Spreading A Love for God and His Glory October 1, 2017 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work. 2 Timothy 3:16-17

Our worship is a response to God s initiative. The pattern of our worship reflects the gospel. WELCOME & ANNOUNCEMENTS *CALL TO WORSHIP: Psalm 113 Leader: Praise the Lord. All: Praise, O servants of the Lord, praise the name of the Lord. Leader: Let the name of the Lord be praised, both now and forevermore. All: From the rising of the sun to the place where it sets, the name of the Lord is to be praised. Leader: The Lord is exalted over all the nations, his glory above the heavens. All: Who is like the Lord our God, the One who sits enthroned on high, who stoops down to look on the heavens and the earth? Leader: He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the ash heap; All: he seats them with princes, with the princes of their people. Leader: He settles the barren woman in her home as a happy mother of children. All: Praise the Lord. *PRAISE THE FATHER, PRAISE THE SON O Sov reign God, O matchless King, the saints adore, the angels sing, and fall before the throne of grace; to you belong the highest praise. These sufferings, this passing tide, under your wings I will abide, and every enemy shall flee; you are my hope and victory. Praise the Father, praise the Son, praise the Spirit, three in one; clothed in power and in grace, the name above all other names. continued above - 2 -

*PRAISE THE FATHER, PRAISE THE SON, continued To the valley, for my soul; thy great descent has made me whole! Your word my heart has welcomed home; now peace like water ever flows. (Chorus 2x) (Bridge 2x) Yours is the kingdom, yours is the power, yours is the glory forever! the name above all other names. *REVELATION SONG Worthy is the Lamb who was slain; holy, holy is he. Sing a new song to him who sits on heaven's mercy seat. (Repeat) Call to Worship Worship begins with God who invites us and welcomes us into his presence. Because of Christ, we can approach God with boldness even though we are sinful and weak. Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come. With all creation I sing praise to the King of kings; you are my ev'rything and I will adore you. Clothed in rainbows of living color, flashes of lightning, rolls of thunder; blessing and honor, strength and glory and power be to you, the only wise King. Filled with wonder, awestruck wonder at the mention of your name. Jesus, your name is power, breath and living water, such a marv'lous mystery! (Chorus 2x) *Indicates when to stand. All Music Copied Under CCLI License #34680-3 -

*PRAYER OF PRAISE *THIS IS MY FATHER S WORLD -Hymn #111 This is my Father's world, and to my list'ning ears All nature sings and around me rings, the music of the spheres This is my Father's world, I rest me in the thought Of rocks and trees of skies and seas, His hand the wonders wrought This is my Father's world, the birds their carols raise The morning light the lily white, declare their maker's praise This is my Father's world, He shines in all that's fair In the rustling grass I hear him pass, He speaks to me ev'rywhere This is my Father's world, O let me ne'er forget That though the wrong seems oft so strong, God is the ruler yet This is my Father's world, the battle is not done Jesus who died shall be satisfied, and earth and heav'n be one COMMON CONFESSION OF SIN SCRIPTURE OF EXHORTATION: Psalm 37:3-5, 8-9 Trust in the LORD, and do good; dwell in the land and befriend faithfulness. Delight yourself in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him, and he will act. Refrain from anger, and forsake wrath! Fret not yourself; it tends only to evil. For the evildoers shall be cut off, but those who wait for the LORD shall inherit the land. continued above - 4 -

All: Give ear to my words, O LORD; the sound of my cry, for you are not a God who delights in wickedness; evil may not dwell with you. Yet, my heart is often filled with wicked and lustful thoughts, and I delight in my desires and not yours. The boastful shall not stand before your eyes; you hate all evildoers. Yet, I am proud and haughty. You destroy those who speak lies; the LORD abhors the bloodthirsty and deceitful man. Yet, I have a deceitful tongue and savor thoughts of vengeance and wrath. My King and my God, for to you do I pray. Forgive me my sins, cleanse me of the filth of my transgressions. Through the abundance of your steadfast love, will I enter your house. Lead me, O LORD, in your righteousness for the sake of your beloved Son. Amen. (adapted from Psalm 5) SILENT CONFESSION OF SIN Call to Confession We all sin daily, in thought and word and deed. As we come into God s presence, we acknowledge how we have rebelled against our King and seek his forgiveness. DECLARATION OF GRACE: Romans 8:1-2 Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death. *CONFESSION OF CHRIST S GRACE: The Heidelberg Catechism (1563), Question 1 Leader: What is your only comfort in life and in death? All: That I am not my own, but belong body and soul, in life and in death to my faithful Savior Jesus Christ. Leader: He has fully paid for all my sins with his precious blood, and has set me free from the tyranny of the devil. He also watches over me in such a way that not a hair can fall from my head without the will of my Father in heaven: in fact, all things must work together for my salvation. All: Because I belong to him, Christ, by his Holy Spirit, assures me of eternal life and makes me wholeheartedly willing and ready from now on to live for him. - 5 -

*BEAUTIFUL LORD When the storm is raging all around me, you are the peace that calms my troubled sea. When the cares of this world darken my day, you are the light that shines, and shows me the way. Oh the beauty of your majesty, on the cross you showed your love for me. Beautiful Lord, awesome and mighty, I m captured by this love I see. Beautiful Lord, tender and holy, your mercy brings me to my knees. It s your mercy that has made me free, beautiful Lord. When my sin is all that I can see, your grace remains the shelter that I seek. And when my weakness is all I can give, your gentle Spirit gives me strength again. Oh the beauty of your majesty, on the cross you showed your love for me. (Chorus 2x) Offering We give back to God a portion of what he has given us to use to declare that he is Lord of all. (This is part of our service as a church family, and visitors should not feel obligated to participate.) OFFERTORY & RESPONSE Diaconal Offering today: Please use the Special Offering envelopes located in the pew racks. Reminder: please sign and pass the Attendance Register down the pew. 11 a.m. Service: Children ages 4-6 excused for Children s Church (downstairs in the Corner Classroom) - 6 -

