Dazzling A Blessing for Transfiguration Sunday by Jan Richardson paintedprayerbook.com Believe me, I know how tempting it is to remain inside this blessing, to linger where everything is dazzling and clear. We could build walls around this blessing, put a roof over it. We could bring in a table, chairs, have the most amazing meals. We could make a home. We could stay. But this blessing is built for leaving. This blessing is made for coming down the mountain. This blessing wants to be in motion, to travel with you as you return to level ground. It will seem strange how quiet this blessing becomes when it returns to earth. It is not shy. It is not afraid. It simply knows how to bide its time, to watch and wait, to discern and pray until the moment comes when it will reveal everything it knows, when it will shine forth with all that it has seen, when it will dazzle with the unforgettable light you have carried all this way. Call to Worship Please STAND. Presider People God, as this new day dawns, may your Spirit guide us. May you be revealed in new ways as we come to worship you this day. We remain STANDING and sing together Opening Song Surely the Presence COLLECT FOR TODAY STANDING we affirm our intention to be here. Presider People Presider The Lord be with you. And also with you. God of majesty and might, give us the gift of faith. May we hear your voice for ourselves and through Christ stand on our own without fear. Amen. Transfiguration Sunday Page 3 February 26, 2017

WE TELL THE STORY All are now SEATED for the first Reading. First Reading Exodus 24:12-18 The Lord said to Moses, "Come up to me on the mountain, and wait there; and I will give you the tablets of stone, with the law and the commandment, which I have written for their instruction." So Moses set out with his assistant Joshua, and Moses went up into the mountain of God. To the elders he had said, "Wait here for us, until we come to you again; for Aaron and Hur are with you; whoever has a dispute may go to them." Then Moses went up on the mountain, and the cloud covered the mountain. The glory of the Lord settled on Mount Sinai, and the cloud covered it for six days; on the seventh day he called to Moses out of the cloud. Now the appearance of the glory of the Lord was like a devouring fire on the top of the mountain in the sight of the people of Israel. Moses entered the cloud, and went up on the mountain. Moses was on the mountain for forty days and forty nights. After the Reading, the Reader will say People The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Transfiguration Sunday Page 4 February 26, 2017

Psalm 2 We STAND and say the Psalm responsively. Why are the nations in an uproar? Why do the peoples mutter empty threats? Why do the kings of the earth rise up in revolt, and the princes plot together, against the Lord and against his Anointed? "Let us break their yoke," they say; "let us cast off their bonds from us." He whose throne is in heaven is laughing; the Lord has them in derision. Then he speaks to them in his wrath, and his rage fills them with terror. "I myself have set my king upon my holy hill of Zion." Let me announce the decree of the Lord: he said to me, "You are my Son; this day have I begotten you. Ask of me, and I will give you the nations for your inheritance and the ends of the earth for your possession. Transfiguration Sunday Page 5 February 26, 2017

All are now SEATED for the second Reading. Second Reading 2 Peter 1:16-21 We did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we had been eyewitnesses of his majesty. For he received honor and glory from God the Father when that voice was conveyed to him by the Majestic Glory, saying, "This is my Son, my Beloved, with whom I am well pleased." We ourselves heard this voice come from heaven, while we were with him on the holy mountain. So we have the prophetic message more fully confirmed. You will do well to be attentive to this as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts. First of all you must understand this, that no prophecy of scripture is a matter of one's own interpretation, because no prophecy ever came by human will, but men and women moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God. Reader People The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. The experience of mystery comes not from expecting it but through yielding all your programs, because your programs are based on fear and desire. Drop them and the radiance comes. Joseph Campbell from Thou Art That: Transforming Religious Metaphor Transfiguration Sunday Page 6 February 26, 2017

We STAND together and sing Gospel Song Hallelujah Chant by Ann Strickland The Presider then introduces the Gospel by saying Presider People The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. Glory to you, Lord Christ. The Gospel Matthew 17:1-9 Six days after Peter had acknowledged Jesus as the Christ, the Son of the Living God, Jesus took with him Peter and James and his brother John and led them up a high mountain, by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became dazzling white. Suddenly there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with him. Then Peter said to Jesus, "Lord, it is good for us to be here; if you wish, I will make three dwellings here, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah." While he was still speaking, suddenly a bright cloud overshadowed them, and from the cloud a voice said, "This is my Son, the Beloved; with him I am well pleased; listen to him!" When the disciples heard this, they fell to the ground and were overcome by fear. But Jesus came and touched them, saying, "Get up and do not be afraid." And when they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus himself alone. As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus ordered them, "Tell no one about the vision until after the Son of Man has been raised from the dead." After the Gospel the Presider will say Presider People The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ. Transfiguration Sunday Page 7 February 26, 2017

