ASCENSION LUTHERAN CHURCH THE LUTHERAN CHURCH MISSOURI SYNOD LITTLETON, COLORADO February 11, 2018 8:00 am TRANSFIGURATION OF OUR LORD The Glory of the Lord AS WE GATHER This day ends the Epiphany season and prepares us for Lent. Jesus has been revealing His true nature through His words and actions, and on the Mount of Transfiguration three disciples see His glory revealed as transfiguring light. Moses and Elijah appear with Him, talking about His departure in Jerusalem. But our Lord then commands the disciples not to tell about the event until after Easter. Because we live after His resurrection, Paul writes in the Epistle, we recognize Jesus true glory in going to the cross for us, for God has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ (2 Corinthians 4:6).

PREPARATION PRELUDES I Want to Walk as A Child of the Light Paul Manz and O Wondrous Type! O Vision Fair Dunstable GREETING TOLLING OF THE BELL Congregation, please stand during the tolling of the bell OPENING HYMN O Wondrous Type! O Vision Fair LSB 413 Notes on our Opening Hymn Text: What does Type mean? This hymn text does not simply recount a biblical story (today s Gospel lesson) but personalizes it as we pray, verse 5, to see Thy glory face to face, acknowledging that the fear, wonder, and awe experienced by the disciples is not simply an historical occurrence. It can/should also be our response when we encounter Christ through Word and Sacrament. Through these means Christ appears to us in ways seemingly less tangible, less spectacular that is true, BUT HE IS NO LESS REAL, NO LESS PRESENT! Through Word and Sacrament we today encounter a type of His glorious presence, first experienced in awesome form by three of his disciples on the Mount of Transfiguration. MJZ INVOCATION In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION 1 John 1:8 9 If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Let us then confess our sins to God our Father. Most merciful God, we confess that we often forget Your gracious presence and guiding. We are by nature sinful and unclean and, relying on ourselves, have sinned against You in thought, word, and

deed. By action and inaction, thoughtless words, and failure to profess the faith within us, we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves, nor fully trusted You as our King. For Jesus sake, forgive us, open our eyes to Your presence with us each day and especially as we gather to receive His body and blood, and lead us to walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen. Almighty God in His mercy sent His Son, who revealed the true nature of His glory by dying for us and rising to give us new life. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. WORD KYRIE In peace, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy. For the peace from above and for our salvation, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy. For the peace of the whole world, for the well-being of the Church of God, and for the unity of all, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy. For this holy house and for all who offer here their worship and praise let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy. Help, save, comfort, and defend us, gracious Lord. Amen. HYMN OF PRAISE Lord, This Day We ve Come to Worship LSB 911 (Verses 1-2, 5) SALUTATION The Lord be with you. And also with you. PRAYER OF THE DAY Let us pray. O God, in the glorious transfiguration of Your beloved Son You confirmed the mysteries of the faith by the testimony of Moses and Elijah.

Mercifully enable us to see by faith His presence with us now in, with, and under the bread and wine of the Lord s Supper, as we join the hosts of heaven in praising Your holy name; through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. Old Testament: Exodus 34:29-35 (Moses face shines after being in God s presence.) When Moses came down from Mount Sinai with the two tablets of the Testimony in his hands, he was not aware that his face was radiant because he had spoken with the Lord. When Aaron and all the Israelites saw Moses, his face was radiant, and they were afraid to come near him. But Moses called to them; so Aaron and all the leaders of the community came back to him, and he spoke to them. Afterward all the Israelites came near him, and he gave them all the commands the Lord had given him on Mount Sinai. When Moses finished speaking to them, he put a veil over his face. But whenever he entered the Lord s presence to speak with him, he removed the veil until he came out. And when he came out and told the Israelites what he had been commanded, they saw that his face was radiant. Then Moses would put the veil back over his face until he went in to speak with the Lord. Lector: This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Epistle: 2 Corinthians 3:12-4:6 ( We need not fear being near God as Israel did at Mount Sinai.) Therefore, since we have such a hope, we are very bold. We are not like Moses, who would put a veil over his face to keep the Israelites from gazing at it while the radiance was fading away. But their minds were made dull, for to this day the same veil remains when the old covenant is read. It has not been removed, because only in Christ is it taken away. Even to this day when Moses is read, a veil covers their hearts. But whenever anyone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord's glory, are being transformed into his likeness with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit. Therefore, since through God's mercy we have this ministry, we do not lose heart. Rather, we have renounced secret and shameful ways; we do not use deception, nor do we distort the word of God. On the contrary, by setting forth the truth plainly we commend ourselves to every man's conscience in the sight of God. And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to

those who are perishing. The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. For we do not preach ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, and ourselves as your servants for Jesus' sake. For God, who said, "Let light shine out of darkness," made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ. Lector: This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Congregation, please stand. Gospel: Mark 9:2-9 (Jesus is transfigured in the presence of three disciples.) The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the ninth chapter. Glory to You, O Lord. After six days Jesus took Peter, James and John with him and led them up a high mountain, where they were all alone. There he was transfigured before them. His clothes became dazzling white, whiter than anyone in the world could bleach them. And there appeared before them Elijah and Moses, who were talking with Jesus. Peter said to Jesus, "Rabbi, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters--one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah." (He did not know what to say, they were so frightened.) Then a cloud appeared and enveloped them, and a voice came from the cloud: "This is my Son, whom I love. Listen to him!" Suddenly, when they looked around, they no longer saw anyone with them except Jesus. As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus gave them orders not to tell anyone what they had seen until the Son of Man had risen from the dead. This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to You, O Christ. HYMN OF THE DAY I Want to Walk as A Child of the Light LSB 411 SERMON Beyond Comprehension Pastor Larson TEXT: Mark 9:2-9 NICENE CREED Found in the back cover of your hymnal

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH Let us pray for the Church, the world, and all people in their various needs. We give thanks, heavenly Father, that You sent Your Son to be our Savior. Bless all who proclaim His true glory in going to the cross as the atonement for our sins. Grant that His light may shine through us here in our congregation, wherever people of faith gather around Word and Sacrament, and through Your servants everywhere in their public and private lives. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer. Loving Lord, hear the spoken and silent prayers of those unknown to us the lonely and forgotten in society, those in broken homes, and all who need nurture, justice, and dignity. Answer them according to Your gracious will. Likewise, we pray for those near and dear to us, [especially...]. Use us to surround them with Your love, that they may know Your presence to heal and comfort. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer. Heavenly Father, use the Word we have heard and the Sacrament we shall receive to strengthen the faith the Spirit has graciously placed within us. Grant us to celebrate the feast, even as we place all these petitions before You, knowing that Your answers are better than our prayers. Receive them all for the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. PAX DOMINI Psalm 117:1 2a Praise the Lord, all nations! Extol Him, all peoples! For great is His steadfast love toward us, and the faithfulness of the Lord endures forever. Let us share His steadfast love and the peace that it produces. The peace of the Lord be with you always. And also with you. We greet one another with a word of reconciliation, such as Peace be with you.

PROPER PREFACE SANCTUS It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who at His transfiguration revealed His glory to His disciples and now in this Sacrament reveals His allencompassing love that we may look forward to the glory of life everlasting. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying: c. 2017 Concordia Publishing House.
