Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) Everyone over the age of 70½ years old must take a Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) from their IRA and 401K retirement accounts or face stiff penalties with the government. The RMD is considered taxable income and therefore impacts the tax rate that is applied to your Social Security benefits. The higher your RMD, the higher the rate that your Social Security is taxed. For parishioners who do not need some or all of their RMD, giving to a charity may reduce your 2018 tax obligation. If you receive your RMD and then send it to a charity yourself, it is still counted as taxable income. Having the amount withdrawn directly by your financial advisor and sent to the charity eliminates these amounts as income and lowers your total ordinary income level, which then reduces the rate the government can assess on your Social Security benefit. Contact your financial advisor or retirement plan administrator to determine how you can take advantage of this hidden benefit. Dear Queen of Peace Parishioners, Over the past 4 ½ years of study and discernment at Mount Angel Seminary, I have come to believe that God is asking me to step away from seminary formation and follow Him in a different path than priesthood. I have had an exceptionally good pastoral internship at St. Rose of Lima in Portland. My experience in seminary has been overwhelmingly positive, and the Lord "has done great things for me, and holy is His name" (Luke 1:49). Therefore, I am grateful that my decision to leave comes from having tasted and seen the real good that the priesthood is, and there is a real peace in that. I am excited to see how the Lord is leading me from where I am to where He wants me to be. Thank you so much for your prayers, love and support. Please be assured of my prayers for you, and please keep me in your prayers as I continue to listen to the Lord and follow Him. Please continue to support and encourage priestly and religious vocations! In Christ, Ethan Alano The Q of P Filipino Community invites you to celebrate Filipino Novena Mass (aka Simbang Gabi ) Simbáng Gabi (Filipino for "Night Mass") is a devotional 9-day series of Masses practiced by Roman Catholics in the Philippines in anticipation of Christmas and to honor the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Masses are held daily from Dec. 16 to 24 (in the Philippines) and from Dec. 15 to 23 (in the USA). On the last day of the Simbang Gabi, (Christmas Eve), the service is called Misa de Gallo (Spanish for "Rooster's Mass"). The Simbáng Gabi originated in the early days of Spanish rule over the Philippines as a practical compromise for farmers, who began work before sunrise to avoid the noonday heat out in the fields. Priests began to say Mass in the early mornings instead of the evening novenas more common in the rest of the Hispanic world. Join us on the last night on 12/23/2018 after Mass for Filipino food and entertainment.
