Systematic Theology. Princeton Theological Seminary. May 2017 (anticipated). Dissertation Title: Responding to Grace: The Covenantal Shape of Human Agency in the Theology of Karl Barth. Dissertation Committee: George Hunsinger (chair), John Bowlin, Jeffrey Stout, Gerald McKenny (external reader). Abstract: Many theologians have questioned Karl Barth s ability to attest a visible growth in the Christian life. This dissertation looks to Barth s account of human agency as responsibility before God and neighbor to supply the concepts needed for an account of Christian growth. I argue that Barth s covenantal account of human action as response to the God who has taken responsibility for us elevates human willing through its description of our recognition, need, gladness, and love for God and neighbor. I sketch the basic contours of an account of Christian growth consonant with Barth s description of human being as a response to the gospel. MDiv. Princeton Theological Seminary. May 2010 BA.
