The Bible Treasure Hunt 1 Q1. What is the Bible? A. The Bible is the only Book that is God s Word to us. The Bible is the only book that is God s Word to us. It is better and more important than all other books combined! KNOWLEDGE OBJECTIVE Children will begin to comprehend and articulate the vast difference between the Bible and other books. ATTITUDE OBJECTIVE Children will gain a deeper appreciation for simply owning a Bible. Children will treat their Bibles with reverence and respect by not leaving them under their beds or in their family s vehicles. Children will grow in their gratitude toward the Lord, Who provided His Word. 1 Thessalonians 2:13a, When you received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God. The Bible is important because it teaches us about God. He wants us to know Who He is and what He wants to do in this world. God has a perfect will for the whole world. We learn about Him and His will in the Bible. How do you think we should treat our Bibles? Why should we treat the Bible better than other books? How do you think God feels when we don t treat the Bible very well? What are some ways we can show that the Bible is special to us? WHAT THIS DOCTRINE REVEALS ABOUT GOD The Bible is the most special and important book ever written. The apostle Paul wrote in 5

Q1. What is the Bible? A. The Bible is the only Book that is God s Word to us. 6

The Bible Treasure Hunt 1 Q2. How can we know that the Bible really is the true Word of God? A. The Spirit of God helps us know that the Bible is God s Word. The Spirit of God helps us know for sure that the Bible is God s Word. KNOWLEDGE OBJECTIVE Children will understand that the Bible is God s Word. Children will know that the Holy Spirit helps people understand the Bible. ATTITUDE OBJECTIVE Children will be thankful to God for giving us the Holy Spirit. Children will ask the Holy Spirit to help them understand the Bible. that we need to understand His truths. Without the help of the Holy Spirit, we could not understand anything about God and His ways. If you are a believer in Christ, the Holy Spirit will give you understanding as you hear or read the Bible. Can a person who doesn t know God understand the Bible? Why should we be thankful for the Holy Spirit? What did the Holy Spirit do to help men write the Bible? Why might some people believe that the Bible is just another book? WHAT THIS DOCTRINE REVEALS ABOUT GOD The Holy Spirit of God reveals the truth of the Bible to us (1 Corinthians 2:12). God gives us all 7

Q2. How can we know that the Bible really is the true Word of God? A. The Spirit of God helps us know that the Bible is God s Word. 8

The Bible Treasure Hunt 1 Q3. How did God give us the Bible? A. God gave holy men His words to write down. 2 Peter 1:21b - But holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost. God used holy men to write down His exact words. The result is the Word of God. KNOWLEDGE OBJECTIVE Children will know that about forty men over many years wrote what God wanted them to write down. Children will understand that the Bible is God s Word. ATTITUDE OBJECTIVE Word of God. Second Peter 1:21 says that the Bible did not come from man s own ideas. God used His Holy Spirit to communicate His very words to the writers so that they wrote the Bible as if God were writing it Himself. That makes the Bible a very special book! Did one man write the Bible all by himself? How did God give us the Bible? What is inspiration? Who told the men what to write? Can we see the Holy Spirit? Children will be grateful for the Bible. Children will thank God for giving us His Word so we can know Him and learn about Him. WHAT THIS DOCTRINE REVEALS ABOUT GOD God chose about forty different men to write down His words. The result is the Bible, the 9

Q3. How did God give us the Bible? A. God gave holy men His words to write down. 2 Peter 1:21b - But holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost. 10

