The Three Advents Fr. Thomas Merton, O.C.S.O., Trappist Monk, hermit, peace activist, and spiritual writer offers a great insight into understanding and celebrating the Advent Season. In his book, Seasons of Celebration, he wrote that: St. Bernard frequently returns to the idea of the three Advents of Christ. The first of these is the one in which He entered into the world, having received a Human Nature in the womb of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The third is the Advent which will bring Him into the world at the end of time to judge the living and the dead We learn to recognize the Present Advent (the second one that Bernard refers to) that is taking place at every moment in our own earthly life as wayfarers. We awaken to the fact that every moment of time is a moment of judgment, that Christ is passing by and we are judged by our awareness of His passing. If we join Him and travel with Him to the Kingdom, the judgement becomes for us salvation. But if we neglect Him and let Him go by, our neglect is our condemnation! No wonder St. Bernard would not have us be ignorant of the Second Advent. Being aware of our daily lives being lived in harmony with Jesus, is the ultimate spiritual goal of Advent. We are not to remain fixed on the Frist Advent that took place in Bethlehem. We are not to stay focused on the Third Advent, that will come sometime in the future. We are to acknowledge, proclaim, and celebrate the Second Advent that is happening now in our midst. But in attempting to do this, we must be fully participating in the life of the church. Our Advent prayers, masses, and celebrations are the way to accomplish this. Together let us be a parish that truly is ready to proclaim: O come, let us adore Him Christ, the Lord. Stewardship Corner Lesson 128 Stewardship at Holy Trinity Catholic Church Humility He has looked with favor on his lowly servant (Luke 1:48) When we think of humility, we might picture someone who shuns compliments; a shy, unassuming person, perhaps keeping to him or herself. This weekend, we celebrated Mary, the Mother of God, the Immaculate Conception and the Patron of the United States. Consider Mary s humility. A young, pregnant woman, taking an arduous trip, one without any modern conveniences and giving birth, not in a hospital or medical facility, but rather in a stable. Consider Our Savior, Jesus birth...humble beginnings. We are now in the Season of Advent, preparing to welcome Jesus. We have decorated our homes and set up our manger all in preparation. The stores continue to promote their products from Black Friday to Cyber Monday to...only x days to Christmas whether in slogan or jingle. So where s the humility. Let it be in our hearts and let us follow Mary s example of humility. Let Mary s humility be our guide to building His Kingdom here in our world and let this virtue guide our stewardship this Season of Christmas.
