Preparation for Worship As you enter the Sanctuary, please prepare your heart for worship and silence your mobile devices. The Church has always practiced some manner of corporate profession of faith. In the Old Testament, worshipers recited the Shema, Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one (Deut. 6:4-9; 11:13-21). Likewise, in the New Testament there are examples of possible early creeds (Col. 1:15-20 and Phil. 2:1-12). As we come to the Lord s Table at the 8:15 communion service this morning, we will be reading The Apostles Creed, which declares the most basic and unalterable facts about the Christian faith and can be confessed by every Christian. There are many reasons it is good to state our faith corporately. First, we are one family in this struggle called the Christian life and one army in this battle against the world, the flesh, and the devil. We declare our faith to Christ our Commander in the presence of His cosmic enemies. As we say the Creed, let us imagine standing shoulder to shoulder as soldiers in a line of defense against hell s strongholds. Second, we use this and other creeds as encouragement, for they summarize God s great plan for saving sinners like us. Therefore, as we join together for worship and profess the Creed corporately, let us do so boldly and joyfully. For in Christ s victory over the grave, all of His and our enemies are conquered, and we are saved! The Liturgy of the Word ORGAN PRELUDE: Emperor s Fanfare.... Antonio Soler Samuel Metzger, organ INSTRUMENTAL PRELUDE: Steal Away.... Hal Hopson Dee Walker, flute A WORD ON WORSHIP....George W. Robertson CHORAL INTROIT: Praise His Glorious Name... Robert Liddon Sing, O Daughter of Zion. Shout aloud, O Israel. Be glad and rejoice with all of your heart, O Daughter of Jerusalem. The Lord your God is with you. He is mighty to save. He is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you. He ll quiet you with his love. He rejoices over you with singing. Sing, O Daughter of Zion. Shout aloud, O Israel. The Lord your God is with you. He is mighty. He is mighty to save. Sing, ye chosen of Israel. Shout aloud, your voices raise. Give glory to God in the name of His Son, ye ransomed of Jerusalem. God sent His Son to save you from the curse of the grave. Jesus Christ came to save. For He laid down His life for you, redeemed you by His blood, From your sin and guilt and shame He freed you, Sing, O child of His kingdom. Shout aloud, give Jesus praise. He reigns and intercedes for you. Hallelujah! Praise His glorious name! The Westminster Singers Christy Young, director CALL TO WORSHIP....D. Todd Erickson WHYMN OF PRAISE: Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee... HYMN TO JOY Our children s choirs are learning this hymn this month. Joyful, joyful, we adore Thee, God of glory, Lord of love; Hearts unfold like flowers before Thee, opening to the sun above. Melt the clouds of sin and sadness, drive the dark of doubt away; Giver of immortal gladness, fill us with the light of day. All Thy works with joy surround Thee, earth and heav n reflect Thy rays, Stars and angels sing around Thee, center of unbroken praise. Field and forest, vale and mountain, flowery meadow, flashing sea, Chanting bird and flowing fountain, call us to rejoice in Thee.

Thou art giving and forgiving, ever blessing, ever blest, Wellspring of the joy of living, ocean depth of happy rest! Thou our Father, Christ, our Brother all who live in love are Thine; Teach us how to love each other, lift us to the joy divine. Mortals, join the happy chorus which the morning stars began Father love is reigning o er us, brother love binds man to man. Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Joyful music leads us sunward in the triumph song of life. WINVOCATION (Please lift hands) WOLD TESTAMENT LESSON: I Chronicles 16:5-31, 34-36... Amanda Coop For great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised, and he is to be feared above all gods. For all the gods of the peoples are worthless idols, but the Lord made the heavens. Splendor and majesty are before him; strength and joy are in his place. Ascribe to the Lord, O families of the peoples, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength! Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name; bring an offering and come before him! Worship the Lord in the splendor of holiness; tremble before him, all the earth; yes, the world is established; it shall never be moved. Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice, and let them say among the nations, The Lord reigns! Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures forever! Say also: Save us, O God of our salvation, and gather and deliver us from among the nations, that we may give thanks to your holy name and glory in your praise. Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, from everlasting to everlasting! Then all the people said, Amen! and praised the Lord. WDOXOLOGY.... TALLIS CANON Praise God from Whom all blessings flow; Praise Him, all creatures here below; Praise Him above, ye heav nly host: Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. WORSHIP OF GOD WITH THE GIFTS OF GOD....Gerry A. Peak OFFERTORY ANTHEM Christus Paradox...................... arr. Alfred V. Fedak You, Lord, are both Lamb and Shepherd. You, Lord, are both prince and slave. You, peacemaker and swordbringer of the way you took and gave. You the everlasting instant; You, whom we both scorn and crave. Clothed in light upon the mountain, stripped of might upon the cross, Shining in eternal glory, beggar d by a soldier s toss, You, the everlasting instant; You, who are both gift and cost. You, who walk each day beside us, sit in power at God s side. You, who preach a way that s narrow, have a love that reaches wide. You, the everlasting instant; You, who are our pilgrim guide. Worthy is our earthly Jesus! Worthy is our cosmic Christ! Worthy your defeat and vict ry. Worthy still your peace and strife. You, the everlasting instant; You, who are our death and life. Alleluia, You, who are our death and our life.

