FULL TEXT Worship Celebration: July 1, 2018 9:15 a.m. (CONTEMPORARY) EPWORTH: a United Methodist Church 6 th Sunday after Pentecost (Year B) Welcome to Epworth. Today we welcome our new Associate Pastor, Rev. Todd Shultz, to deliver the message from 1 John. This book was most likely written by an elder in the early church that the apostle John had established. Perfect love was a key focus in this church and a way for the congregation to abide in God. It was the engine to keep the church thriving in ministry in a time of great persecution to Christians. Epworth has a rich tradition of leading with the heart and love. We need to continue that tradition as God stretches us into a plan that God has for us in the future. Thank you for choosing to worship with us at Epworth Church, where all are welcome and together we explore faith and embrace community. EPWORTH a United Methodist Church 19285 Holland Glade Road Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971 (302) 227-7743 www.eumcrb.org VISION: Exploring Faith, Embracing Community MISSION: Inviting All, Finding Your Place, Connecting to God, Demonstrating Care WE GATHER IN COMMUNITY Praise Gathering PATRIOTIC SING-ALONG My Country Tis of Thee UMH 697 My country tis of thee, sweet land of liberty, of thee I sing; Land where my fathers died, land of the pilgrims pride. From ev ry mountainside, let freedom ring! Our fathers God to thee, author of liberty, to thee we sing; Long may our land be bright with freedom s holy light; Protect us by thy might, great God, our King. America the Beautiful UMH 696 O beautiful for spacious skies, for amber waves of grain. For purple mountain majesties above the fruited plain! America! America! God shed his grace on thee, And crown thy good with brotherhood from sea to shining sea. O beautiful for heroes proved in liberating strife, Who more than self their country loved, and mercy more than life! America! America! God shed his grace on thee, And crown thy good with brotherhood from sea to shining sea.

Battle Hymn of the Republic UMH 717 Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord; He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored; He hath loosed the fateful lightning of His terrible swift sword; His truth is marching on! REFRAIN: Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! His truth is marching on! In the beauty of the lilies Christ was born across the sea, With a glory in His bosom that transfigures you and me; As He died to make us holy, let us die so we are free! Our God is marching on! {REFRAIN} God Bless America Irving Berlin God bless America! Land that I love. Stand beside her, and guide her, through the night with a light from above. From the mountains, to the prairies, to the oceans white with foam, God bless America! My home sweet home! God bless America! My home sweet home! Let There Be Peace on Earth UMH 431 Let there be peace on earth, and let it begin with me; let there be peace on earth, the peace that was meant to be. With God our creator, children all are we. Let us walk with each other in perfect harmony. Let peace begin with me; let this be the moment now. With ev ry step I take, let this be my solemn vow; to take each moment and live each moment in peace eternally. Let there be peace on earth, and let it begin with me. Greeting, Sharing the Mission & Ministry of Epworth *Passing the Peace *Singing in Praise MY LIGHTHOUSE In my wrestling, and in my doubts, in my failures, You won t walk out. Your great love will lead me through; You are the peace in my troubled sea. Whoa, oh, You are the peace in my troubled sea. In the silence, You won t let go. In the questions, Your truth will hold. Your great love will lead me through; You are the peace in my troubled sea. Whoa, oh, You are the peace in my troubled sea. My Lighthouse, my Lighthouse shining in the darkness, I will follow You! Oh My Lighthouse, my Lighthouse, I will trust the promise: You will carry me safe to shore, safe to shore, safe to shore, safe to shore. I won t fear what tomorrow brings. With each morning, I ll rise and sing. My God s love will lead me through; You are the peace in my troubled sea. Whoa, oh, You are the peace in my troubled sea. Chorus} Bridge: Fire before us, You re the brightest. You will lead us through the storms. (Repeat 4X Chorus) 1