*JESUS I AM RESTING, RESTING Jesus, I am resting, resting, in the joy of what Thou art; I am finding out the greatness of Thy loving heart. Thou hast bid me gaze upon Thee, and Thy beauty fills my soul, For by Thy transforming power, Thou hast made me whole. Jesus, I am resting, resting, in the joy of what Thou art; I am finding out the greatness of Thy loving heart. O, how great Thy loving kindness, vaster, broader than the sea! O, how marvelous Thy goodness, lavished all on me! Yes, I rest in Thee, Beloved, know what wealth of grace is Thine, Know Thy certainty of promise, and have made it mine. Ever lift Thy face upon me as I work and wait for Thee; Resting neath Thy smile, Lord Jesus, earth s dark shadows flee. Brightness of my Father s glory, sunshine of my Father s face, Keep me ever trusting, resting, fill me with Thy grace. - 7 -

The Five Solas of the Reformation Pastor Lloyd Pierson, Ph.D. Scripture Alone - 2 Timothy 3:14-17 (ESV) But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it 15 and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work. Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. 1 Peter 1:22-25 22 Having purified your souls by your obedience to the truth for a sincere brotherly love, love one another earnestly from a pure heart, 23 since you have been born again, not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God; 24 for "All flesh is like grass and all its glory like the flower of grass. The grass withers, and the flower falls, 25 but the word of the Lord remains forever." And this word is the good news that was preached to you. Psalm 119:103-105 103 How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth! 104 Through your precepts I get understanding; therefore I hate every false way. 105 Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. - 8 -

Sermon Outline I. Scripture is the final authority II. Scripture transforms III. Living with fuzzy edges Sermon God addresses and speaks to us by the reading and preaching of his Word. Both Christians and non-christians need to hear the good news of salvation and grow in it. Sermon Questions 1. What does it mean to say that Scripture is not the only source of truth, but the final source? Why does this matter? 2. What is the difference between the Church determined the canon of Scripture vs the Church affirmed the self-authenticity of the canon of Scripture? Why does this matter? 3. A criticism that many use against Scripture Alone is the chaos and division that occurs when different interpretations claim to be true. Why is it important to acknowledge this problem? How do we respond to it? 4. Scripture gives us sufficient knowledge but not complete (exhaustive) knowledge. How does this underscore our own humility as we bring our questions to Scripture for answers? How does this fuel our confidence? 5. What is meant by learning to live with fuzzy edges? Where have you seen a quest for absolute certainty go awry in the world around us? 6. How does Jesus being the Word made flesh restore our confidence and encourage our evangelism? - 9 -

The Lord s Supper The gospel is not only heard, but visibly seen as God invites us to commune with him at his table. In the Lord s Supper we remember and experience Jesus saving work. *BY THY MERCY Jesus, Lord of life and glory, bend from heaven your gracious ear; While our waiting souls adore thee, friend of helpless sinners, hear: From the depth of nature's blindness, from the hardening power of sin, from all malice and unkindness, from the pride that lurks within, By thy mercy, O deliver us, good Lord By thy mercy, O deliver us, good Lord, good Lord. When temptation sorely presses, in the day of Satan's power, In our times of deep distresses, in each dark and trying hour. When the world around is smiling, in the time of wealth and ease, Earthly joys our hearts beguiling, in the day of health and peace. In the weary hours of sickness, in the times of grief and pain, When we feel our mortal weakness, when all human help is vain. In the solemn hour of dying, in the awful judgment day, May our souls, on thee relying, find thee still our Rock and Stay. (Chorus 2x) CELEBRATION OF THE LORD S SUPPER Wine is located in the two outer rings; juice is located in the center ring. (See FCC observance on below) PRAYER FOR THE CONGREGATION At Faith Covenant, the Lord s Supper is observed each Lord s Day as the climax of our worship service. We invite to the Lord s Table all those who are baptized disciples of Jesus Christ, under the authority of Christ and His body, the Church. By eating the bread and drinking the cup with us as a visitor, you are acknowledging to our church that you are in covenant with God. You also acknowledge that you are a sinner, without hope except in the sovereign mercy of God, and that you are trusting in Jesus Christ alone for your salvation. If you have any doubts about your participation, please speak to the pastor or one of the elders after the service. Wine and bread are the elements of the supper as instituted by Jesus Christ. We recommend the use of wine; however we offer both juice and wine in the tray to allow true liberty of conscience. - 10 -

*HOW GREAT IS OUR GOD The splendor of the King clothed in majesty. Let all the earth rejoice, let all the earth rejoice. He wraps himself in light and darkness tries to hide and trembles at his voice, and trembles at his voice. How great is our God, sing with me. How great is our God, and all will see how great, how great is our God. Age to age he stands and time is in his hands. Beginning and the end, beginning and the end; the Godhead three in one: Father, Spirit, Son. The Lion and the Lamb, the Lion and the Lamb. (Bridge 2x) Name above all names, you are worthy of our praise and my heart will sing how great is our God. (Chorus 2x) Benediction Just as worship begins with God s call, it ends with God sending us into the world with his word of grace. We go forth to live and serve by the power of his grace, not our own strength. *BENEDICTION If you are in need of personal prayer, an elder is available up front after the service.
