St. Rose of Lima Church Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time August 7, 2016 With great excitement we boarded the long flight to Kraków via Frankfurt late Sunday evening, July 24 th. As we arrived Monday we joined 186 nations from all over the world. Alex had already arrived from Greece and met us at the airport. Deacon Michal was at the hotel to greet us. We began our time with a Mass of Thanksgiving in a conference room provided for us by our hotel. We had our first delicious polish meal and all went to bed exhausted but ecstatic. On Tuesday morning we got up refreshed and ready to go. We began with the celebration of Holy Mass at the Cathedral of St Mary. Our group was amazed to have a Mass in a cathedral almost 900 years old!! We then had a delicious polish breakfast and fortified, took a walking tour of the old city. In the afternoon our guide Tomaz with our driver Bartoz took us to Wadowice, the salt mines way down in the bowels of the earth. We saw how men with the help of horses, mined salt for hundreds of years. We prayed in a huge chapel there and marveled at the altar, president s chair, and statues all built out of salt!! The day ended with dinner and we went to bed amazed and grateful for such an opportunity! Wednesday morning we drove to the town of Waldowice, the home where Pope John Paul lived. We visited the small but comfortable three room apartment where the family lived. The holy pictures, dishes, and furniture reflect faith, food, and home. In the afternoon I celebrated Mass at the Shrine of Mary of the Assumption at Kalwaria. After which I hosted a small dinner for Fr. Matt Twiggs, Deacon Michael, Alex and Seminarian Kris from Passaic studying for our diocese. After wonderful conversation, great polish food, and a little libation, we all retired for the night. Thursday morning we enjoyed a selection of eggs, kielbasa, salads, cold meats, juices, coffee, tea and wonderful bread. Later in the morning Fr. Matt and I concelebrated Mass at the Magnificat Cathedral of St. Stanislaw. Afterwards we walked to a local field where we waited to hear the Holy Fathers welcome address. With great enthusiasm we cheered our Holy Father with 187 nations united in mind and heart. Many languages - one heart. On Friday we drove thirty-five minutes to the Divine Mercy Sanctuary and prayed in the old chapel and kissed the relics. Afterwards, we walked five minutes to the Pope John Paul Center and I concelebrated Mass with two French bishops, a French priest, and Fr. Matt Twiggs. We truly opened our hearts to the Lord s mercy. The bus took us to the outskirts of Kraków where we got our space on the field by 4:30pm and waited in prayer, song, and conversation for the arrival of the Holy Father to lead us in the Stations of the Cross. The prayer experience was profound and by 8:00pm we made our way to the city center for a Polish-Italian dinner and then went to bed. I was privileged to celebrate Mass Saturday in an old medieval church, the Church of St. Frances Kraków. We followed in the tradition of pilgrims for more than 800 years as we prayed together and received Holy Communion. We entrust our future to the Lord and pray that the youth of America will boldly hand on the traditions of our faith for future generations to live as we live in the love and strength of Jesus. After Mass we took a bus approx fifteen miles to near the papal park. Upon exiting the bus we joined thousands of other pilgrims as we walked three miles to our little piece of field. There we set up camp to wait the eighteen hour vigil in preparation for the Holy Mass celebrated by our Holy Father. On Saturday evening we had a beautiful Holy Hour of Eucharistic Adoration. Our Holy Father encouraged us to stand up for our faith, not to be comfortable but to strive to support the hungry, the refugees, and the alienated. As the holy hour ended we were all given a candle to light and the whole area, in excess of a million people, was filled with light. Then a concert brought this amazing evening to a close. Then we all lay on our sleeping blankets to get refreshed for another amazing day tomorrow. I awoke Sunday morning in my sleeping bag and watched the amazing sunrise - pink and fluffy gray clouds floated in the sky. A beautiful sun began to warm our day and dry up the condensation from the dew. By 6:15am Deacon Michal and I waved to our group as we began the walk with many lines and delays which would bring us to the reserved section for Deacons and concelebrating priests. At last, I alone with more than 1000 priests stood in line to go thru security and enter the space just below the sanctuary area. Sunday Mass was amazing! The beautiful international music, prayers, and the Holy Father challenges us to be Christ-like and proactive in leading others in faith. I believe there were over two million people present, the majority of which were between 16 and 28 years old. There was an atmosphere of joy, respect, and great kindness among all. It took two hours after Mass to walk to the tram station and one hour back to the hotel. I returned with joy and a sense of awe! Sunday night we all had a farewell dinner. We were tired but full of the Holy Spirit. Most of us were in bed by 9:00pm. On Monday morning, 6:00am, we waved off our group for their long flight to JFK via Frankfurt. Deacon Michal returned to his family and will return to East Hanover on August 10 th. Some of us are staying on to tour Central Europe and I look forward to seeing all of you next weekend. A big thank you to Stephanie who did an amazing job of organizing this pilgrimage, to Deacon Michal who reserved the gorgeous shrines, churches, basilicas and cathedrals where we celebrated Mass. To Alex who took charge of our youth and ensured we were in the right place at the right time. And to you our beloved parishioners for your support, love, and prayers. In the coming weeks I will write more about the pilgrimage and our trip afterwards. I will talk about the Holy Father s talks and homilies and see how we can best digest them. With prayerful best wishes, prayers, and love from Stephanie, Alex, and Deacon Michal. Father Owen

Owen s Jubilee Invitations Invitations to Fr. Owen s Jubilee Mass and luncheon are open to everyone in the parish family of St. Rose of Lima and beyond. The only method of mailing invitations however, was to registered parishioners, as that is the only people we have addresses for. Also, we provided those addresses to a professional stationer, but mistakes still happen and even registered parishioners had some typographical errors and/or omissions. Please know that everyone is invited, but we will eventually reach a maximum of how many can attend due to the capacity of the Park Savoy. If you did not receive an invitation, simply stop in to the parish office or call to have one mailed to you. If we reach capacity for the luncheon on December 11th, remember that the following weekend of December 17/18, everyone will have the opportunity to celebrate Fr. Owen s jubilee at a reception after each Mass that weekend. God bless Father Owen and our parish family of St. Rose of Lima in his 25th jubilee year of priesthood.
