God of the fertile fields, shaper of earth that yields our daily bread: forth from your bounteous hand come gifts your love has planned, that all in every land be clothed and fed. We would be stewards true, holding in trust from you all that you give; help us in love to share, teach us like you to care for people everywhere, that all may live. As grows the hidden seed to fruit that serves our need, so your reign grows. Let all our toil be used, no gift of yours abused, no humble task refused your love bestows. Preparation for Worship We come to worship from a busy and noisy world. As we prepare to offer ourselves in praise and adoration of God, it is important that we step back from our preoccupations and focus our thoughts on God. We ask that you please turn off all cell phones and pagers. As the music begins this morning, please take time to become more aware of the continuing presence of God. Stand as you are able PRELUDE Fanfare Percy Whitlock CHORAL INTROIT For the Fruit of All Creation AR HYD Y NOS (10:45) Text: Fred Pratt Green Junior Choir For the fruit of all creation, thanks be to God. For the gifts to every nation, thanks be to God. For the plowing, sowing, reaping, silent growth while we are sleeping, future needs in earth s safekeeping, thanks be to God. For the harvests of the Spirit, thanks be to God. For the good we all inherit, thanks be to God. For the wonders that astound us, for the truths that still confound us, most of all that love has found us, thanks be to God. DOXOLOGY PLEASE STAND AS THE ORGAN INTRODUCTION BEGINS OLD HUNDREDTH Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise God, all creatures here below; Praise God above, ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. CALL to WORSHIP from Psalm 65 You visit the earth and water it, O God, you greatly enrich it. You provide the people with grain, for so you have prepared it. You water its furrows abundantly, settling its ridges, softening it with showers, and blessing its growth. You crown the year with your bounty; your wagon tracks overflow with richness. The pastures of the wilderness overflow, the hills gird themselves with joy, the meadows clothe themselves with flocks, the valleys deck themselves with grain, they shout and sing together for joy. HYMN 367 Come, Ye Thankful People Come ST. GEORGE S WINDSOR

PRAYER of CONFESSION SILENT PRAYER KYRIE Eternal God, our judge and redeemer, we confess that we have tried to hide from you, for we have done wrong. We have lived for ourselves, and apart from you. We have turned from our neighbors, and refused to bear the burdens of others. We have ignored the pain of the world, and passed by the hungry, the poor, and the oppressed. In your great mercy forgive our sins and free us from selfishness, that we may choose your will and obey your commandments; through Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen. ASSURANCE OF PARDON RESPONSE: Friends, believe the good news. In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. ANTHEM A Grateful Heart David Gambrell (10:45) Junior Choir and Glorious Things A grateful heart is what I bring, a song of praise, my offering. Among the saints I lift my voice: in you, O God, I will rejoice. Your name is known in all the lands. You feed the poor with gentle hands. Your word is true, your works are just; in you, O God, the faithful trust. With saving love you set us free, and still you dwell in mystery with wisdom none can comprehend. Your praise, O God, will never end.

CHILDREN S MESSAGE (10:45) SACRAMENT of BAPTISM (10:45) PRESENTATION THE ACT OF BAPTIZING WELCOME ELDER: BAPTISMAL RESPONSE AND DISMISSAL OF CHILDREN Jacob Michael White Jacob is now received into the holy catholic church. Through baptism God has made him a member of the household of faith, to share with us in the priesthood of Christ. We, the members of this congregation, have promised to nurture and to love this child, and to assist him to be a faithful disciple. With joy and thanksgiving, we welcome you into Christ s church, for we are all one in Christ. We promise to love, encourage and support you, to share the good news of the gospel with you and to help you to know and follow Christ. (Children, age 3 through sixth grade, may depart for church school and child care following the children s message. You may exit through the doors to the left of the pulpit to get to the Education Building.) (10:45) The third grade class will be at the Children s worship table today. GOSPEL LESSON Luke 8:4-8, 11-15 (Pew Bible, NT page 67) The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

ANTHEM Christ Has No Body But Our Own Aaron David Miller Sarah Cohen, sign interpreter Christ has no body but our own, No hands, no feet on earth but our own, Christ has no body but our own. Ours are the eyes with which he looks with compassion on this world. Ours are the feet with which he walks to do good. Ours are the hands with which he blesses all the world. Christ has no body but our own. Amen. - adapted from Teresa of Ávila (1515-1582) SERMON We Shall Come Rejoicing John Wilkinson

HYMN 250 In the Bulb There is a Flower PROMISE 716 God, Whose Giving Knows No Ending BEACH SPRING (During the singing of the hymns, you are invited to bring your pledge cards forward. Pledge cards are available in the Chapel pew pads or pew racks in the Sanctuary.) AFFIRMATION of FAITH Brief Statement of Faith, Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) We trust in God the Holy Spirit, everywhere the giver and renewer of life. The Spirit justifies us by grace through faith, sets us free to accept ourselves and to love God and neighbor, and binds us together with all believers in the one body of Christ, the church. The same Spirit who inspired the prophets and apostles rules our faith and life in Christ through Scripture, engages us through the Word proclaimed, claims us in the waters of baptism, feeds us with the bread of life and the cup of salvation, and calls women and men to all ministries of the church. In a broken and fearful world the Spirit gives us courage to pray without ceasing, to witness among all peoples to Christ as Lord and Savior, to unmask idolatries in church and culture, to hear the voices of peoples long silenced, and to work with others for justice, freedom, and peace. In gratitude to God, empowered by the Spirit, we strive to serve Christ in our daily tasks and to live holy and joyful lives, even as we watch for God's new heaven and new earth, praying, Come, Lord Jesus! Amen. PRAYERS of the PEOPLE (Prayer Request cards are available in pew pockets and can be placed and THE LORD S PRAYER PRESENTATION of OFFERINGS in the offering plate.) Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

We thank you for evidences of growth all around us, and for the seeds of faith you nurture in each of us. Allow us to rejoice in your grace and share your good news with all the world. We pray in Jesus name. Amen.
