Faith Formation Shining Stars Just as the star shines brightly at the top of many Christmas trees, so do our students at Faith Formation. In a continuation of recognizing our students as done in the November article, "Thankfulness," the following students are being honored in December. Alan Moser, ninth grade catechist, comments that Natalie Zawojski is a very knowledgeable student coming into the school year and is cheerful, attentive and willing to share her knowledge when asked. We have a cumulative scoring contest each semester based upon a student's ability to find scripture passages, answer questions asked during class discussions and scores on quizzes. Natalie was the top scorer. First graders, Madelyn Jarosh and Rebecca Sandoval are eager to learn their Catholic faith as witnessed by catechist, Melanie Johnson. Children truly add a sense of wonder and awe to our daily lives. Sam Sawyer: a role model, great listener, shares ideas, outstandingly kind, great manners and always does his daily prayers...a brightly shining star and eighth grade student in Mary Kate McCormack's class. Parents be proud of your children. I am sure this holds true for Doroteo and Guillermina Jauregui, parents of five children. Angel (grade 9) and Mateo (grade 8) are frequent altar servers at masses in Sister Bay. From my experience these two boys are very giving in answering requests asked of them. I recall Marisol (grade 4) took her First Holy Communion very seriously and am sure this spirit of piety is being passed on to Azucena (grade 2) who will be receiving the sacrament this year. Rubi Jauregui (grade 6) shares the message of Jesus with others...i have witnessed this as her catechist. Rubi is also an altar server. Doroteo and Guillermina know that they are the first teachers of their children's faith and their spirit -filled children are proof of this. ~Blessings, Linda Cummer, Faith Formation Coordinator Health & Wellness Living Healthy is a Prayer ON THE ROAD TO BETHLEHEM Here we are, just nine short days before we celebrate Jesus' birth -- each of us on our individual "Road to Bethlehem". We can't help but ponder what it was like for Mary and Joseph as they made the journey along that road. What can we learn from them as they journey? Shall we briefly join them on the road to Bethlehem? Depending on the route they traveled, the distance between Nazareth and Bethlehem is between eighty and one hundred miles. Walking that distance would have taken about a week, give or take a day or two. It was common for folks at that time to travel in caravans for both safety and companionship. It seems reasonable to assume that women in the caravan stood ready to assist Mary should her Baby be born as they traveled. We're told that the journey took place in early fall so the weather was probably uncomfortably warm. Mary, a simple peasant girl, had recently traveled a similar distance to visit her cousin Elizabeth, so she was probably fit for the journey (although advanced pregnancy undoubtedly negatively affected her comfort level). Joseph had a history both of being protective of Mary and faithful to his God, so she knew she could depend on him. The lack of housing at their destination must have disappointed and discouraged, but their God provided a simple shelter. The lesson for us may well be that these holy people had trust and faith sufficient to place themselves in the hands of their God. As I reflect on MY individual journey on the road to Bethlehem I might ask myself: Is my destination on this journey a place of deeper relationship with my God? Am I, like Mary and Joseph, able to put my life God's hands? Christmas Blessings from your Stella Maris Health & Wellness Committee

Starts at 10:00 am. Great Food, LOTS OF PRIZES. Open to ALL. Sponsored by the Northern Door Knights of Columbus. RESPECT LIFE- In 1531, when the indigenous peoples of Mexico were subjugated and the practice of human sacrifice was still a recent memory, the Mother of God appeared to St. Juan Diego as a pregnant native woman, now known as Our Lady of Guadalupe. She sent him with miraculous flowers in his cloak to tell the bishop to build a church where people could receive her Son and her loving, tender care. When St. Juan Diego opened his cloak before the bishop, an image of Our Lady was revealed that remains to this Parish Life & Upcoming Events Third Sunday of Advent December 16, 2018 3 day. The chapel was quickly built, millions embraced Christianity and the Church increased its protection of the indigenous peoples. END-OF YEAR CHURCH CONTRIBUTIONS-Church contributions for 2018 must be postmarked on or before December 31st to be credited to 2018. January postmarks no matter the date on the check will be credited to 2019. DID YOU KNOW "21.3 percent of pregnancies after week five of gestation end in miscarriage. Many others happen even earlier." Please read the inserted article from the October 26, 2018 Compass about the wonderful works the Elizabeth Ministry is performing for the dignity and sacredness of the miscarried child. OLD HYMNALS AVAILABLE! In case you d like to have a copy of our old hymnal to sing and pray the songs at home, we saved some that were in excellent condition. 5 Third Sunday of Advent-December 16, 2018 Worship and Music Column History of A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols Part 2 (Con t.) In these and other ways the service has become public property. From time to time the College receives copies of services held, for example, in the West Indies or the Far East and these show how widely the tradition has spread. The broadcasts, too, have become part of Christmas for many far from Cambridge. One correspondent writes that he heard the service in a tent on the foothills of Everest; another, in the desert. Many listen at home, busy about their own preparations for Christmas. Visitors from all over the world are heard to identify the Chapel as the place where the Carols are sung. Wherever the service is heard and however it is adapted, whether the music is provided by choir or congregation, the pattern and strength of the service, as Dean Milner-White pointed out, derive from the lessons and not the music. The main theme is the development of the loving purposes of God... seen through the windows and words of the Bible. Local interests appear, as they do here, in the bidding prayer, and personal circumstances give point to different parts of the service. Many of those who took part in the first service must have recalled those killed in the Great War when it came to the famous passage all those who rejoice with us but on another shore and in a greater light. The centre of the service is still found by those who go in heart and mind and who consent to follow where the story leads.
