What Have I Done? Jer. 8:1-13 Jer. 8:1-13, At that time, saith the LORD, they shall bring out the bones of the kings of Judah, and the bones of his princes, and the bones of the priests, and the bones of the prophets, and the bones of the inhabitants of Jerusalem, out of their graves: And they shall spread them before the sun, and the moon, and all the host of heaven, whom they have loved, and whom they have served, and after whom they have walked, and whom they have sought, and whom they have worshipped: they shall not be gathered, nor be buried; they shall be for dung upon the face of the earth. And death shall be chosen rather than life by all the residue of them that remain of this evil family, which remain in all the places whither I have driven them, saith the LORD of hosts. Moreover thou shalt say unto them, Thus saith the LORD; Shall they fall, and not arise? shall he turn away, and not return? Why then is this people of Jerusalem slidden back by a perpetual backsliding? they hold fast deceit, they refuse to return. I hearkened and heard, but they spake not aright: no man repented him of his wickedness, saying, What have I done? every one turned to his course, as the horse rusheth into the battle. Yea, the stork in the heaven knoweth her appointed times; and the turtle and the crane and the swallow observe the time of their coming; but my people know not the judgment of the LORD. How do ye say, We are wise, and the law of the LORD is with us? Lo, certainly in vain made he it; the pen of the scribes is in vain. The wise men are ashamed, they are dismayed and taken: lo, they have rejected the word of the LORD; and what wisdom is in them? Therefore will I give their wives unto others, and their fields to them that shall inherit them: for every one from the least even unto the greatest is given to covetousness, from the prophet even unto the priest every one dealeth falsely. For they have healed the hurt of the daughter of my people slightly, saying, Peace, peace; when there is no peace. Were they ashamed when they had committed abomination? nay, they were not at all ashamed, neither could they blush: therefore shall they fall among them that fall: in the time of their visitation they shall be cast down, saith the LORD. I will surely consume them, saith the LORD: there shall be no grapes on the vine, nor figs on the fig tree, and the leaf shall fade; and the things that I have given them shall pass away from them. A student was called into the principal s office. Upon his arrival, he asked, What have I done? This is an oft repeated question. Policemen are asked it many times during a week. What Have I Done? 3

In the Old Testament God s people were not concerned with what they had done wrong. Jer. 8:6, I hearkened and heard, but they spake not aright: no man repented him of his wickedness, saying, What have I done? every one turned to his course, as the horse rusheth into the battle. They were in the depths of sin. Jer. 8:5, Why then is this people of Jerusalem slidden back by a perpetual backsliding? they hold fast deceit, they refuse to return. I want to ask some questions about different areas, and then ask yourself, What have I done? You have sinned. What have you done spiritually? 1 John 1:8-10, If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us. Rom. 3:10, As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: Rom. 3:23, For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; 1 John 3:4, Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law. You have separated yourself from God. Eph. 2:1-3, And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins; Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience: Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others. Isa. 59:1-2, Behold, the LORD S hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear: But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear. What Have I Done? 4

You have obeyed the gospel or rejected it. It is God s power. Rom. 1:16, For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. It must be obeyed. Heb. 5:8-9, Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered; And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him; John 14:15, If ye love me, keep my commandments. There is no middle ground. What have you done with Jesus Christ? Do you love Him? Is He your leader, friend, mediator? Is He your Saviour? Matt. 1:21, And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins. Have you obeyed Him? Heb. 5:9, And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him; What have you done with the Bible? What some have done: Rejected it. Left it on the shelf. A little girl was once asked, Do you know your Bible? Oh, yes sir! Could you tell me something that is in it? I could tell you everything that is in it. Oh, my! Do tell me then. My sister s boyfriend s picture is in it; and mom s family recipe is in it; and a lock of my hair when I was a baby is in it. What Have I Done? 5

Made light of it. A bird can go 9 days without food. A man 12 days. A dog 20 days. A turtle 500 days. But food is necessary for all creatures. There are some bird Christians who go more than 9 days without spiritual food. There are some dog Christians who go more than 20 days without spiritual food. And there are some turtle Christians who go more than 500 days without spiritual food. What kind of Christian are you? Misunderstood it. What we should do with it. Study it. 2 Tim. 2:15, Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. Respect it. Matt. 4:4, But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. Put it in our hearts. Psalms 119:97-104, O how I love thy law! it is my meditation all the day. Thou through thy commandments hast made me wiser than mine enemies: for they are ever with me. I have more understanding than all my teachers: for thy testimonies are my meditation. I understand more than the ancients, because I keep thy precepts. I have refrained my feet from every evil way, that I might keep thy word. I have not departed from thy judgments: for thou hast taught me. How sweet are thy words unto my taste! yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth! Through thy precepts I get understanding: therefore I hate every false way. Defend it. Jude 1:3, Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you What Have I Done? 6

