Good morning, and welcome to worship and Christian fellowship. Large print bulletins are available and children s bulletins are available on the table in the Narthex. A nursery is available for infants up to 5 years of age.

Those who are able are invited to stand. PRELUDE In The Garden Wilson/Miles LIFE OF THE CONGREGATION Moment of silence to prepare your hearts for worship SONG OF DEVOTION (hymnal & screen) (please remain seated) #184 Thy Word (vs. 1) LET US WORSHIP GOD TOGETHER CALL TO WORSHIP (Psalm 145:1-5) Leader: I will exalt You, my God the King; I will praise Your Name for ever and ever. People: Every day I will praise You and extol Your Name for ever and ever. Leader: Great is the Lord and most worthy of praise; His greatness no one can fathom. People: One generation commends Your works to another; they tell of Your mighty acts. They speak of the glorious splendor of Your majesty and I will meditate on Your wonderful works. INVOCATION Leader: Almighty God, guide us with Your Spirit and teach us Your truth through Your Word. Bind the evil one from our lives and help us to worship You with our whole hearts. In Jesus name we pray. Amen. SONGS OF PRAISE (insert & screen) Step By Step Draw Me Close CALL TO CONFESSION (Matthew 5:17-20) Leader: Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. Therefore, anyone who sets aside one of the least of these commands and teaches others accordingly will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven. Our righteousness is like filthy rags so we must confess our sins to God and trust in the grace offered to us in Jesus. Please join me in silent prayer.

SILENT PRAYER PRAYER OF CONFESSION Unison: Gracious God forgive our wandering from Your Word. We have accepted some but not all that You have revealed. We like the parts that seem convenient but struggle with that which is challenging for us. Forgive our lack of commitment to Your Word and enable us to live by it. In Jesus name we pray. Amen ASSURANCE OF PARDON (John 12:44-50) Leader: Then Jesus cried out, Whoever believes in Me does not believe in Me only, but in the One who sent Me. The one who looks at Me is seeing the One who sent Me. I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in Me should stay in darkness. If anyone hears My words but does not keep them, I do not judge that person. For I did not come to judge the world, but to save the world. There is a judge for the one who rejects Me and does not accept My words; the very words I have spoken will condemn them at the last day. For I did not speak on My own, but the Father who sent me commanded Me to say all that I have spoken. I know that His command leads to eternal life. So whatever I say is just what the Father has told Me to say. Sisters and brothers in Christ, believe the good news: you are forgiven. AFFIRMATION OF FAITH The Second Helvetic Confession SCRIPTURE TEACHES FULLY ALL GODLINESS. We judge, therefore, that from these Scriptures are to be derived true wisdom and godliness, the reformation and government of churches; as also instruction in all duties of piety; and, to be short, the confirmation of doctrines, and the rejection of all errors, moreover, all exhortations according to that word of the apostle, All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof. Again, I am writing these instructions to you, says the apostle to Timothy, so that you may know how one ought to behave in the household of God. SCRIPTURE IS THE WORD OF GOD. Again, the selfsame apostle to the Thessalonians: When, says he, you received the Word of God which you heard from us, you accepted it, not as the word of men but as what it really is, the Word of God, For the Lord Himself has said in the Gospel, It is not you who speak, but the Spirit of My Father speaking through you ; therefore he who hears you hears Me, and he who rejects me rejects Him who sent me. Announcements Oct. 19, 2014 We believe: We confess that God alone is Lord of the conscience, but this freedom is for the purpose of allowing us to be subject always and primarily to God s Word. The Spirit will never prompt our conscience to conclusions that are at odds with the Scriptures that He has inspired. The revelation of the incarnate Word does not minimize, qualify, or set aside the authority of the written Word. We are happy to confess ourselves captive to the Word of God, not just individually, but also as members of a community of faith, extending through time and around the globe. In particular, we join with other members of the Presbyterian and Reformed community to affirm the secondary authority of the Book of Confessions as a faithful exposition of the Word of God. Do not forget to do good and to share (Hebrews 13:16). Acts of kindness and sharing are particularly pleasing to God, even when they go unnoticed by others. ---Stewardship Committee The Old Tyme Hymn Sing will begin tonight, Sunday, October 19, at 6 p.m. in the Sanctuary at First Presbyterian Church. Refreshments will follow the program. Bobby Shomo will be the special music for the evening. Please plan to attend and invite your friends. You are invited to a fundraiser for the House of Compassion, Karaoke for a Cause. This family friendly event will feature a pulled pork meal, karaoke and music, a raffle for one of the original windows from the House (originally Trinity Lutheran Church. This window would have been in the pastor s office), and several silent auction items. Join us on Saturday, October 25, from 5:30 9:00 pm, at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Marshalltown. Cost is $10 for ages 13 and up, $5 for ages 3 12, and free for those under 3. The children need to remember to bring their banks with money collected for the mission trip to the Children's Sermon on Sunday, October 26, 2014.
