THE BRIDGE Trinity Presbyterian Church 1400 Sheley Road Independence, MO 64052 816-252-5893 Fax # 252-5024 Rev. Elizabeth M. Strobel September, 2016 Volume MMXVI, No. 9 www.trinityofindependence.org trinitypresby@att.net " Dear Friends, When I first moved to Independence and started meeting people, those outside the church would ask, in that small talk kind of way, why I had relocated. I d tell them I was here to be your pastor, and I could see their mental gears turning as they tried to place Trinity. Then I d see the lightbulb go off. Oh! You re the new pastor of the funnel cake church! Why yes, I am! Even now I have conversations with people in our community who have no idea where our church is located, but when I proudly tell them that I m the Pastor of The Funnel Cake Church, they say (in one, excited breath), Oh! You re the funnel cakes on the corner and you moved corners but yours are still the best and I won t eat any others! Yes, that s us! While the fundraising is wonderful, I always remember that this is one of our biggest moments of presence in our community. People may not know where our church building is tucked away, but they absolutely know where to find our funnel cakes (and the Scouts Walking Tacos!). People who see you out and about in your daily lives may not know you re a member of Trinity, but when you walk around the square in your Trinity t-shirts, then they know exactly who you represent. Being The Funnel Cake Church gives us a tremendous opportunity to show Independence who we are. It s a fundraiser, yes, but it s also an opportunity for outreach. As we encounter so many people from our community at Santa-Cali-Gon this weekend, remember that you are telling them about our church (whether you directly talk about the church or not). Be kinder than necessary. Small talk in a way that shows you care. Be patient with the crowds and encouraging to the individuals you meet. Most people who come to Santa-Cali-Gon will have heard about Jesus; what they might be hearing for the first time, though, is how Trinity embodies the love, hospitality, and compassion of Christ. What an opportunity! Blessings, Elizabeth, Pastor of The Funnel Cake Church

Marilyn Burkett Many thanks to everyone for their cards and prayers sent following the sudden death of my sister, Becky Clayton Smyth. We appreciate them very much. Your prayers are the only thing getting us through this sad time. Please continue praying for our family, especially Becky's husband, Dean, and children, Rachel & Emily, as we all try to figure out life without Becky. Jan Privett, Stacia & Michaela Martin Thank you, Trinity, the July school drive was successful due to the generous response from our congregants. Supplies were counted, boxed, and delivered to Procter Elementary on Monday, August 8 by Susan Matthews, Beth McPike, Marilyn Burkett with great grandchildren Dalton, Madison, and Braden (who attends Procter as a 2 nd grader and provided a guided tour!) The supplies are a much appreciated ongoing need and will be collected throughout the year on Communion Sundays (along with our Salvation Army food donations). We like choices! Procter supplies netted for school use included over 200 packaged items! The CROP Walk is on Sunday, October 9th this year. - MOVING FORWARD!! All women are invited to join on Sunday, September 18 following worship (11:45 AM) for the election of officers who will make up the PW Coordinating Team and to organize our circles. We will meet in Founders Hall and snacks will be served. Circles are our small groups that will meet for Bible Study, support and fellowship according to the desires of those meeting together. We are beginning with three circles. Each woman may choose the timeframe that works best for their personal situation. The days/times are: Circle 1 ~ the second Wednesday of each month at 10 AM (our current Women s Morning Circle), Circle 2 ~ the second Tuesday of each month at 6:30 PM, and Circle 3 ~ the second Thursday of each month at 6:30 PM. Childcare will be available for each evening circle and may be arranged for the morning circle with prior notice. Each circle will be responsible for creating their own leadership team and once they begin meeting, may change their meeting dates and times according to the wishes of the majority of the group. Remember, this is the organizational stage! The fine tuning of each group is open to the ideas and discussion as they get to know each other. Within the next year we will have programs around the different purposes of the Presbyterian Women organization: Prayer and Bible Study, Mission, Social Justice, and Building Community or other topics expressed in the surveys. We are also hoping that, in time, more groups will form around shared interests among the women of Trinity. We invite your prayers and participation as we journey together in this new and exciting ministry. As always, you may contact any of us with your questions, comments or concerns. ~ Mari Shineman, Karen Spader, and Bev Thieme T.I.G.E.R.s CORNER T.I.G.E.R.s questions call Becky Layman at 830-4066 September 4: September 18: 11:30 a.m. - T.I.G.E.R.'s 11:30 a.m. - T.I.G.E.R. s SUNDAY SCHOOL Our first Sunday of actual classes will be September 18 at 9:30 am.