Children s Celebration Joys & Concerns WE PREPARE FOR THE WORD Mickie McManamon Prayer of Confession We have not kept faith with you, righteous God. There are so many distractions that occupy our time! There are so many groups to claim our loyalty. There are so many activities that bid for our attention. Even the church involves us in busyness that keeps us from matters of greater importance. In these moments, we seek to know you and to be known by you, that in an honest exchange our relationship with you and with the people around us might be strengthened. In your name, and joining with you, we seek justice for the oppressed, food for the hungry, and healing for all. Amen. Words of Assurance We can count on God s active presence when all other hope is gone. Let us respond in gratitude to the One who deals kindly with us and whose will for us is love and joy and peace. Happy are those whose help and whose hope is in the one true God, who reigns for all generations and beyond time. HOW DEEP THE FATHER S LOVE FOR US How deep the Father's love for us, how vast beyond all measure; That He should give His only Son to make a wretch His treasure. How great the pain of searing loss, the Father turns His face away; As wounds which mar the Chosen One, bring many sons to glory. Behold the Man upon a cross, my sin upon His shoulders; Ashamed, I hear my mocking voice call out among the scoffers. It was my sin that held Him there until it was accomplished; His dying breath has brought me life- I know that it is finished. We Engage the Word New Testament Lesson I John 4:7-21 Murray Archibald Beloved, let us love one another, because love is from God; everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, for God is love. God s love was revealed among us in this way: God sent his only Son into the world so that we might live through him. In this is love, not that we loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Beloved, since God loved us so much, we also ought to love one another. No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God lives in us, and his love is perfected in us. By this we know that we abide in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit. And we have seen and do testify that the Father has sent his Son as the Savior of the world. God abides in those who confess that Jesus is the Son of God, and they abide in God.

So we have known and believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and those who abide in love abide in God, and God abides in them. Love has been perfected among us in this: that we may have boldness on the Day of Judgment, because as he is, so are we in this world. There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear; for fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not reached perfection in love. We love because he first loved us. Those who say, I love God, and hate their brothers or sisters, are liars; for those who do not love a brother or sister whom they have seen, cannot love God whom they have not seen. The commandment we have from him is this: those who love God must love their brothers and sisters also. Brothers and Sisters, This is the Word of God for the People of God. HOW DEEP THE FATHER S LOVE FOR US (CONT) I will not boast in anything, no gifts, no power, no wisdom; But I will boast in Jesus Christ, His death and resurrection. Why should I gain from His reward? I cannot give an answer. But this I know with all my heart: His wounds have paid my ransom. Why should I gain from His reward? I cannot give an answer. But this I know with all my heart: His wounds have paid my ransom. But this I know with all my heart: His wounds have paid my ransom. 2 Thanks be to God Sermon Perfect Love Rev. Todd Shultz Sermon Response I CAN ONLY IMAGINE I can only imagine what it will be like when I walk by Your side. I can only imagine what my eyes will see when Your face is before me. I can only imagine. Surrounded by Your glory, what will my heart feel? Will I dance for You, Jesus, or in awe of You be still? Will I stand in Your presence, or to my knees will I fall? Will I sing Hallelujah? Will I be able to speak at all? I can only imagine. I can only imagine. I can only imagine when that day comes and I find myself standing in the Son. I can only imagine when all I will do is forever, forever worship You. I can only imagine. (refrain 2x) I can only imagine. I can only imagine. I can only imagine. I can only imagine. I can only imagine. Tag: I can only imagine when all I will do is forever, forever worship You. THE GOSPEL A restless generation, we re turning over ev ry stone, hoping to find salvation in a world that s left us cold.

Can we get back to the altar, back to the arms of our first love? There s only one way to the Father, and He s calling out to us. To the captive it looks like freedom, to the orphan it feels like home. To the skeptic it might sound crazy to believe in a God who loves. In a world where our hearts are breaking, and we re lost in the mess we ve made, like a blinding light in the dead of night, it s the Gospel, the Gospel that makes a way. It s the Gospel that makes a way. It s the cure for our condition, it s the Good News for us all. It s greater than religion, it s the power of the cross. So, can we get back to the altar, back to the arms of our first love? There s only one way to the Father, and He s calling out to us. {Chorus} It s the Gospel that makes a way. In my own life it means forgiveness when I know I deserve the fall. It called me out of my darkness and carried me to the cross. In a moment my eyes were opened, in that moment my heart was changed. Like a blinding light in the dead of night, it s the Gospel. {Chorus} TAG: It s the Gospel that makes a way. Oh, oh, it s the Gospel that makes a way. It s the Gospel, the Gospel that makes a way. 4 WE RESPOND TO THE WORD *The Great Thanksgiving Prayer The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. with sung responses as in FWS 2257b,c,d It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Almighty God, creator of heaven and earth. You formed us in your image and breathed into us the breath of life. When we turned away, and our love failed, your love remained steadfast. You delivered us from captivity, made covenant to be our sovereign God, and spoke to us through your prophets. And so, with your people on earth and all the company of heaven we praise your name and join their unending hymn: Holy, holy, holy Lord; God of power and might. FWS 2257b Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest! Hosanna in the highest! Hosanna in the highest! Blest is the One who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest! Hosanna in the highest! Hosanna in the highest! (Please be seated) Todd

