WELCOME ANNOUNCEMENTS PRELUDE Christ, Whose Glory Fills The Skies arr. Cindy Berry The assembly stands (if able) BRIEF ORDER FOR CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS P: In the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen P: Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you and worthily magnify your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. C: Amen P: If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. But if we confess our sins, God who is faithful and just will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Silence is kept for reflection and self-examination. P: Most merciful God, C: we confess that we are in bondage to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen P: Almighty God, in his mercy, has given his Son to die for us and, for his sake, forgives us all our sins. As a called and ordained minister of the Church of Christ, and by his authority, I therefore declare to you the entire forgiveness of all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen 3

ENTRANCE HYMN 4

APOSTOLIC GREETING P: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. C: And also with you. HYMN OF PRAISE 5

SALUTATION P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. PRAYER OF THE DAY P: Let us pray. O God, at the glorious transfiguration of your only Son, you confirmed the mystery of our faith by the witness of the disciples and by your own voice from the cloud. Mercifully complete our adoption as your children, and give us, with our King, an inheritance of his glory. Grant this, we pray, through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen The assembly is seated. CHILDREN S SERMON Children who wish to go to the nursery, may do so following this sermon. The First Reading is from the 34 th chapter of Exodus. First Reading: Exodus 34:29-35 29 When Moses came down from Mount Sinai, with the two tablets of the testimony in his hand as he came down from the mountain, Moses did not know that the skin of his face shone because he had been talking with God. 30 Aaron and all the people of Israel saw Moses, and behold, the skin of his face shone, and they were afraid to come near him. 31 But Moses called to them, and Aaron and all the leaders of the congregation returned to him, and Moses talked with them. 32 Afterward all the people of Israel came near, and he commanded them all that the Lord had spoken with him in Mount Sinai. 33 And when Moses had finished speaking with them, he put a veil over his face. 34 Whenever Moses went in before the Lord to speak with him, he would remove the veil, until he came out. And when he came out and told the people of Israel what he was commanded, 35 the people of Israel would see the face of Moses, that the skin of Moses face was shining. And Moses would put the veil over his face again, until he went in to speak with him. This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. 6

Brief silence for reflection The Psalm is sung responsively. Psalm 50:1-6 1 The Lord, the God of / gods, has spoken;* he has called the earth from the rising of the sun / to its setting. 2 Out of Zion, perfect / in its beauty,* God reveals him- / self in glory. 3 Our God will come and will / not keep silence;* before him there is a consuming flame, and round about him a / raging storm. 4 He calls the heavens and the earth / from above* to witness the judgment / of his people. 5 Gather before me my / loyal followers,* those who have made a covenant with me and sealed / it with sacrifice. 6 Let the heavens declare the rightness / of his cause;* for God him- / self is judge. Brief silence for reflection The Second Reading is from the 3 rd and 4 th chapters of 2 Corinthians. Second Reading: 2 Corinthians 3:12-13, 4:1-6 12 Since we have such a hope, we are very bold, 13 not like Moses, who would put a veil over his face so that the Israelites might not gaze at the outcome of what was being brought to an end. 1 Therefore, having this ministry by the mercy of God, we do not lose heart. 2 But we have renounced disgraceful, underhanded ways. We refuse to practice cunning or to tamper with God s word, but by the open statement of the truth we would commend ourselves to everyone s conscience in the sight of God. 3 And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing. 4 In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. 5 For what we proclaim is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, with ourselves as your servants for Jesus sake. 6 For God, who said, Let light shine out of 7

darkness, has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Brief silence for reflection GOSPEL ACCLAMATION The assembly stands (if able) to welcome the Gospel. P: The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark the 9th chapter. Gospel: Mark 9:2-9 2 After six days Jesus took with him Peter and James and John, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, 3 and his clothes became radiant, intensely white, as no one on earth could bleach them. 4 And there appeared to them Elijah with Moses, and they were talking with Jesus. 5 And Peter said to Jesus, Rabbi, it is good that we are here. Let us make three tents, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah. 6 For he did not know what to say, for they were terrified. 7 And a cloud overshadowed them, and a voice came out of the cloud, This is my beloved Son; listen to him. 8 And suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone with them but Jesus only. 9 And as they were coming down the mountain, he charged them to tell no one what they had seen, until the Son of Man had risen from the dead. This is the Gospel of the Lord. 8

The assembly is seated. SERMON Silence for reflection follows the sermon. The assembly stands (if able). 9

HYMN OF THE DAY All rights reserved. Reprinted under OneLicense.net license A-720190. 10

NICENE CREED C: We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven; by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen PRAYERS OF THE CHURCH P: Let us pray for the whole people of God in Christ Jesus, and for all people according to their needs. A brief silence. Each portion of the prayers ends with these or similar words: P: Lord, in your mercy, C: hear our prayer. The prayers conclude: P: Into your hands, O Lord, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in your mercy; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. C: Amen 11

SHARING OF THE PEACE P: The peace of the Lord be with you always. C: And also with you. The people greet one another with a sign of Christ s peace, and may say, Peace be with you, or similar words. The assembly is seated. OFFERING After the offering is gathered, the assembly stands (if able). OFFERTORY 12