The Bible Treasure Hunt 1 Q4. Does the Bible teach any errors or lies? A. No. God s Word is true because God tells only the truth. God s Word is true because God only tells the truth. KNOWLEDGE OBJECTIVE Children will learn that God makes no mistakes. Children will learn that whatever God does is always perfect. from the beginning, it means that all of God s words have always been and will always be true. God cannot lie, so it would be impossible for Him to include lies in the Bible. God cannot even make a mistake. When He communicated His Word to the Bible s writers, His words came across exactly as He intended. There were no misunderstandings and no errors. God s Word was written down perfectly. So we can be confident that the Bible teaches us God s truth. ATTITUDE OBJECTIVE Children will be confident that God gave His Word through men exactly the way He wanted it. Children will understand that the Bible is superior to all other books. WHAT THIS DOCTRINE REVEALS ABOUT GOD Does the Bible teach us anything that is not true? Does the Bible have mistakes in it? How can we know? Who helps us know for sure that the Bible is true and that it is God s Word? What do we mean when we say the words of Scripture are inspired? When Psalm 119:160 says, Thy word is true 11

Q4. Does the Bible teach any errors or lies? A. No. God s Word is true because God tells only the truth 12

The Bible Treasure Hunt 1 Q5. What does the Bible teach us? A. The Bible teaches what God wants us to believe and how He wants us to behave. The Bible teaches us what God wants us to believe and how He wants us to act. KNOWLEDGE OBJECTIVE Children will begin to understand why we must learn and obey what the Bible teaches. Children will begin to understand how God wants them to act. ATTITUDE OBJECTIVE Children will begin to care more about God s Word. Children will desire to know what God s Word says because it reveals what God is like. fear God means to have respect for Him. It means to respond to God according to Who He is and what He can do. As we learn what God expects of us His commands we will also learn more about what He is like. His commands reveal His character. For example, He commands us to be kind to one another (Ephesians 4:32) because He is kind. What are some truths the Bible teaches us about God? Why does God command us to be kind to one another? Why does God want us to share with others? Why does God want us to be a helper to others? WHAT THIS DOCTRINE REVEALS ABOUT GOD Ecclesiastes 12:13 says that our duty is to fear God and keep his commandments. To 13

Q5. What does the Bible teach us? A. The Bible teaches what God wants us to believe and how He wants us to behave. 14

The Bible Treasure Hunt 1 Q6. Can we be sure that God s Word is still good and true for us today? A. Yes. God s Word is good and true forever. God has kept His Word for us! Many things change in our world, but God s Word is forever. It will never change. KNOWLEDGE OBJECTIVE Children will learn that God never changes what He is like. Children will learn that the Bible will never change nor be destroyed. Children will know that there is no other book like the Bible. ATTITUDE OBJECTIVE Children will gain a deeper appreciation that God and His Word are unchanging. Children will grow in their gratitude to God for providing His Word to them. Children will rejoice that God keeps His promise to protect the Bible from being lost or destroyed. WHAT THIS DOCTRINE REVEALS ABOUT GOD The Bible records many of God s promises. Promises are God s commitments to either do or not do something. In Matthew 5:18, God promises to preserve His Word so we might read it and learn about Him. We can trust God to keep His promises. And He has. He has kept His Word from being lost or destroyed. Both God and His Word, the Bible, will never change! Why is the Bible different from other books? Why might someone want to destroy the Bible? What does it mean when we say that God will never change? The Bible tells us God s promises to us. Name two of those promises. 15

Q6. Can we be sure God s Word is still good and true for us today? A. Yes. God s Word is good and true forever. 16

The Bible Treasure Hunt 1 Q7. Why do we need the Bible? A. We need the Bible to show us Who God is and how we can be right with Him. The Bible leads us to believe in Christ and shows us how to become more like Him. KNOWLEDGE OBJECTIVE Children will understand the need to have God s Word in order to understand salvation. Children will know what it means to be saved. (John 20:31). The Bible tells us we are sinners (Romans 3:23). Sin is anything that violates God s holiness. God is perfect. He cannot allow sin to go unpunished. The punishment for sin is eternal separation from God (Romans 6:23). But God sent His perfect Son, Jesus, to die for our sins. Jesus paid the penalty for our sins we might live forever with God in Heaven someday (John 3:16). All those who put their trust in Jesus death will be saved from their sins (Acts 16:31). ATTITUDE OBJECTIVE Children will place great value on God s Word. Children will desire to know God s Word so they might know God. Do you realize you are a sinner? Why must God judge sin? Why did Jesus die on the cross? Do you understand what it means to trust in Jesus as your Savior? Would you like to? WHAT THIS DOCTRINE REVEALS ABOUT GOD God has provided the Bible so we might know what it means to be saved from our sins 17