The Homily OUR RESPONSE TO THE STORY We STAND and say together these words. We believe in God above us, maker and sustainer of all life, of sun and moon, of water and earth, of male and female. We believe in God beside us, Jesus Christ, the Word made flesh, Born of a woman s womb, servant of the poor. He was tortured and nailed to a tree. Knowing full passion and deep sorrow, he died forsaken. He descended into the earth to the place of death. On the third day he rose from the tomb. He ascended into heaven to be everywhere present. And his Kingdom will one day be known. We believe in God within us, The Holy Spirit of pentecostal fire, Life-Giving breath of the Church, She is the Spirit of healing and forgiveness, Source of resurrection and life everlasting. Amen. The Peace We continue with this act of community - sharing of God s peace. Presider People The Peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. The Offertory Sentence You are invited to offer your gifts of money for the work of the church. God, the source of all good things, has given to us all that we need. In joyful response, we offer our gifts, the fruit of our labors. The story of the Transfiguration is not simply about learning to leave the mountaintop, or about releasing what we have grown attached to. It s not just about resisting our desire to turn moments of transcendence into monuments. The story of the Transfiguration is about opening our eyes to glory, allowing that glory to alter us, and becoming willing to walk where it leads us. The story urges us to trust that what we have seen, what we have known, will go with us. It assures us that the gifts received on the mountaintop will continue to illuminate us not only on level ground but even when we walk in the valley of the shadow. - Jan Richardson Transfiguration Sunday Page 10 February 26, 2017

As we finish exchanging God s peace with each other, we STAND as we sing together A Song to Offer For the Beauty of the Earth Transfiguration Sunday Page 11 February 26, 2017

THE CELEBRATION OF OUR SACRED MEAL Once the Table is set with the gifts of our hearts and hands we remember God s extraordinary gift of welcome and love, and we ask that once again the ordinary things of life bread, wine, ourselves would be vehicles of that welcome. All Presider All Presider All The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give God thanks and praise. We praise you and we bless you, holy and gracious God, source of life abundant. From before time you made ready the creation. Your Spirit moved over the deep and brought all things into being: sun, moon and stars; earth, wind and waters; and every living thing. You made us in your image, male and female, and taught us to walk in your ways. But we rebelled against you, and wandered far away. And yet, as a mother cares for her children, you would not forget us. Time and again you called us to live in the fullness of your love. And so this day we join with Saints and Angels in the chorus of praise that rings through eternity lifting our voices to you as we sing: (Repeat Vs 1) Abingdon Press, admin. by The Copyright Co. Glory and honor and praise to you, holy and living God. To deliver us from the power of sin and death and to reveal the riches of your grace, you looked with favor upon Mary, your willing servant, that she might conceive and bear a son, Jesus, the holy child of God. Living among us, Jesus loved us. He broke bread with outcasts and sinners, healed the sick and proclaimed good news to the poor. He yearned to draw all the world to himself yet we were heedless of his call to walk in love. Then, the time came for him to complete upon the cross the sacrifice of his life, and to be glorified by you. On the night before he died for us, Jesus was at table with his friends. He took bread, gave thanks to you, broke it, and gave it to them, and said: Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. As supper was ending, Jesus took the cup of wine. Again he gave thanks to you, gave it to them and said: Drink this, all of you: This is the cup of the new Covenant, which is poured out for you and for all for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me. Now, gathered at your table, O God of all creation, and remembering Christ, crucified and risen, who was and is and is to come, we offer you our gifts of bread and wine, and ourselves, a living sacrifice. Pour out your Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Body and Blood of Christ. Breathe your Spirit over the whole earth and make us your new creation, the Body of Christ given for the world you have made. In the fullness of time bring us, with all your saints from every tribe and language and people and nation, to feast at the banquet of the world. All this we ask through Jesus Christ. By him and with him and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty God, now and forever. Amen. Transfiguration Sunday Page 13 February 26, 2017

And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to pray, People and Presider Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. The Breaking of the Bread The Presider breaks the consecrated Bread and a period of silence is kept. The silence is broken with these words. Presider All Alleluia, Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us. Therefore let us keep the feast, Alleluia. Now we are invited to share the gifts of communion. The Presider extends that invitation by saying The Gifts of God for the People of God All are invited to receive the bread and the wine. Please know that at Grace Church this common meal is for all who feel moved to receive. This sacrament is God s gift to all, and is not tied to membership, doctrine or creed. Please assist the Chalice Bearers by tipping the cup from the base. Please tell your server if you prefer a wafer that is free from gluten, soy and dairy. Song after Communion You Are Quite the Beauty We stay SEATED and sing together. Words/Music by Anne Strickland You are light for the world. Matthew 5:14 You do not need to fetch it or make it. It is in you. The chaos out there roars, so dark, but sit still and listen: Let there be light speaks in your darkness. Let it be. Let it become you. Fill you. Ageless, it claims you. Calm, unworried by what it falls on, it radiates peace. Let it shine in you, a simple lamp by the window, before you bear it out into the world that needs it so badly. Steve Garnaas-Holmes Transfiguration Sunday Page 17 February 26, 2017

The Presider and People STAND and say together Our Common Prayer Eternal God, you have graciously accepted us as living members of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ, and you have fed us with spiritual food in the Sacrament of his Body and Blood. Send us now into the world in peace, and grant us the strength and courage to love and serve you with gladness and singleness of heart; through Christ our Lord. Amen. The Blessing The Presider offers this blessing followed by a hymn that deserves the brightest and best of our voices. May the love of God uphold you; the light of Christ guide you; and the Holy Spirit fill you with joy, now and forever. Amen.