OFFERTORY PRAYER A: Let us pray. Merciful Father, C: we offer with joy and thanksgiving what you have first given us our selves, our time, and our possessions, signs of your gracious love. Receive them for the sake of him who offered himself for us, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen PREFACE 13

P: It is indeed right and salutary.... join their unending hymn: SANCTUS EUCHARISTIC PRAYER P: Blessed are You, Lord of heaven and earth. In mercy for our fallen world you gave your only Son, that all those who believe in him should not perish, but have eternal life. We give thanks to you for the salvation you have prepared for us through Jesus Christ. Send now your Holy Spirit into our hearts, that we may receive our Lord with a living faith as he comes to us in his holy supper. C: Amen. Come Lord Jesus. P: In the night in which he was betrayed our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. 14

Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. LORD S PRAYER P: Lord, remember us in Your kingdom and teach us to pray: C: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. The assembly is seated. AGNUS DEI John 1:29 15

INVITATION TO COMMUNION All are welcome to receive the Lord's Body and Blood who are baptized in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit and believe that Jesus Christ is truly present in the bread and wine. HOW WE COMMUNE: When you come forward the pastor will first give you bread to eat. Then, take a cup from the tray. The assistant will pour in wine to drink. Afterward, you will place the empty cup in the tray at the side aisle, and return to your seat. If you are unable to consume wine, you may commune with only the bread. Unbaptized and those who have yet to receive first communion may come forward to receive a blessing. Signify by holding your hands to your chest instead of reaching out for the bread and wine. COMMUNION HYMNS 16

The assembly stands (if able) when everyone has received the sacrament. BLESSING P: The body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ strengthen you and keep you in his grace. C: Amen 17

POST COMMUNION CANTICLE POST COMMUNION PRAYER A: Let us pray. Almighty God, you gave your Son both as a sacrifice for sin and a model of the godly life. Enable us to receive him always with thanksgiving, and to conform our lives to his; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord. C: Amen BENEDICTION P: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look upon you with favor and give you peace. In the name of the Father, + and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen 18

CARE-BAGS FOR THE HOMELESS As part of our ongoing outreach the Social Ministry Committee is looking to sponsor Care-Bags for the Homeless. As we enter the Lenten Season, this outreach can be a great way for you to extend your Lenten Practices. At the moment the committee is looking for Monetary Donations. With the money gathered the Committee will purchase items needed for the homeless and enlist your help on a future Sunday between the Service and Sunday School, to stuff bags. The bags will be then made available to the congregation. How It Works: You carry these bags in your vehicle and should you come across a person in need you simply give them a bag. When you run out of bags simply ask after church and we can resupply you. This is not a new idea and is in practice by others, it is however new to our congregation. It s a wonderful way to show God s Love to those in need. CORE VALUES OF THE NALC Christ-Centered We confess the apostolic faith in Jesus Christ according to the Holy Scriptures. We affirm the authority of the Scriptures as the authoritative source and norm, according to which all doctrines should and must be judged (Formula of Concord). We accept the ecumenical creeds and the Lutheran Confessions as true witnesses to the Word of God. Mission-Driven We believe that the mission of the Church is to preach the Gospel and to make disciples for Christ. We believe that making disciples in our congregations, in our communities and nations, and around the world must be a priority of the Church in the present age. Traditionally-Grounded We affirm the ecumenical creeds and the faithful witness of the Church across time and space. We endorse the form and practices of the universal Church that are consistent with Scripture, particularly the office of the ministry and the tradition of worship under Word and Sacrament. We seek dialogue and fellowship with other Lutheran churches and with faithful Christians of other confessions. Congregationally-Focused We strive to be a church body that is organized to facilitate the ministries of local congregations in a posture of servanthood and a spirit of partnership, through the provision of resources, connections and information. 2299 Palmer Drive, Suite 220 New Brighton, MN 55112-2202 Phone: 651-633-6004 Toll-free: 888-551-7254 Website address: www.thenalc.org 25

Building Blocks of Being and Growing as a Disciple Since we have such a hope, we are very bold, not like Moses, who would put a veil over his face so the Israelites might not gaze at the outcome of what was being brought to an end. 2 Corinthians 3:12-13 We learn from our first reading today (Exodus 34) that when Moses came down from Mount Sinai, after speaking with God, that his face shone reflecting the glory of God. He would place a Growing as a Disciple veil over his face until he spoke to God again so that the Israelites would not know the transient nature of this reflection. Paul says that we can be bold because with Jesus the glory of God never fades away. It is said to us at our baptisms, Let your light so shine before others that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven. Jesus gives us His light when we are baptized into his death and resurrection. Thoughts to Ponder: When Moses first came down from Mt. Sinai, he was not aware that his face shone. Are you aware that your light is shining for others to see? Is there some reason that it may not be shining? Source: Lutheran Study Bible NOTES FROM WORSHIP, SUNDAY SCHOOL OR BUILDING BLOCKS ABOVE 26
