Psalm Lord, every nation on earth will adore you (Psalm 72). Second Reading The Gentiles are copartners in the promise in Christ Jesus (Ephesians 3:2-3a, 5-6). Gospel The magi were overjoyed at seeing the star (Matthew 2:1-12). The Call to Worship is What Star Is This? with text published in the Paris Breviary of 1736: What star is this, that beams so bright, more lovely than the noonday light? Tis sent to announce a new-born King, glad tidings of our God to bring. The melody was written in 1609 by the organist and composer Michael Pretorius (1571-1621) who entered the service of the Duke of Brunswick in 1604; he was famous as composer of church music, including a mammoth edition of over twelve hundred songs. e began to write a complete encyclopedia of the art and practice of music, of which he finished three volumes. The Offertory is ow Brightly Beams the Morning Star by Phillip Nicolai, with music by Johann Sebastian Bach. The Communion begins with a piece adapted from a work by Palestrina: Arise, shine, O Jerusalem, for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord in risen upon thee. We have seen his star in the East, and have come to worship him. The kings of Tharsis and the isles shall give him presents, the kings of Arabia and Saba shall bring gifts. All kings shall fall down before him, all nations shall do him service. The second piece at 9 is the motet O Magnum Mysterium by Tomas Luis de Victoria (circa 1548-1611), who was born in Avila, in old Castile, and is known to have gone to Rome around 1564, where he joined the monastery founded by St. Ignatius Loyola as part of the fight against Lutheranism. In 1575 he was ordained as a priest, but did not stay in Italy. The text translates: O great mystery and wonderful sign, that lowly beasts should see the Lord born, lying in a manger. O Blessed Virgin, whose womb was worthy to carry the Lord Jesus Christ. Alleluia. The third piece at 9 is The Kings by the German composer Peter Cornelius (1824-1874) of Mainz, who was a friend of Liszt and Wagner, and wrote music criticism for several major Berlin journals. The text is charming: Three kings from Persian lands afar, to Jordan follow the pointing star; and this the quest of the travelers three, where the newborn King of the Jews may be. Full royal gifts they bear for the King, gold, incense, myrrh are their offering. The star shines out with a steadfast ray, the kings to Bethlehem make their way. And there in worship they bend the knee, as Mary's child in her lap they see. Their royal gifts they show to the King, gold, incense, myrrh are their offering. Thou child of man lo, to Bethlehem the kings are traveling, travel with them! The star of mercy, the star of grace, shall lead thy heart to its resting place. Gold, incense, myrrh thou canst not bring, offer thy heart to the infant King. Offer thy heart! The Communion at 10:30 begins with Arise, Shine, O Jerusalem (above) and continues with There Shall a Star Come Out of Israel by Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847), best known for his incidental music to Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, incorporating the famous wedding march. Today's piece is a chorus from his unfinished oratorio Christus and also incorporates Nicolai's hymn (today s Offertory). The text is taken from Numbers 24:17: There shall come a star out of Jacob, and a scepter shall rise out of Israel, with might destroying princes and cities. Mendelssohn wrote many smaller scale sacred works for unaccompanied choir and for choir with organ including ear My Prayer, which includes the famous solo O For the Wings Of a Dove.
Page Three Church of the Nativity January 7, 2018 The Epiphany of the Lord According to the Gospel of Matthew, the Magi knew where they were travelling and they knew whom they had come to see, for they asked: Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews? For we observed his star at its rising, and have come to pay him homage. The late Fr. Raymond E. Brown, S.S., reminds us that beyond the historical realities of their journey are deeper spiritual realities that Matthew s Gospel is driving at, connecting the natural revelation of the pagan world to the revelation of the Jewish Scripture and to the divine manifestation of Jesus himself. But when we imagine the journey, coming from ancient Persia, Babylon or Arabia, we wonder what had they experienced before arriving in Bethlehem? ow difficult was their journey of hundreds of miles on camel, donkey or foot? Did they ever think to turn around and just go home? Matthew does not focus on their daunting journey, however, only on their arrival, because they had travelled to discover the source of salvation. But when they arrived, they were lacking something, which is why they went to erod. What they lacked was the special revelation given to the Jews, as embodied in Matthew s citation, combined from Micah 5:1 and 2 Samuel 5:2: And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who is to shepherd my people Israel. As for the Magi: When they saw that the star had stopped, they were overwhelmed with joy. On entering the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother; and they knelt down and paid him homage. Then, opening their treasure chests, they offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. On a journey of hope, the disappointments and struggles dissipate the moment you arrive at your destination. They would return home warily because they had been warned in a dream not to return to erod, but it is not wrong to suspect that they were transformed people when they arrived back home, for they brought home a new light. Compare this to erod, who had access to the revelation of Scripture but whose only journey was one of despair. Jesus was a threat to erod s narrowly conceived power; the hope represented by Jesus was something to destroy, not celebrate. Perhaps the Magi faced questions when they returned about why they travelled so far: Why go to see this child? Why follow that star? It was a journey of hope, not just for them, but for all of humanity. Father Brown went on to say of this journey, In these Magi, Matthew sees an anticipation of Jesus promise, I tell you, many will come from east and west and will eat with Abraham and Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven (8:11). The Magi are ultimately a symbol of the journey we are all on, the true journey, which takes us not far from home, but back home to God. Iran or Saudi Arabia, Tarshish or the Isles come to mind, but Cologne, Germany would be a good choice. There the Shrine of the Three Kings has been the centerpiece of the city s cathedral since the fourth century. Today it is the largest reliquary in the world: a gilded and ornamented triple casket gleaming high above the altar. In the fourth century, the supposed relics of the wise men were taken from Constantinople to Milan, where they remained until the German Emperor with the unlikely name Frederick Barbarossa (Red Beard) gave them to the Archbishop of Cologne. Ever since, pilgrims have streamed into the city to honor the magi, the first of all pilgrims, and thus the heavenly patrons of all who have some holy wanderlust. This largest Gothic cathedral in Europe today was begun in the mid-1200s to house the relics. In medieval times, the relics in a city s possession were often the key to a sound international economy. The reliquary was last opened in 1864, and the remains of three men were indeed discovered. The cathedral is well worth a visit, with enormous twin spires forming the largest façade of any church in the world (it is the model for St. Patrick s in New York). Construction began in 1248 and ended in 1880, a six-hundred-year project. Today, it is a World eritage Site, described by the U.N. as an exceptional work of human creative genius. This great treasure of our tradition suffered fourteen direct bomb hits in World War II but did not collapse.
