Used School Subjects associated Learning process English, History Step 1: Warm-up and Motivation The teacher greets the class and asks How are you today? If there is not a problem, the teacher starts the lesson. She says Firstly we will review how we can read the years and dates. Then the teacher writes some years on the board such as 1881, 1923, 1938 and wants the students reads them one by one. Then, she writes three dates on the board such as 29 th October, 23 rd April, 10 th November and wants them to read these dates. She asks Yes class, Do you know the founder of Turkish Republic? she waits for the answer and says You re true, Ataturk was the great founder of Turkish Republic. She writes Ataturk on the center of the board and says what do you know about him? What comes to your mind about him? the teacher writes all the ideas said by the students on the board. Then she says All the things that you have said are true but today we will learn more things about him. Step 2: Stating the Instructional Objectives The teacher tells the students the topic of the lesson and she mentions about the aim of the lesson to the students Today, we are going to read a text about Ataturk. This is the text: Mustafa Kemal Atatürk was born in 1881 in Thessaloniki. His father Ali Rıza Efendi married his mother Zübeyde Hanım in 1871. He began his primary education at the local school but soon transferred to Şemsi Efendi School. In 1888, his father died and Mustafa Kemal moved to Rapla to live on his uncle s farm. A few years later, he returned to Salonika to complete his primary school education. In 1893, he enrolled in military Junior high school. He graduated from military college in 1902 with the rank of Lieutenant and continued his education at the Military Academy in 1905 as a Captain. Upon graduation, Mustafa Kemal began his distinguished career. In World War I he led Turkish troops in defending the Empire from British and French troops. Mustafa Kemal continued his military service for the Ottoman Empire until the end of World War I. In the year that followed, Mustafa Kemal emerged as a leader of the movement for Turkish Independence. On April 23, 1920 the Turkish Grand National Assembly met for the first time to plan fort he success of the Independence War. Mustafa Kemal was appointed speaker of the house and head of government. On October 29, 1923, the Turkish Great National Assembly officially made the decoration of the Republic and voted Mustafa Kemal as its first president. In 1934, the Turkish Grand Assembly granted Mustafa Kemal the surname Atatürk, meaning father of the Turks. Privately Atatürk led very modest life. He was a great lover of children. He spent a great deal of time outdoors riding his horse Sakarya and swimming. On November 10, 1938 near the end of his fourth turn of president of the Republic, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk died of liver disease. PRACTICE 3
