Please forgive me if I make note of the fact that my wife has put up with me for 53 years as of this date. We often congratulate folks who have reached a milestone like this. I suppose that s okay but I wonder if our congratulations are at least partially misplaced. The honor and glory should go to God since the love of God is more often the reason unions of men and women survive. It is not necessarily our love for God (although it should be) but rather God s love for us that helps these relationships survive. He not only gave his only son but he loves us enough to provide a wonderful partner and workmate for these many years. The Emmaus experience is a demonstration of God s love and marriage can also be a Means of Grace in our quest for a meaningful relationship with Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit and God. Okay, I ll get off my soap box about longevity in marriage (clearly not a blessing for everyone) and move on to things Emmaus. We are in the process of electing 5 new Board Members. A list of 9 people (4 men and 5 women) is included at the end of this newsletter. Each of these folks have agreed to have their names put forward and recognize that their election will mean a three year commitment to the GRACEmmaus Community. The GRACEmmaus Board is a working board with each Board member taking on a task to support the Community. If your name isn t on this list then it is your responsibility to make sure that you participate in the process by voting. This is not Chicago so we only recommend that you vote early, not often. Send your ballots to the GRACEmmaus P.O. Box or bring them to the Women s Candlelight or the Gathering in November. Ballots will be available at each of these occasions. Reminder: You still have time to get your Sponsor/Pilgrim material in for the Women s Walk Oct. 27-30. That s the good news. The rest of the story is that by this time all the slots may be taken and your pilgrim may have to be on a waiting list for Disciples Crossing. It isn t too early to begin to think about volunteering for service at one of the walks in the spring at Disciples Crossing, Athens, Texas. The easiest way is to go to the GRACEmmaus.org web site and fill out the on line form. Men s Walk March 15-18, 2012 will be led by John Norman. Women s Walk April 19-22, 2012 will be led by Kathy Kapka. As we think about service to the Emmaus Community and to Pilgrims, we know that, Anonymous Servanthood, has always been a critical part of the Emmaus Experience. And well it should be since that is what Jesus taught. It is fundamental to the Christian Faith. As usual, humans routinely muddy this up. It for that reason that I thought a reminder (as much for myself as anyone else) was in order. As Bob Brandt said, If we are truly serving God and the Pilgrims as we are called to serve, it shouldn t matter whether our servant-hood is recognized by Pilgrims, team or community. The only recognition that counts is that God recognizes our response to the call to servant-hood in whatever form it may come to us. DeColores Burton I. WOMEN S WALK #59 OCT 27, 2011 OCT 30, 2011 CAMP GILMONT All the beds will be occupied - Women s Walk #59 is full with a waiting list. GATHERING NEWS Next Gathering Saturday October 29 th, 2011 8:00PM Gilmer, Texas REUNION GROUPS Why are Reunion Groups important? Because they help us to extend our Emmaus experience and provide accountability in our journey with God. Reunion Groups are especially important at this time of year, when Walks are being conducted. Please take time to update your Reunion Groups, so we can help the new 4 th Dayers find their Reunion Group home. Just login to the GRACE Emmaus Website and click on the Reunion Group Update link. Please let me know if I can do anything to help. Chuck Reed chuck.reed@ymail.com Reunion Group Coordinator

Carol Derieux My name is Carol DeRieux, I attended Grace Walk 29, March of 2004 at camp Gilmont and sat at the table of Elizabeth. My family and I worship at First United Methodist Church in Gladewater. I would like to be on the board because I love the way God has put Emmaus together and you can see Him working all the time! Also, being involved in Emmaus keeps me focused on what I should be focused on in this life. My name is Elizabeth Deverell. I attended Walk #57 at Disciples Crossing in Athens. I sat at the table of Ruth. My husband of 30 years and I attend Lanes Chapel United Methodist Church in Tyler Elizabeth Deverell I so enjoyed my Walk to Emmaus with the Grace Emmaus Community. I plan to work wherever I can for the Grace Community. If elected I will work with all the board members to help further the growth of Grace Emmaus. I would love for this Lord's servant to be able to use the talents that God has given me to work and serve the Grace Community. Hello, my name is Karol Johnston, and I went on GRACE Emmaus Walk #49 at Disciples Crossing in Athens, Texas. I worship at Van United Methodist Church with my husband Mike. Karol Johnston I feel honored to be asked to serve as a board member for the GRACE community. My experience as a Pilgrim and worker in the Emmaus community as both an inside assistant table leader and table leader as well as an outside team member on three different walks have been wonderful and times of renewal. I am one who feels rewarded by giving of my time and talents that God has provided for me. I have always had a servant s heart and have pledged to be open to serve when I am asked. I would delight in serving this community as a board member.

My name is David McPherson. I attended GRACE Walk #3 at Timberline. I sat at the table of Luke. I attend Lanes Chapel UMC. David McPherson I want to be on the board so I can provide feedback to the Upperroom.org on what works and what doesn't work at our local walks so they may make better decisions on any future changes to the walk structure. As the most recent lay director, I want to stay active in the Emmaus movement and the best way I can do that is to serve on the board. Payne Springs UMC has a long tradition of supporting and working hard to serve the GRACE community, I would like to carry on this tradition. Mac Young Walk 56 was a life changing experience in my life and I would like to show my appreciation by serving and working to give this same experience to another Pilgrim. Working Walk 58 was almost as great an experience as my first Walk. I would be honored to serve on the board.