that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints. Obey it. Heb. 5:9, And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him; What have you done with tour talents? Matt. 25:14-30, For the kingdom of heaven is as a man travelling into a far country, who called his own servants, and delivered unto them his goods. And unto one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one; to every man according to his several ability; and straightway took his journey. Then he that had received the five talents went and traded with the same, and made them other five talents. And likewise he that had received two, he also gained other two. But he that had received one went and digged in the earth, and hid his lord s money. After a long time the lord of those servants cometh, and reckoneth with them. And so he that had received five talents came and brought other five talents, saying, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me five talents: behold, I have gained beside them five talents more. His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord. He also that had received two talents came and said, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me two talents: behold, I have gained two other talents beside them. His lord said unto him, Well done, good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord. Then he which had received the one talent came and said, Lord, I knew thee that thou art an hard man, reaping where thou hast not sown, and gathering where thou hast not strawed: And I was afraid, and went and hid thy talent in the earth: lo, there thou hast that is thine. His lord answered and said unto him, Thou wicked and slothful servant, thou knewest that I reap where I sowed not, and gather where I have not strawed: Thou oughtest therefore to have put my money to the exchangers, and then at my coming I should have received mine own with usury. Take therefore the talent from him, and give it unto him which hath ten talents. For unto every one that hath shall be given, and he shall have abundance: but from him that hath not shall be taken away even that which he hath. And cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. What Have I Done? 7

What have you done with your opportunities? We face them each day. Teach others about Jesus. Mark 16:15, And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. Teach our relatives, classmates, friends, fellow-workers, neighbors, etc. We all have opportunities. To some, they may never come again. What have you done? Conclusion This is a great, important question. There is an even greater one. What are you going to do from this moment on? Are you a Christian? The following are the steps necessary to become one: Faith. Heb. 11:6, But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. When I was in high school (I was about 17 years old), a neighbor boy my same age told me he was an atheist. Since I had been baptized, I took the opportunity to talk to him about the scriptures. He told me that he could see that living the life of a Christian was good, but he wasn t sure if he believed there was a God. But to be on the safe side, maybe he should go to church, and when he dies and stands before God (if there is a God) on the day of Judgment (if there is a Judgment), maybe if God sees that he has gone to church and lived a good life that God would send him to heaven (if there is a heaven), and not to hell (if there is a hell). I told him, It doesn t work that way. You have to believe in Him with all your heart or you cannot please Him. Repentance. Acts 2:38, Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. Acts 11:18, Then hath God also to the Gentiles granted repentance unto life. If while you were sleeping, you heard a noise in the other room, and you think to yourself, There s a burglar in my house! So you reach for your cell phone, and as quietly as you What Have I Done? 8

can, you call the police, tell them there is a burglar in your house, and you give them your address. Soon, you heard them arrive and capture the thief. He yells, I m sorry; I m sorry! What is he sorry for? He is sorry that he got caught; not that he stole. In true repentance the thief would be sorry that he ever stole and wants to change his life so that he would never steal again. That is true repentance. It is a change of mind that brings about a change of action. That is what we have to do before we can become a Christian. Confession. Rom. 10:9-10, That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. What do we confess? That we believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. Note that in the above scriptures that faith (believing), repentance, and confession are UNTO righteousness, life, or salvation. Unto means toward something; not that one has already attained. Baptism. It is baptism where righteousness, life, and salvation are attained. Jesus, himself, was baptized to fulfill all righteousness, But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me? And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him. And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. (Matt. 3:14-17). Jesus was baptized because God said it was the right thing to do. Did you see how pleased God was about Jesus being baptized? Jesus also said it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. We are baptized because it fulfills His righteousness, not because it is of our righteousness. In fact, if we are not baptized, we are still in our sins. Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. (Acts 2:38). Peter, what did you say the reason of baptism is? for the remission of sins. Why would anyone want to leave out the step that removes our sins? What Have I Done? 9

Jesus commanded that to reach salvation we must be baptized. And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. (Mark 16:15-16). Ananias told Saul (before he was rename Paul) the very same thing, And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord. (Acts 22:16). Baptism is a requirement given by God. Baptism is called a burial. Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. (Rom. 6:4). Our old man is to be dead to us. Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection: Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. (Rom. 6:3-6). Baptism is God s blueprint for applying the blood of Christ in our lives by baptism. We are free from our old sins only when we are baptized. This doesn t mean sprinkling. The scripture above says baptism is a burial. We don t take a dead body to the cemetery and sprinkle a little dirt over it; we bury the body. If you have not yet become a Christian, won't you consider it today? What Have I Done? 10
