THE HOLY COMMUNION Anthem O Comfort, Now My People Thomas Pavlechko O comfort, now my people, says the Lord, your God. Speak gently to Jerusalem and cry now unto her. Her warfare is accomplished, her penalty is paid. A voice cries in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way! So ev ry valley shall be raised, all mountains, hills, made low, As desert flow rs rejoice and praise, and springs of water flow; Uneven ground, a level field, rough lands become a plain. The glory of the Lord revealed, God s children see again. All humankind is grass and reeds, like flowers of the field; They wither at the gentlest breeze, their feeble lives to yield. Yet eyes are opened, ears unstopped, the lame leap like a deer, And speechless tongues all sing for joy, the weak no longer fear. For waters in the wild break forth, the desert flows with streams; The burning sand becomes a pool, the thirsty ground a spring. Their highway is the holy way God s chosen walk along. The ransomed of the Lord return with gladness, joy and song. Presentation Hymn (Tune: Old Hundredth) Eucharistic Prayer B Praise God from whom all blessings flow, Praise God, all creatures here below, Praise God above, ye heavenly host, Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen. 4 BCP-367 Sanctus (sung) Setting by Franz Schubert S-130 Acclamation Setting by McNeil Robinson II S-138 Amen Setting by McNeil Robinson II S-146 The Lord s Prayer Fraction Anthem BCP-364 Christ Our Passover Setting by David Hurd S-154 Agnus Dei Setting by Franz Schubert S-164 All Christians are Welcome to Receive Communion.

Please do not feel compelled to do so; but if you prefer to leave immediately after the candles are extinguished, please depart quietly so those who wish to do so may listen prayerfully to the Postlude. ANNOUNCEMENTS MUSIC IN TODAY S LITURGY: Today is the Second Sunday in Advent! At St. John s Church it is the practice that all the music in the liturgy is selected to reflect, amplify, or complement the themes of the appointed prayers and lessons for the day. During the Advent and Christmas seasons we will use Eucharistic Prayer B, because of its incarnational threads. We will also use liturgical music settings by Franz Schubert. The Choir will sing an Introit: two verses of an Advent Chorale by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750). The Choir will sing the appointed Canticle in an Anglican Chant setting by Edward John Hopkins (1818-1901), an English organist (Temple Church, London), composer and co-founder of the Royal College of Organists. The Offertory Anthem is a rather dark or should I say: exotic setting of Isaiah 40, in paraphrase, by Thomas Pavlechko (b.1962), an American composer of choral music and hymns, and organist (Calvary Episcopal Church, Memphis). The Organ Prelude is a brief setting for organ, based on our Processional Hymn tune, by Malcolm Archer (b.1952), an English organist (St. Paul s Cathedral, London), composer and conductor (Chapel of Winchester College). The Organ Postlude is a very early (c. 1705) Prelude and Fugue by Johann Sebastian Bach, sometimes called The Little, even if it isn t. Nothing more needs to be said enjoy! 5

A FESTIVAL OF NINE LESSONS & CAROLS is coming soon. The St. John s Choir, under the direction of Bill Clisham, with guest organist, Joanne Owen, will lead this magnificent service of readings, prayers, and music on the Fourth Sunday of Advent, December 23, at 10:30 AM. This is a beautiful but simple liturgy, with carols and anthems old and new, spanning our first need for redemption to the birth of Emmanuel, God-with-Us. You won t want to miss it. Please invite your friends to join you/us for this special time of worship. Food Pantry: The Food Pantry distribution day is now only on Tuesday from noon to 2:00 p.m. This decision was made after some careful research which noted that there are a number of other pantry sites within Salem City which cover all the days of the week with the exception of Tuesday. There are copies of the distribution sites on the hall counter in the Parish House. Please note that we continue to need volunteers and contributions. We served 45 people this week. The next volunteers are: 11/27 Rick and Bonnie, 12/4 Sue, 12/11 Laurie, 12/18 Open, 12/25 Holiday, 1/1 Holiday Thank you all for volunteering. December 18 is still open. Please volunteer if you are able. If you currently are not using offering envelopes and would like to have a box for 2019, please drop a note in the offering plate with your name and contact information or call the church office, 856-935-1798 on Tues thru Fri, 12:00 to 3:00.
