Newsletter of the Richfield United Church of Christ THE COLUMNS December 2018 Advent Workshop Join us on Sunday, December 2, for our annual Advent Workshop & Luncheon Lunch, provided by the Christian Education Board, begins following the 10:15 service. After lunch, the Fellowship Hall will be transformed into a craft workshop. This is a favorite RUCC tradition and we encourage you to bring your family and grandchildren and join the fun. Our Christmas Cantata The journey from Advent to Christmas is filled with vivid images of beloved traditions: the lighting of candles; Christmas trees representing the light of Christ; decorations of evergreens, symbols of the promise of rebirth; the emergence of stars atop the trees to guide the pilgrim journey; and the presentation of gifts in celebration of God's great gift to us all. Throughout the centuries, believers have sung carols that celebrate these traditions. In celebration of our congregation s 200th birthday, the RUCC choir has again created its own Christmas cantata, selecting favorite songs, carols and hymns from cantatas performed in the past. The music is from seven different cantatas and tells the timeless Christmas story of Christ from prophecy to birth. Please join the RUCC choir, narrators, soloists, bell choir and instrumentalists for this inspiring performance on Sunday, December 9, at the 10:15 service. December 24 Services Christmas Eve Candlelight Services 4:00 pm and 10:00 pm

We have a new name for our association. What s an association? This little graphic is one way to visualize how the association fits into the structure of the United Church of Christ (UCC). Each person in our church is part of a LOCAL CHURCH: The Richfield United Church of Christ. The local church is the basic unit of the life and organization of the UCC. Each local church is part of an ASSOCIATION the name of that association just changed. Our Association is part of a CONFERENCE, called the Ohio Conference. It organizes all the associations in the area. Covenanted together, the local congregations, associations and conferences are all expressions of a DENOMINATION, known at the United Church of Christ one of the largest Christian denominations in the U.S.A. OK I know that part was a little dry. But it s important to understand what comes next. Our Association has a new name: the Living Water Association. You ll be hearing a lot from them in the future, so I just wanted to make sure you knew what was going on. December Scriptures Our New Name - Living Water Association We used to belong to the Western Reserve Association (WRA). A few years ago, the WRA and Eastern Ohio Association (EOA) began to pool resources together. Eventually they decided that it was time to merge the two associations into one single association. For a while, they were known as the EOA/WRA associations. But that alphabet soup was just too difficult. So, at the Associations Annual Meeting at the end of October a resolution was passed. It reads, in part: The Western Reserve and Eastern Ohio Associations of the Ohio Conference UCC shall be known as one Association. Our name: LIVING WATER ASSOCIATION Our purpose: To be a resource and support for the health and wellbeing of our congregations that we may grow into communities of healing and grace. Refreshing our souls, hearts and lives; Renewing our congregations and communities; Restoring the world to what God intended it to be. This name evokes the great lake and many rivers that are in our region. And it is biblical. We have received 65 pledges at this time. By making a pledge for next year, we give our treasurer, Gary Obenauer, a clearer picture of what the budget will look like. Thank you all for your continued support of our church. The seeds planted 200 years ago have grown into what you see today. Let s keep this church blossoming year after year by giving it the nurturing it needs. If you have any questions about the pledge drive or how to give electronically, please contact either Gary, Reverend King, or any member of the S&A Board.
