HELP NEEDED December 15th & 23rd! Weekly Message Vigil What praccally can we do during the season of waing and vigil keeping? What are some pracces that might incarnate for us the spirituality described here? How about the classically Catholic discipline of Eucharisc adoraon? To spend a halfhour or an hour in the presence of the Lord is not to accomplish or achieve very muchit is not really geng anywherebut it is a parcularly rich form of spiritual waing. As you keep vigil before the Blessed Sacrament, bring to Christ some problem or dilemma that you have been freng over, and then Say, Lord, I m waing for you to solve this, to show me the way out, the way forward. I ve been running, planning, worrying, but now I m going to let you work. Then, throughout Advent, watch aenvely for signs. A secondand more oeatsuggeson: Do a jigsaw puzzle. Find one of those big, complex puzzles with thousands of small pieces, one that requires lots of me and plenty of paence, and make of it an Advent project. As you assemble the puzzle think of each piece as some aspect of your life: a relaonship, a loss, a failure, a great joy, an adventure, a place where you lived, something you shouldn t have said, an act of generosity. So oen the events of our lives seem like the thousand pieces of a puzzle lying incoherently and disconnectedly before us. As you paently put the puzzle together meditate on the fact that God is slowly, paently, according to his own plan and purpose, ordering the seemingly unrelated and incongruous events of our lives into a picture of great beauty. Finally, take advantage of traffic jams and annoying linesreally anything that makes you wait. When you are forced to slow down, pray one of the great, repeve vigil prayers of the church, such as the rosary or the Jesus prayer ( Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner ). With this resoluon in mind, hang a rosary around your rearview mirror at the beginning of Advent. Consider the possibility that God wants you at that moment to wait and then sancfy the me through one of those savoring prayers. ~Fr. Dan Did you know? Our parish website has a link to Fr. Dan's past homilies. You can go back to listen to Fr. Dan's message again aer mass. This is the queson we have been pondering this year in our monthly Family Class. In an effort to get to know Jesus, we have been studying his Miracles and Parables. Each month we come together with our Faith Formaon families and start with a prayer. We then have a fun community building acvityone month it was doing a photo scavenger hunt, last month it was taking me to learn about family tradions. Aer we delve into the Miracle and Parable of the day, we have family directed acvies to help us apply the lesson to everyday modern life. Families work at their own pace, spending as much me as they want on each acvity. We close again with prayer before the families leave. The children absolutely treasure this me with their parents, and the parents also enjoy the opportunity to grow in their faith with their family. It is my belief that when you know Jesus, I mean REALLY know Him, you naturally Rise Up and want to follow Him! Being involved with this Faith Community has blessed my life in so many ways. It brings me great joy to work with families as their children grow in faith, and prepare for sacraments. Amy Golden Director of Child and Family Ministry Our Catholic faith We have a series of sessions on Sunday mornings for people who wish to become Catholic (RCIA). WHAT IS YOUR CATHOLIC IQ? Hanukkah (Chanukah) is celebrated with a nightly menorah lighng, special prayers and food. The event celebrates the rededicaon (Chanukah) of the Holy Temple aer the Greeks had entered the Sanctuary and defiled the holy oil. When the Israelites entered the Temple they found one cruse of oil that had not been defiled. It should have been sufficient for one day but miraculously, the oil lasted for how many days? a) 12 b) 10 c) 8 d) 6 WHY DO WE DO THAT? CATHOLIC TRADITION EXPLAINED Queson: On many Sundays, especially during Advent and Lent, we hear a reading from one of the prophets. What is significant about them for us? Didn't Jesus fulfill all their predicons? Answer: Lent and Advent are the mes of the church year when the prophec word forms an important part of the liturgical season. Isaiah, Jeremiah, Baruch, and Zephaniah are just some of the prophets who offer powerful and essenal lessons for Chrisans of any era. Prophets do not predict the future. They are very much concerned about the present, calling Israel to follow once again the word of God. The prophets witness to a life of faith. In the midst of an intense relaonship with God, the prophets are very aware of their unworthiness to embrace this call from God and struggle to accept the mission God entrusts to them. The prophets speak on behalf of God. Each tesfies that the word spoken is not from them but from God. At mes, this lands them in trouble with their audience. Jeremiah, for example, felt betrayed by God as the prophec message was delivered. People did not like the message because of their sinfilled lives, and their displeasure was taken out on the prophet. While tempted at mes to "throw in the towel," the prophets remained true to the life of faith and persevered in the proclamaon of God's word. In modeling these virtues and calling us to greater fidelity, the prophets offer an example and message that are sll important to us today. We are called to help prepare the way of the Lord by making the real meaning of Christmas come alive in our own hearts, in our family and to reach out to those in need. Sharing the Gospel For the Kids Have you ever played a game where you asked for a "doover" so you could try again? Prayer Dear God, when I find myself doing or saying things that you would not like, help me to stop and start over. God desires to lead us with His mercy and jusce. These are essenals in God's kingdom and some of the gis Christ's future coming will bring. But our world's systems do not place emphasis on these values. Wanng greater profits, downsizing companies in order to reduce expenses, using others for personal or corporate gain, and valuing instuons over people are just a few of the "values" we encounter every day. We are called to straighten the path to Christ. In a world that places value on things that are counter to our call, how do we respond? We need to learn to discern what is of real value and then take the risk of bringing it into the marketplace.. Pray for all military personnel and their families. May God keep them safe in his hands.
