St. Ann s Parish 20th Sunday in Ordinary Time August 14, 2016 This Monday - August 15 th - is the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Normally this feast is observed as a Holyday of Obligation. Some years back, however, the US bishops received permission to remove the obligation to attend Mass when certain holydays fall on a Saturday or a Monday. The reason for this was to avoid the confusion over vigil Masses and Sunday evening Masses, namely, which obligation did they satisfy? So only Christmas and the Immaculate Conception on December 8 th, which is our patronal feast, retain the obligation on Saturdays and Mondays. When the Assumption falls on a Saturday or a Monday, such as this year, while the feast is still celebrated, the obligation to attend Mass under pain of sin is removed, so while we still encourage people to attend Mass on Monday, should you not do so, you do not need to go to confession before receiving Holy Communion again. While we will only have the two morning Masses on Monday, I am inviting you to come to a very special session of Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament on Monday to support a very urgent cause. You may be aware that there is a cult of Satan that has been celebrating Satanic Masses in Oklahoma City and elsewhere. They have been given permission to use the Oklahoma City Civic Center for their mass because the powers that be have decided it is protected by the First Amendment s Freedom of Religion. These satanic masses, however, cross the line. They don t merely worship Satan; rather, they insult God, especially the Blessed Mother. One of the elements they include is the consumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Before their service, they implant a pig s heart in a statue of Mary. During the service they decapitate the statue of the Blessed Mother and consume the pig s heart, thus providing the consumption of Mary that, according to their website, will lock the Blessed Mother into Hell. I read some of the blogs on the website of the leader of this group, and the vulgar and disgusting comments he made about Mary are far too obscene to even begin to discuss. And of course, this Satanic Mass will be held on August 15 th as we celebrate the Assumption of Mary. This is not freedom of worship; this is state-permitted religious hate speech, which the First Amendment does not protect. The timing of these services to always coincide with Catholic feasts of Mary is not a coincidence but a clear example of religious hate speech and cannot be tolerated. The Archbishop of Oklahoma City, Archbishop Coakley, has been vociferous and intrepid in fighting these masses. He has called upon all Catholics and all people of good will to pray for an end to these blasphemies against Our Lord and His Mother. On Monday, August 15 th, we will hold a special session of Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament from 9:00 AM until 8:00 PM in the chapel. There will be a special Holy Hour from 7:00-8:00 PM with recitation of the rosary, concluding with Benediction at 8:00 PM. I urge everyone to take some time out of your day on Monday and come and pray before the Lord Jesus in reparation for the terrible sacrilege that will take place at the Civic Center in Oklahoma City on Monday. As Jesus said, this type of demon you can only cast out by prayer and fasting. (Matthew 17:20-21) Women s Retreat Mt. Alvernia Retreat Center 158 Delavergne Ave. Wappingers Falls, NY 12590.