WGREETINGS A WORD TO THE CHILDREN WPRAYERS OF INTERCESSION WHYMN OF PREPARATION: No. 274 Thine Be the Glory... MACCABAEUS NEW TESTAMENT LESSON... Acts 9:32-43 (page 918 in the pew Bible) All flesh is grass, and all its beauty is like the flower of the field; The grass withers, the flower fades, but the Word of our God will stand forever. Amen. (Isaiah 40:6b, 8) SERMON An Attractive Savior, Part 1 George W. Robertson The Liturgy of the Table WINVITATION TO THE TABLE All those who have publicly professed their faith and joined a Christian church as a communing member are warmly welcomed to receive communion today. Non-communing worshipers are encouraged to contemplate the love of Jesus Christ during this time and pass by the elements. At Second Presbyterian, we encourage our children not to take communion until they have joined the church as communicant members. We do, however, encourage non-communing children to come forward with their parents to receive a blessing. Those wishing to be served communion together as a group or family, please stand together in front of the two serving elders before taking the elements. All communion wafers are gluten free. WPROFESSION OF OUR FAITH... The Apostles Creed I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord; Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead and buried; He descended into hell; The third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead; I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen. WGLORIA PATRI.... GREATOREX Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, World without end. Amen, Amen!

CORPORATE PRAYER OF CONFESSION Heavenly Father, we humbly confess that we are an anxious and fearful people. We do not trust You as we should, and we often try to control our circumstances to prevent hardships and pain. We are slow to seek You in prayer, weak in our perseverance, and quick to forget Your faithfulness to us, Your power, and Your all-sufficient grace. Forgive us for the folly of our self-trust. Forgive us for seeking our self-preservation rather than Your glory. Forgive us for doubting Your goodness, Your strength, and Your salvation. Renew our minds and hearts that we might walk by faith and not by sight. By Your mercy, keep us wholly devoted to Christ and cause us to endure to the end, that we might receive Your great salvation. Through Jesus Christ we pray. INDIVIDUAL PRAYERS OF CONFESSION ASSURANCE OF DIVINE PARDON....Ephesians 1:7-8 In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace, which he lavished upon us, in all wisdom and insight. WORDS OF INSTITUTION PRAYER OF CONSECRATION AND THE LORD S PRAYER Our Father, Who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy Kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For Thine is the Kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. SHARING THE BREAD AND THE CUP For those unable to come forward for communion, please raise your hand and an elder will serve you in your seat. Throughout this time of communion, we invite you to join in singing the hymns printed in bold below. Jesus, Lover of My Soul... ABERYSTWYTH Jesus, lover of my soul, let me to Thy bosom fly, While the nearer waters roll, while the tempest still is high: Hide me, O my Savior, hide, till the storm of life is past; Safe into the haven guide, O receive my soul at last! Other refuge have I none, hangs my helpless soul on Thee; Leave, ah! leave me not alone, still support and comfort me! All my trust on Thee is stayed, all my help from Thee I bring; Cover my defenseless head with the shadow of Thy wing. Thou, O Christ, art all I want; more than all in Thee I find: Raise the fallen, cheer the faint, heal the sick, and lead the blind. Just and holy is Thy name; I am all unrighteousness; False and full of sin I am, Thou art full of truth and grace. Plenteous grace with Thee is found, grace to cover all my sin; Let the healing streams abound; make and keep me pure within: Thou of life the fountain art, freely let me take of Thee; Spring Thou up within my heart, rise to all eternity.

There Is a Fountain Filled with Blood....FOUNTAIN There is a fountain filled with blood, drawn from Immanuel s veins; And sinners, plunged beneath that flood, lose all their guilty stains: Lose all their guilty stains, lose all their guilty stains; And sinners, plunged beneath that flood, lose all their guilty stains. The dying thief rejoiced to see that fountain in his day; And there have I, as vile as he, washed all my sins away: Washed all my sins away, washed all my sins away; And there have I, as vile as he, washed all my sins away. E er since by faith I saw the stream your flowing wounds supply, Redeeming love has been my theme, and shall be till I die: And shall be till I die, and shall be till I die; Redeeming love has been my theme, and shall be till I die. Dear dying Lamb, Your precious blood shall never lose its pow r, Till all the ransomed church of God be saved to sin no more: Be saved to sin no more, be saved to sin no more; Till all the ransomed church of God be saved to sin no more. Jesus Paid It All.... ALL TO CHRIST I hear the Savior say, Your strength indeed is small; Child of weakness, watch and pray, find in Me your all in all. Jesus paid it all, all to Him I owe; Sin had left a crimson stain, He washed it white as snow. Lord, now indeed I find Your power, and yours alone, Can change the leper s spots, and melt the heart of stone. For nothing good have I whereby Your grace to claim I ll wash my garments white in the blood of Calv ry s Lamb. And when, before the throne, I stand in Him complete, Jesus died my soul to save, my lips shall still repeat. My Jesus, I Love Thee.... CARITAS My Jesus, I love Thee, I know Thou art mine; For Thee all the follies of sin I resign. My gracious Redeemer, my Savior art Thou; I love Thee because Thou hast first loved me, And purchased my pardon on Calvary s tree. I love Thee for wearing the thorns on Thy brow; I ll love Thee in life, I will love Thee in death; And praise Thee as long as Thou lendest me breath; And say, when the death-dew lies cold on my brow: In mansions of glory and endless delight, I ll ever adore Thee in heaven so bright; I ll sing with the glittering crown on my brow: PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING WCONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE...REGENT SQUARE We acclaim your life, O Jesus, now we sing your victory; Sin or hell may seek to seize us, but your conquest keeps us free. Stand in triumph, stand in triumph, worship Christ, the risen King! WBENEDICTION (Please lift hands) WCONGREGATIONAL THREE-FOLD AMEN ORGAN POSTLUDE: Carillon de Longpont...