Q7. Why do we need the Bible? Me A. We need the Bible to show us Who God is and how we can be right with Him. 18

The Bible Treasure Hunt 1 Q8. How can we truly get to know God? A. We get to know God by faith, which comes from hearing His Word. Can we really know God without the Bible? No. The Bible is the only book that is both from God and about God. We need to know it! KNOWLEDGE OBJECTIVE Children will understand the need for the Bible in order to know God. Children will understand the importance of coming to church to hear God s Word taught. WHAT THIS DOCTRINE REVEALS ABOUT GOD The Bible is the best way to get to know God (Romans 10:17). It teaches us about God s character and His amazing thoughts. God wants us to know Who He is and what He wants to do in this world. God has also given to us pastors, teachers, and parents who can read the Bible and teach us the truths we need to be saved from our sins and grow as a believer in Christ. ATTITUDE OBJECTIVE Children will love and value God s Word. Children will share their appreciation for God s Word. Children will desire to hear their teachers tell them about God from His Word. Why do we need the Bible? Would we know how to be saved from our sins if we did not have the Bible? What have you learned about God from the Bible? 19

Q8. How can we truly get to know God?? A. We get to know God by faith, which comes from hearing His Word. 20

The Bible Treasure Hunt 1 Q9. What authority does the Bible have over us? A. The Bible is our highest authority because it comes from God. 2 Timothy 3:16a - All scripture is given by inspiration of God. The Bible is our highest authority since it is God s word to us. We should put our faith in the Bible and God s commands for us. KNOWLEDGE OBJECTIVE Children will understand what authority is and how they should respond to it. Children will understand that the Bible is the most important authority in their lives. WHAT THIS DOCTRINE REVEALS ABOUT GOD Second Timothy 3:16 teaches us that all Scripture is given by inspiration of God. The words we find in our Bibles are God s words! We should believe they are true. According to 2 Peter 1:21, the prophets and apostles that wrote the Bible did not write the words they wanted to write. They wrote what the Holy Spirit told them to write. Therefore, the Bible is God s Word to us. It should is our highest authority. We must obey what it tells us to do. ATTITUDE OBJECTIVE Children will consider their attitude toward the Bible, their highest authority. Children will consider their willingness to obey the Bible. Children will gain a deeper love for God and respect His authority over them. What are some authorities you have in your life? Whom must you obey? Since the Bible is the highest authority in your life, how should you respond to it? What is one thing the Bible tells you to do? Name one way in which you have obeyed the Bible. 21

Q9. What authority does the Bible have over us? A. The Bible is our highest authority because it comes from God. 2 Timothy 3:16a - All scripture is given by inspiration of God. 22

The Bible Treasure Hunt 1 Q10. How does God want us to feel about the Bible? A. God wants us to love and believe the Bible. God wants us to love and believe the Bible with our whole hearts. KNOWLEDGE OBJECTIVE Children will understand that God wants them to love the Bible. Children will understand that God wants them to believe the Bible. WHAT THIS DOCTRINE REVEALS ABOUT GOD The Bible is the only book we have from God. God wants us to love reading, obeying, and believing it! The writer of Psalm 119:97 told God how much he loved God s law. He loved it so much that he thought about it all the time. The more he thought about it, the more He loved it! The more we think about the Bible, the more we should love it too! ATTITUDE OBJECTIVE Children will gain a deeper appreciation for owning a Bible. Children will treat their Bibles with reverence and respect. Children will desire to know more about God through the Bible. How do you think we should treat our Bibles? What is one thing you are glad you learned about God from the Bible? How can we show God that we love the Bible? 23
