LIVING OUR FAITH Our Lady of Mt. Carmel - January 12, 2014 Dear Friends, The Baptism of Jesus is a bit of an anomaly. Why would Jesus who is without sin and the Son of God, stand in line with those who are sinners waiting to be purified by John s baptism? The answer is that Christ has come not only to reveal divinity to us but to reveal us to ourselves. Not only is he truly God, He is truly human. And he is truly the perfect human precisely because he does not sin. God did not create us sinners. That is something that we chose. Our sins are nothing other than the rejection of the truth of our humanity. Jesus acceptance of our humanity, his drinking of our cup fully and his sharing of our wounded condition, reverses our sinful rejection of our creatureliness that God gave us in our innocence. Jesus baptism is at the heart of his mission to heal us. He enters even the wounds of our selfrejection, without having made the rejection himself. He accepts full solidarity with us even if it means being seen as sinner. Jesus baptism is one of his earliest great transformations of our human condition. There s a story about a troubled mother who had a daughter who was addicted to sweets. One day she approached Mahatma Gandhi, explained the problem to him and asked whether he might talk to the young girl. Gandhi replied, Bring your daughter to me in three weeks time and I will speak to her. After three weeks, the mother brought her daughter back to him. He took the young girl aside and spoke to her about the harmful effects of eating sweets excessively and urged her to abandon her bad habit. The mother thanked Gandhi for this advice and then asked him, But why didn t you speak to her three weeks ago? Gandhi replied, Because three weeks ago, I was still addicted to sweets. Detail, is the real power behind our words. How right he was! We know that from our own lives. Anyone who has had the right and power to ask us to make a real sacrifice has had that right and power only because he or she was inviting us into a moral reality that he or she was already living, at least essentially. Conversely, we ve all experienced how feeble is the invitation from someone who speaks the right things, but doesn t live them. (credits to Father Ronald Rolheiser) Blessings, Fr. SECOND COLLECTION WEEKEND OF SUNDAY JANUARY 19TH God has blessed us in the United States and Canada, we are truly grateful. We realize that many people in poorer countries of Asia, Africa and South America have not always been as fortunate. Our missionary Carmelite Family -- priests, sisters, and laity -- try to help God's poor people in many mission lands throughout the world. With your prayerful and financial support of the Carmelite Missions, our missionaries can be the compassion and caring of God, the hands and heart of Jesus, to the fragile, forgotten and forsaken. Challenges These are some of the challenges in Carmelite missionary areas that plead for our help and concern. Spread the good news of God's love to people in emerging countries in concrete ways they can understand. Live the message of Jesus who said: "what you do for the least of my people you do for me." Stop the rise of tuberculosis as the major cause of death for children aged 7-14 in the Southern Andes of Peru. Restore medical clinics to help the wounded of countless families in the once war-torn villages of East Timor. Assist over 10,000 poor people in our Carmelite parish of the Resurrection with its many mission stations in Torreon, Mexico. Mary is more mother than queen. St. Thérèse, Patroness of the Missions
