FIRST LESSON Zephaniah 3:14-17 14 Sing, Daughter Zion; shout aloud, Israel! Be glad and rejoice with all your heart, Daughter Jerusalem! 15 The Lord has taken away your punishment, he has turned back your enemy. The Lord, the King of Israel, is with you; never again will you fear any harm. 16 On that day they will say to Jerusalem, Do not fear, Zion; do not let your hands hang limp. 17 The Lord your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you; in his love he will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing. PSALM Psalm 14 M: Out of the depths I cry to you, Lord; Lord, hear my voice. C: Let your ears be attentive to my cry for mercy. M: If you, Lord, kept a record of sins, Lord, who could stand? C: But with you there is forgiveness, so that we can, with reverence, serve you. M: I wait for the Lord, my whole being waits, C: and in his word I put my hope. M: I wait for the Lord more than watchmen wait for the morning, C: more than watchmen wait for the morning. M: Israel, put your hope in the Lord, for with the Lord is unfailing love and with him is full redemption. C: He himself will redeem Israel from all their sins. 6
SECOND LESSON Philippians 4:4-7 4 Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! 5 Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. 6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. VERSE OF THE DAY Matthew 11:10 Alleluia. I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you. Alleluia. GOSPEL Luke 3:7-18 7 John said to the crowds coming out to be baptized by him, You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? 8 Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. And do not begin to say to yourselves, We have Abraham as our father. For I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham. 9 The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire. 7
10 What should we do then? the crowd asked. 11 John answered, Anyone who has two shirts should share with the one who has none, and anyone who has food should do the same. 12 Even tax collectors came to be baptized. Teacher, they asked, what should we do? 13 Don t collect any more than you are required to, he told them. 14 Then some soldiers asked him, And what should we do? He replied, Don t extort money and don t accuse people falsely be content with your pay. 15 The people were waiting expectantly and were all wondering in their hearts if John might possibly be the Messiah. 16 John answered them all, I baptize you with water. But one who is more powerful than I will come, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. 17 His winnowing fork is in his hand to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his barn, but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire. 18 And with many other words John exhorted the people and proclaimed the good news to them. M: This is the Gospel of our Lord. C: Praise be to you, O Christ! 8
HYMN OF THE DAY When Sinners See their Lost Condition 9
SERMON Fives Steps for Repentance Luke 3:7-18 Cinco pasos para el arrepentimiento Lucas 3:7-18 NICENE CREED I believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. I believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary, and became fully human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church. I acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. 10
PRAYER OF THE CHURCH The pastor leads the congregation in the prayer of the church. OFFERING The members of Cristo Rey work together to support the work of the Lord in their community and around the world. Visitors should not feel obligated to participate. THE PREFACE M: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. M: Lift up your hearts. C: We lift them up to the Lord. M: Let us give thanks to the Lord, our God. C: It is good and right so to do. M: It is truly good and right that we should at all times and in all places, give thanks to you, Holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord who comes with his Father to make his home in human hearts, working repentance and faith by his Spirit until he comes again. Therefore, with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify your glorious name, evermore praising you and saying: HOLY, HOLY, HOLY 11
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen. WORDS OF INSTITUION M: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night he was betrayed, took bread; and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take and eat; this is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me. 12
Then he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink from it, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for you for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me. The peace of the Lord be with you always. C: Amen. LAMB OF GOD DISTRIBUTION OF HOLY COMMUNION God s Word teaches we should examine and prepare ourselves before receiving communion. It also teaches that communion is an expression of our unity in the faith. Therefore, we ask guests who are not members of our church or one of our affiliated churches to meet with our pastor before receiving communion the first time. 13
SONG OF THANKSGIVING PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING M: We give thanks to you, almighty God, that you have refreshed us through this sacrament, and we implore you that of your mercy you would strengthen us through the same in faith toward you and in fervent love toward one another; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen. BLESSING M: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look on you with favor and give you peace. C: Amen. 14
