Connections Newsletter of the Emily Wesleyan Church Connecting...to each other...to the community...to the Lord Letting Go November 2016 A Volume 11 Issue 1 In this issue. Positive Perspective page 2 Familyman page 2 Global Prayer-Net page 3 November Calendar page 4 This and That page 5 s fall is here among us and the leaves are continuing to fall I was reminded of that one oak tree in the back yard. You know the one. The one that sheds it branches all summer then when it comes time to shed its leaves just won t let go. I often wait and wait for the leaves to come down because, let s face it, no one wants to do a job twice, but they don t seem to fall. They just hang on the branches. No particular reason They have outlived their usefulness. They no longer take nutrients from the tree. They just hang there shriveled up and looking bleaker and bleaker as the days go by. Kind of reminds me of my own life. There are things that were once useful that no longer have any use. There are also other thoughts and attitudes about myself, others and God that are incorrect, old, useless Yet they seem to hang on to my life. Holding me back from what God truly wants to do in my life. We are reminded in Scripture that we are a new creation in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17). The old has gone and the new has come. Notice the old must go, the old leaves need to fall to the ground, in order for the new to come, the new leaves to come out. I am reminded continually that in order to live the life God has given for me to live I must throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us (Hebrews 12:1b). Let s not let the thoughts and patterns of our old life hang around. Let us ask God for the power of the Holy Spirit to renew our hearts and minds and whole lives for the glory of His Kingdom. Out with the old and in with the new. In Christ, Emily Wesleyan Church P.O. C o n n e c t i o n s P a g e 2 V o l u m e 1 1, I s s ue 1 Positive Perspective by Rev. Ron McClung Andy Andrews tells about a man ABC Carol and I recently spent a week on the Atlantic coast for some rest and relaxation. We flew into the Charleston, S.C., airport, arriving in the early evening and since our unit would not be ready until the following day, we spent the first night in a nearby motel. When we drove up to the front of the facility, we saw that the portico was missing. The columns, roof, and cupola were lying in a greenspace across the drive from the front door. Must be damage from Hurricane Matthew, we thought, as our arrival missed the hurricane by about a week. Once inside, we learned a different story. Workers who had come to the area to facilitate cleanup and repair following the storm had stayed at that motel. We noticed the big trucks and equipment parked around the property. The very morning before our arrival, a worker named Raymond had tried to drive his big bucket truck under the portico. Instead, he hit it and ripped it right off the front of the structure, trapping himself in the truck. He was rescued without injury, but I would love to see if the insurance report indicated the damage was done by Hurricane Raymond. Poor Raymond! Yet Matthew and Raymond are not the only hurricanes to affect people s lives. I have friends who are dealing with Hurricane Cancer. Others have grappled with Hurricane Divorce. Even Hurricane Joblessness threatens to obliterate some very capable people. Hurricane Death and Hurricane Sickness take their toll as well. None of us is immune from the devastating effects of the hurricanes that blow through our lives. The winds of adversity are no respecters of person. They come after all of us. Yet I remember that Jesus, asleep in a boat with his disciples when a storm arose, got up and rebuked the wind and the raging waters; the storm subsided, and all was calm (Luke 8:24). He makes all the difference to those who love and follow him. Storms come to everybody. Sometimes we wonder, How do people cope with the adversity that threatens to crush them beneath its pressure? The answer for so many of our friends is, The God who is greater than the storm strengthens and sustains them. I don t know what storm you are facing, but I do know Jesus can make a difference. Ron McClung is the former district superintendent of the Iowa- Minnesota district and current assistant general secretary of the Wesleyan Church in Fishers, Indiana. Dad s Corner Hey Dad, Sometimes you wonder if what you do matters and then God sends a nameless stranger to cheer you on. It happened the other day to me. I was wearing my #stayingmarriedt-shirt, as I do frequently. To be honest, I was wondering if it was effective as I hoped. Sure, I get the occasional thumbs up from a passerby, but still I was wondering. Then, a grayhaired stranger-mangot in my face. There was something about his passion that caught me by surprise. With his finger pointed within 18 inches of my face, he encouraged me to stand even if I didn t feel like it was making a difference. Keep wearing that shirt, he said, because people are looking at it. I don t know if he was an angel in disguise or just some husband or exhusband who knew marriage is under attack and in need of some champions for the cause, but his words were just what I needed to hear. I m guessing you might need to hear his words as well. Because people are looking at you, too my fellow husband/ dad whether you have a t-shirt or not. They ve got their eyes on you to see if marriage, family, and God really works like we ALL say it does. You may think your marriage has gone unnoticed but you re wrong. Feel the breath of that stranger s words and see the fire in his eyes as he pleads with you. Keep loving your wife and family because they re watching you. Thanks stranger I needed that. C o n n e c t i o n s P a g e 3 V o l u m e 1 1, I s s ue 1 GLOBAL PRAYER-NET Weekly Prayer and Praise Page of Global Partners October 25, 2016 MISSIONARY PRAYER FOCUS In coordination with Monday Missionary Spotlight on our Facebook page (facebook.com/globalpartnersonline), we are asking for focused prayer this week for Fred and Carol Cromer, missionaries to Uganda. Fred was called to missions while at Bartlesville Wesleyan College (now Oklahoma Wesleyan University). When Fred and Carol married, Carol accepted Fred s call to missions. After pastoring at Central Wesleyan Church in Kansas City, Missouri, for ten years, they left for Africa in 1991 with their four children. Fred and Carol have been working with Global Partners in theological education and literacy since 1991. They have served in Zambia and Swaziland; and currently, they ae working with The Wesleyan Church of Uganda. Fred teaches at the Wesleyan Bible Institute in Busia and is serving with the Ugandan leaders to develop The Wesleyan Church of Uganda. Carol is working with adult literacy through Literacy and Evangelism International, helping to train adults to read and write in their mother tongue. Prayer Points -Pray that The Wesleyan Churches of Uganda would begin to financially and physically support their pastors. Currently, very few churches are doing this. -Pray that the Church in Uganda would be able to create a Bible institute (Wesleyan Bible Institute) that will be sustainable. Pray that individuals and churches would help their pastors who get training with their transport and food. -Pray for Rev. Lucas Hamirie, the Bishop of The Wesleyan Church of Uganda. Pray for his health and for wisdom as he leads the Church. -Pray for Carol and her team as they work on the Lusamia primer that will help illiterate adults learn to read and write in their mother tongue. Pray that God would help them finish theprimer and help them as they prepare to train tutors. -Pray for wisdom for Fred and Carol as they work with the leaders to develop the national Church into a fully functional national Church.
