of God. Raising godly children takes wisdom, effort, and divine guidance. Zebedee didn t have a special knack or secret method for it; he just followed his own father faithfully. Happy Father s Day. Pastor Bill & Carole Ready... Set... What Makes A Dad... God took the strength of a mountain, The majesty of a tree, The warmth of a summer sun, The calm of a quiet sea, The generous soul of nature, The comforting arm of night, The wisdom of the ages, The power of the eagle s flight, The joy of a morning in spring, The faith of a mustard seed, The patience of eternity, The depth of a family need, Then God combined these qualities, When there was nothing more to add, He knew His masterpiece was complete, And so He called it... Preschool Year Review Thanks to the blessings of the Lord, and everyone s thoughts and prayers, Precious In His Sight s first school year is over. It was an amazing experience, that Stacy and I, as teachers, will never forget. We had a great group of children and families to work with. Hosted by Precious In His Sight Preschool During the month of May, the children finished learning the letters in the alphabet. We played lots of fun games and made lots of beautiful projects. Our last day of class, we did all of the children s favorite things to do in preschool. We made play-dough, played with shaving cream, played in water, we did some cooking, and made tie-dye t-shirts. Tuesday, May 25th was our Preschool End-of-the-Year Celebration. Our children wore their tie-dye shirts and walked down the main aisle of the sanctuary waving flags to the sound of Pomp and Circumstance. The children sang a couple songs and recited a couple poems. Then they received their certificates, and there was a beautiful slideshow. After the program, there were refreshments and Mother Goose Olympics for the kids. All of the people who attended this celebration were so touched and complimentary. Again, we would like to thank the church for this opportunity to reach out and touch our community through teaching precious children. Love, Stacy Gudyk & April Lewis Page 5