Holy are you, and blessed is your Son Jesus Christ. Your Spirit anointed him to preach good news to the poor, To proclaim release to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, To set at liberty those who are oppressed, and to announce that the time had come When you would save your people. He healed the sick, fed the hungry, and ate with sinners. By the baptism of his suffering, death, and resurrection you gave birth to your Church, delivered us from slavery to sin and death, and made with us a new covenant by water and the Spirit. When the Lord Jesus ascended, he promised to be with us always, in the power of your Word and Holy Spirit. On the night in which he gave himself up for us, he took bread, gave thanks to you, broke the bread, gave it to his disciples, and said: "Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you.do this in remembrance of me." When the supper was over he took the cup, gave thanks to you, gave it to his disciples, and said: "Drink from this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me." And so, in remembrance of these your mighty acts in Jesus Christ, we offer ourselves in praise and thanksgiving as a holy and living sacrifice, in union with Christ's offering for us, as we proclaim the mystery of faith. Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again. FWS 2257c Hosanna in the highest! Hosanna in the highest! Hosanna in the highest! Pour out your Holy Spirit on us gathered here, Todd and on these gifts of bread and wine. Make them be for us the body and blood of Christ, that we may be for the world the body of Christ, redeemed by his blood. By your Spirit make us one with Christ, one with each other, and one in ministry to all the world, until Christ comes in final victory, and we feast at his heavenly banquet. Through your Son Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit in your holy Church, all honor and glory is yours, almighty God, now and forever. Amen. Amen. Amen. FWS 2257d Hosanna in the highest! Hosanna in the highest! Hosanna in the highest! The Lord s Prayer UMH 895 Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

We Are Sent into the World Music during Communion Terry Rasberry, guitar AT THE CROSS (LOVE RAN RED) There s a place where mercy reigns and never dies. There s a place where streams of grace flow deep and wide, where all the love I ve ever found comes like a flood, comes flowing down. At the cross, at the cross I surrender my life. I m in awe of You, I m in awe of You. Where Your love ran red and my sin washed white, I owe all to You, I owe all to You, Jesus. There s a place where sin and shame are powerless, where my heart has peace with God and forgiveness, where all the love I ve ever felt comes like a flood, comes flowing down. At the cross, at the cross I surrender my life. I m in awe of You, I m in awe of You. Where Your love ran red and my sin washed white, I owe all to You, I owe all to You. Here my hope is found, here on holy ground. Here I bow down, here I bow down. Here, arms open wide, here You saved my life. Here I bow down, here I bow. At the cross, at the cross I surrender my life. I m in awe of You, I m in awe of You. Where Your love ran red and my sin washed white, I owe all to You, I owe all to You, I owe all to You, I owe all to You, Jesus. Savior of the world. Jesus, Savior of the world. Jesus, Savior of the world. Jesus. 5 *Benediction *Sending Song ALL THE PEOPLE SAID AMEN You are not alone if you are lonely. When you feel afraid, you're not the only. We are all the same, in need of mercy, to be forgiven and be free. It's all you get to lean on, but thank God, it's all you need. And all the people said Amen. Whoa. And all the people said Amen. Give thanks to the Lord, for His love never ends. And all the people said Amen. If you're rich or poor, well, it don't matter. Weak or strong, you know love is what we're after. We're all broken, but we're all in this together. God knows we stumble and fall, And He so loved the world, He sent his son to save us all. {Refrain} Todd Blessed are the poor in spirit who are torn apart. Blessed are the persecuted and the pure in heart. Blessed are the people hungry for another start, For theirs is the kingdom, the kingdom of God. {Refrain 2x} TAG: Yeah! And all the people said Amen. 6 *Please stand as you are able.
