ADIRONDACK NCRS CHAPTER OFFICERS LIEF LARSEN Chairman JIM WEIR Vice Chairman MIKE WILSON Treasurer TOM & ANNE FLOWERS Secretary BRIAN CANTELE Judging Chairman 217 1st Street Scotia, NY 12302 (518) 857-0627 llarsen@mmcmillwork.com www.adirondackncrs.com CHAIRMAN S NOTES - Lief Larsen First Quarter 2015 It is now the beginning of March, and old man winter has continued on it s relentless path through the northeast. Unfortunately winter forced us to cancel February s Membership Meeting due to bad weather hopefully that will be the only one to be canceled. On the bright side of things we have had plenty of time to work on our Corvettes since we could do little else. We are currently planning tech sessions for March and April so be on the lookout for those notices as well as the upcoming Membership meetings. On Saturday, March 7 th we will be having a Tech Session at John Dergosits house on C3 clutch / Transmission installation and C2 trailing arm rebuilding. A few topics we are looking at Big Block engine break-in, Fiberglass work along with many other topics in the pipeline. On the National front, I noticed that there is a new feature on the NCRS website..it s called the Technical Information Manual and Judging Guide Errata sheets. Instead of waiting for the manuals to be re issued every 4 or 5 years or more, the National Team leaders will be posting changes, updates, and corrections to the Judging Guides on the web site forum as they get approved. I can see this forum keeping the already comprehensive judging manuals as up to date as possible. Good idea in my opinion. Also, our year end reports have been submitted to National at the beginning of February as required and the Judging Meet Registration form has been submitted to the Drive Line for the next publication. It s time to start thinking about our upcoming judging meet in May and I m sure our Judging Chairman Brian Cantele will elaborate on this in his message. Please feel free to visit our Website as Bill Schroeder has been posting photos of the past Tech Session (thanks Bill great job) and our calendar of events is continually being updated (thanks to Mike Kalogridis) Finally, this is my first message as the Adirondack Chapter Chairman and I would like to thank John Dergosits for his many years serving as Chairman of the Chapter and Steve Wittek for his work as Activities Chairman. I believe I heard someone say John was Chairman for 12 years. Also thanks to Anne and Tom Flowers for their work on the newsletter. Next time you see them, please thank them for all that they did in their respective positions. Lief Larsen Page 1 of 10

JUDGING CHAIRMAN - Brian Cantele It sure has been a good winter for tech sessions and judging schools. This has been an epic winter. For those of us into winter sports, it has been welcomed. For those of you that attended one of the many get togethers, a plethora of restorations tasks were presented. If you missed out, many more are sure to come. The new 1956-1957 and 1961-1962 judging manuals have been sent to us, broken down into usable sections for judging and are in the chapter library. The superceded manuals are available free to members on a first come, first served basis. Before you know it, our own judging meet will be upon us. If you plan to have a car judged, please let me know asap. The next issue of the Restorer magazine will have an article from our own newsletter. A few years ago, the article grabbed the attention of the Restorer editor, Vinnie Peters. Vinnie asked for the ok to publish it and it finally made it to the top of his pile. It covers speedometer/odometer repairs. The author asked to be anonymous, but it did indeed come from our little corner of the NCRS world. Preparations for our meet will soon be under way. One of the many tasks I could use help with the give away bag for the judges. I have a few leftover things and some contact information. I also could use fresh ideas as to where to go begging. Along the same lines, we usually try to do something for the generous support of George (we use his body shop for our meet). That s all for now. See you on the road soon! MEMBERSHIP John Dergosits We currently have 28 members who have paid their Chapter dues for 2015. If you are receiving this newsletter and have not sent in your dues please send them to me as quickly as possible. Thank you! ACTIVITIES CHAIRMAN Michael Kalogridis We closed out 2014 with a tech session last December at Lief Larson's garage. Many hands participated in the removal of the trailing arms, rear main spring and differential from Lief's 1965 coupe. We started the new year off with a post holiday dinner party meeting at Scarborough's Restaurant. Many wife's joined in and a good time was had. A January tech session at Mike Wilson's garage was attended by a large contingent and guests. Brian Cantele led the disassembly of three Muncie transmissions and he gave a very informative explanation of how these gear boxes function. February's tech session was also held at Mike Wilson's garage; the topic was the replacement of the push rods and valve adjustment in Mike's 1969 coupe. We hope to have a busy schedule of tech sessions this year so if there are any projects to be done on your car let me know. Also, our monthly meetings are held the first Monday of each month at Scarborough's Restaurant in. Hope to see you there! Page 2 of 10

Tech Sessions On January 18 th we held a tech session at the Wilson Residence. The featured topic was Muncie 4-speed transmission, of which there were 3 on display. One was opened up for inspection only. A second was opened up and the gaskets replaced as there was an existing leak. The 3 rd was dismantled and completely rebuilt installing new bearings, synchronizers, new input shaft and new gaskets along with a new speedometer gear to compliment the lower gear ratio differential being installed in the car. Lots and lots of parts! Page 3 of 10

On February 8, 2015 the Adirondack Chapter NCRS held a tech session at Mike Wilson s barn to discuss and show the process of replacing push rods in a small block engine. Brian Cantele and Bill Meess demonstrated how to properly remove the rods, check for wear and how to replace them with proper adjustment and tightening for the valve lash. Proper gasket material and sealant were applied and the intake was back on in a matter of minutes. Brian showed us how the distributor could be reinstalled in any location oops I meant to say a detailed discussion ensued regarding the proper location of the distributor without the use of a timing light. A timing light will be used later after the water leak at the thermostat housing is repaired. This engine should be ready to roar again in the very near future. Steve Wittek gave a presentation on the process of restoring fiberglass to a 1964 roadster. He showed where new panels had been glued to new bonding strips, where cracks to old panels were repaired and how new wheel lips were formed and added to correct a previous repair. He also showed how carbo fill and icing are applied to smooth the surface for priming and painting. Earlier in the meeting John Dergosits lead a discussion on the need for the proper fly wheel in order to fit his clutch and to have the appropriate adjustments. We were fortunate to have a few engines hanging around to make comparisons. Page 4 of 10

On March 8 th a tech session was held at the Dergosits Residence. The topics of the day were C3 clutch/ transmission install and adjustment and C2 trailing arm rebuilding. Proper installation of clutch, pilot bearing and throw out bearing were discussed and demonstrated and then the big guys threw in the transmission with a whole less effort than is required with the C2 cars. There were also 3 sets of trailing arms there in various stages of restoration. Front bushings were installed in four units and 2 units were set up with bearings, shims and spacers for proper end play using the site customized set up tool provided by Brian Cantele. The 3 rd set was a set of aftermarket offset arms which will need rebuilding in the future. These allow for wider rear tires on C2 s and C3 s. Page 5 of 10
