Series: Simply Jesus 12/16/18 Title: Jesus Promised Another Comforter Text: (John 14:15-31) We are still in the Upper Room Jesus instituted the Lord s Supper, our Passover meal Jesus has illustrated humility & Love (foot washing) Jesus has declared he is leaving. Jesus has declared that one of them will betray Him. Jesus has declared that Peter will deny Him. Talk about ruining the mood! Jesus has something life altering to teach them. I am going away, but will be with you always. I. Obedience is the Greatest Evidence of Love: 15 If ye love me, keep my commandments. Jesus utters a profound statement: To keep~ to observe. To obey. Obedience is a simple proof of our love for Christ. Based on this Criteria, do you love Jesus? Would others say, you love Jesus? 21 He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: Keeping/Obeying His commandments is the proof of one s love for Him. Kids this is what breaks mom & dad s hearts. Try that with the Police & the judge! Don t be like that, of course I love America I just don t want to do this or that. I am happy to Follow all the other laws. Partial Obedience is NOT Obedience. Its NOT that you DON T love Jesus, ITs that you love YOURSELF more! Based on this Criteria, do you love Jesus? Would others say, you love Jesus? Do you consider yourself a Loyal person? Loyalty~Fidelity to a prince/sovereign, husband/lover. Fidelity~Faithfulness; careful & exact observance of duty, or performance of obligations. Who we show obedience to is who we are loyal to. We expect fidelity in a public servants, in an agent or trustee, in a domestic servant, in a friend. Illus: Many of your children in some daycare/school. From these people who watch your children, you expect Fidelity, Loyalty, Honesty, Duty to task. Honesty; veracity; adherence to truth. Can God rely on your Loyalty? (vs 21) and he that loveth me (by obeying Him) shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.

YES! God, loves the entire world (Jn 3:16) BUT, God the reserves a special love for those who are obedient to His commands. God manifests Himself to those that are Obedient! Manifest~Plain, open, obvious to the understanding; apparent; not obscure, difficult to see or understand. (Rom 1:19) Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. 22 Judas saith unto him, not Iscariot, Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world? Because they do not Know Him! They are not saved! Lost people do Not have the Holy Spirit in them. Lost people so Not understand b/c they cannot See! (1 Cor 2:9-16) Read it out loud to them! BUT YOU ARE NOT LOST! God manifests Himself to you who are saved. God gives us Understanding, Discernment, & Illumination Do you have Spiritual Sight? Do you have Spiritual understanding? Are you HIS? Then these are yours to have. 23 Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him. Jesus alludes expanded ministry of the Holy Spirit. If we love Jesus, we will Obey Jesus commandments. Father & Son would make their abode with him. The abode of the Godhead is through the agency of the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. The believer in this age is the temple of the Indwelling Holy Ghost (I Cor 6:19). 24 He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father's which sent me. Sayings~ Primary term for God s Word in the NT. Emphasis is placed upon the very words of God with all that implies. Moreover, the Word which they heard Him speak was ultimately that of the Father. A lack of Love & Loyalty for God manifests as disobedience to His Word. To disobey God is to pick a fight with God. Have you ever picked a fight with someone?

We used to go into Lasalle and pick fights. Some we would win, some we would draw. We avoided some b/c we didn t think we could win. It is not In your best interest to pick a fight with God YOU WILL LOSE! - There literally is no future in it! The best security for the fidelity of men, is to make their interests coincide with their duty. It is in your best interest to Obey! It is in your best interest to be Loyal to God. The Entire list of God s promises belong to those who Obey and are Loyal to God. Based on your current level of Obedience, do you love Jesus? Can others tell you love Jesus? Can others See that God resides in Thee? Are you Loyal to God? Can others see your Loyalty? II. The Indwelling Holy Spirit: 16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; Vs 16 is not a direct Result of Vs 15. Vs 16 is the 2nd thing He is informing His disciples of Comforter~The Spirit of God Himself: Comforter, Advocate, Encourager, Counselor parakletos~ The One who comes along side & lifts up & hold up another person. an encouraging friend or an assisting helper Truths About the Comforter: (Vs 16) He will never leave us. (Vs 17) The World at large cannot recognize Him. (Vs 17) He lives WITH us and IN us. (Vs 26) He Teaches us. (16:8) He convinces of Sin/Righteousness/Judgement. (16:13) He guides us into Truth. He gives us insight into Future events. (16:14) He Glorifies Christ. (Acts 2) He is preexistent, He has influenced humans from with out, but now lives in us. 17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. God s Holy Spirit is here called the Spirit of truth. Stark contrast to the spirit of deceit (satan)(vs 30). His entire realm is characterized by lying and deceit. Revelation 7 times Satan is described as a deceiver. In contrast to the darkness of the realm of the evil one, God s Spirit is truth and is characterized by truth.

whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: The world cannot receive Him because it has no concept of Him & therefore does not know Him. Seeth~ has the sense of perceiving. The world is oblivious to the Holy Spirit of God and therefore ignores Him. Jesus reminded the disciples that they already knew Him, for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. The current as well as the coming ministry of the Holy Spirit is described by our Lord. He, at that time (prior to Pentecost), was with them. The word so translated (para para) has the sense of along side of, or beside. Accurately describe the ministry of the Holy Spirit for God s people prior to Pentecost. The day was soon coming when the Spirit of God would be in them. That of course was prophetic of the coming indwelling ministry of the Spirit. (I Cor 6:19) What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? 18 I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you. Comfortless~ orphanos from whence orphan derives As it implies, it has the sense of being bereft of parents or family. i.e. Abandoned Jesus knew He was soon depart, He promised His disciples to this day that He would not leave them spiritually orphaned. Through His Spirit, Jesus promised to come to them. 19 Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also. Jesus foretold that very soon (i.e., the next day) the world would see Him no more. However, His disciples would see Him. See~ sense of perceiving. Jesus told His disciples that they would perceive Him. And because He lives, they would also live. B/c of Jesus ongoing life, the disciples would live on. Veiled is a reference to His impending resurrection and the victory over death it would bring. 20 At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you.

That day is a clear reference to the resurrection. Thereafter, the disciples would come to understand that Jesus indeed was in the Father. Moreover, they (and us by extension) are in Him and He (Jesus) in us. Jesus touches upon how believers are now united with Him. There is total union. He is in us and we in Him. On top of all of that, He is in the Father, and the Father in Him. It is no wonder that neither height, nor depth nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 8:39) (John 10:38 and 17:23) 25 These things have I spoken unto you, being yet present with you. I am giving you the heads up b/c I have not been arrested yet. 26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. Jesus noted that what He had spoken to them was while He was still present with them. What He clearly was implying to them was that He was about to be taken from them. Jesus comments that the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name was about to take His place. A significant part of the Spirit s ministry will be to teach and to bring to remembrance that which Jesus had taught. The latter was accomplished in part in the later writing of the Gospels by several of the apostles. To this day, the Holy Spirit remains to teach us, particularly as we study the Word which He has inspired. He also brings to mind pertinent Scripture we have learned as the need arises in witnessing or preaching. This is how we are certain of the Accuracy of the Bible. The Holy Spirit controls Inspiration. III. The Promise of God s Peace: (Vs 27) Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

Jesus begins to wind down the after-supper discourse, near where it had begun, with the admonition to be not troubled. He promised to leave them His peace. His peace is like nothing the world can give. It settles to the depths of our heart. (Phil 4:7) And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. He begins the conclusion of His remarks with the injunction, Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. The Prince of Peace, was giving to them His peace. He knew what was ahead before the night would pass Virtually every NT epistle either begins & ends with an invocation of God s peace to the reader. The Result of the Holy Spirit s work in our lives is a Deep and Lasting Peace. Worldly peace is defined as the absence of Conflict. God s Peace is the Confident Assurance, regardless of the circumstances. Sin, fear, doubt, uncertainty and numerous other forces are at war with us. The Peace of God moves into our hearts and lives and restrain these hostile forces and offers comfort in place of conflict. If your life is in need of more peace, Allow God s Spirit to fill you with Christ s peace. (Phil 4:6-7) 28 Ye have heard how I said unto you, I go away, and come again unto you. If ye loved me, ye would rejoice, because I said, I go unto the Father: for my Father is greater than I. Evidently, some of the trouble perceived by Jesus in the hearts of the disciples was their concern of His impending departure. They did not fully understand it or grasp the significance of it all. Jesus gentle chided them by telling them they ought rather rejoice because He finally was going home to be with His Father who was greater than He. His departure was for His Glory. 29 And now I have told you before it come to pass, that, when it is come to pass, ye might believe. 30 Hereafter I will not talk much with you: for the prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me.

He then warned and foretold of what was nearing. He wanted to strengthen their faith before the events with Judas Iscariot took place later that evening. Jesus wanted them to understand that this was all foreknown to Him and fore-ordained by God. All of it was for His Glory. What would follow in the next twenty-four hours would place catastrophic stress on their faith. He tried, step by step, to foretell them ahead of time what was about to happen. As they reflected back on it later, they would realize it all was ordained of God. In so doing, He girded their faith which often was weak. The reference to the prince of this world (mentioned here one of three times by John), of course, is the devil. Satan could not hold Jesus. and hath nothing in me may well be a reference to how Satan would take Jesus that night, but he could not hold him in the grave. Within hours, the devil would waylay Jesus, but he could not hold Him. Even though Satan could not overthrow Jesus, in his arrogance, he still tried. 31 But that the world may know that I love the Father; and as the Father gave me commandment, even so I do. Arise, let us go hence. Jesus summarized His entire earthly presence of why He had come. He would obey His Father in the ultimate act of obedience on the cross. It would prove His love to God. It would be an indelible testimony to the world of His love for His heavenly Father. God had given Him a commandment to come and die on the cross. That time had come. Therefore, with holy resignation motivated by love for His heavenly Father, Jesus headed for the cross by way of Gethsemane. His comment, Arise, let us go hence, ended the last supper. They got up and began the journey to the Mount of Olives and the garden of Gethsemane. Jesus knew what awaited there.

Evidently, the powerful teaching of our Lord recorded in John 15-17 took place en route to Gethsemane as they slowly made their way to His rendezvous with destiny. The Fathers Commandments: To Worship the Father: (John 4:20-24) To Honor the Son: (John 5:22-23) To Love the Brethren: (Jn 3:16) (1 Jn 4:10) To Raise Up all that are saved: (John 6:37-41)
