People of God, look about and see the faces of those we hardly know: strangers, sojourners, forgotten friends, the ones who need an outstretched hand. We come, praising God together. *OPENING HYMN JOYFUL, JOYFUL, WE ADORE THEE No. 59 *HOSPITALITY MOMENT No matter who you are or where you are on life s journey, you are welcome here. GATHERING PRAYER Gracious God, gentle in your power and strong in your tenderness, you have brought us forth from the womb of your being, and breathed into us the breath of life. We know that we do not live by bread alone but by every word that comes from you. Feed our deep hungers with the living bread that you give us in Jesus Christ. May Jesus promise, Where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I in the midst of them, be fulfilled in us. Make us a joyful company of your people so that with the faithful in every place and time we may praise and honor you, God Most High. Hear our prayer for this day and the future yet to come, as Jesus taught us to pray THE LORD S PRAYER (using debts ) Our Father forgive us our debts Amen CHILDREN S MESSAGE Pastor Anna V. Copeland and Pastor Dan Hollis ANTHEM We Shall Light a Thousand Candles David Rasbach Tell it far and tell it near, speak of the love He gave us. *DOXOLOGY AND PRAYER OF COMMITMENT No. 34 HONORED GUESTS Members and Friends of First Parish Church. GREETING A TIME OF FAREWELL Jan Jonas, Moderator COLLEAGUES Rev. Rick Floyd, Rev. Mike Bennett, Rev. Dale Rosenberger, Rev Lorain Giles, Rev. Sue Frost and Dr. Cecile Windels. Our faith community constantly changes. People come and go. Babies are born. Children and youth grow up. People commit themselves to one another. Loved ones and friends among us come to the end of their earthly lives. Individuals move into our community and church life. Others leave us, growing toward new places, new experiences and new opportunities. God calls us to use the gifts entrusted to us as Followers of the Way of Jesus, as ministers of God s good news for all people. We recognize together this time of passage for us and for our Senior Pastor Anna Verlee Copeland as she retires after thirty years from local parish ministry and departs after six years as our pastor. She joins her husband Ellis for their next chapter, trusting God for whatever the future may bring. REMEMBRANCE AND GRATITUDE Jeff McConnell, Chair of the Assessors Dale Rosenberger, Pastor, Colleague and Friend ENDING Joanne Myers: In late summer of 2012, we called Verlee A. Copeland, Pastor Anna to serve as the thirtieth settled pastor of First Parish Church. Her ministry began in 1988 as a pastor intern at the Church of the Redeemer and chaplain at Yale-New Haven Hospital. Ordained in 1989, she served churches in Greeley, Colorado and Hinsdale, Illinois before founding The Copeland Institute, a retreat center for personal transformation and community renewal in 2010. Pastor Anna and her husband, Ellis continue their ministry through Healthy Habits for Life as they journey west to a new chapter guided by God s grace. Anna Copeland: I thank First Parish Church, Congregational, United Church of Christ, its members and friends both here and in the wider community, for the love, kindness, and support shown me these last six years. *THE BLESSING AND THREEFOLD AMEN As Paul departed from the beloved followers of the Way of Jesus at Philippi, he blessed them with these words: Finally, beloved, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is pleasing, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. Keep on doing the things that you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, and the God of peace will be with you. POSTLUDE NUN DANKET ALLE GOTT (from Cantata #79) J.S. Bach (1685-1750) I ask forgiveness for ways I ve missed the mark, mistakes I ve made. I am grateful for the ways my leadership has been accepted. As I leave, I carry with me the memory of the countless God moments and deepened faith we ve shared together. People: We receive your gratitude, offer forgiveness, and accept your departure to serve God in a new way. We express our gratitude for your service among us. We ask your forgiveness for our mistakes. Your influence on our faith and faithfulness will remain with us even as you depart. Anna Copeland: I forgive you and accept your gratitude, trusting that our service together and our parting give glory to God. Flowers are given in appreciation and gratitude to Pastor Anna from the First Parish Congregation. RECEPTION Please join Ellis and Anna at coffee hour in Fellowship Hour following worship as they wish to express their appreciation and gratitude for the privilege of serving this church. To God be the glory! VOWS OF RELEASE Jan Jonas: Do you, the members and friends of First Parish Church release Anna Verlee Copeland from her call as your Senior Pastor? People: We do, with the help of God. Jan Jonas: Do you, Anna Verlee Copeland, release this local church from turning to you and depending on you as their pastor? Anna Copeland: I do, with the help of God. Jan Jonas: Do you offer your encouragement for the continued ministry here and on the relationship with an other who will come to serve alongside our Associate Pastor, staff and church members and friends. Anna Copeland: I do, with the help of God. WITNESS OF THE ASSOCIATION Philip Drew, Vice Moderator The York Association UCC As an officer of the York Association of the Maine Conference of The United Church of Christ, I witness to the words spoken here today: words of gratitude, forgiveness and release. The member churches of our York Association and Maine Conference hold each of you in prayer. We pledge our support in the transitions signified in this service. Officers and Leaders of the Church: Thanks be to God.

LAYING ON OF HANDS AND PRAYER Pastor Dan Hollis God, whose everlasting love for all is trustworthy, guide each of us to trust the future which rests in your care. Bless Anna and Ellis as they now depart. The time we shared together in your name saw our laughter and tears, our hopes and disappointments. Guide us as we hold these cherished memories but move in new directions, until that time to come when we are united with you and with one other in glory. Amen *RECESSIONAL HYMN SENT FORTH BY GOD S BLESSING
